We report in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) reflection-absorption studies of curing chemistry of polyimide thin films on Crand Cu surfaces, and of the thermal stability of the resulting thin film interfaces when exposed to air at elevated temperatures. The polyimide investigated is based on 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)bis(phthalicanhydride)-4,4'-bis(4-aminophenoxy)-biphenyl. The imidization process takes place at temperatures higher than 90°C anda small amount of anhydride is generated during curing. This by-product is converted to imide at temperatures above 250°C. Complete imidization is achieved after curing at 300°C on Cr substrates, while evidence for incomplete curing on Cu is observed under the same conditions. Thermal stability studies with Cr and Cu substrates show that thermal decomposition of thin (∼1000Å) polyimide filmsoccurs on Cu when the film is exposed to air at 200°C, while the polyimide is stable on Cr.

The analysis and evaluation of the speed performance of personal computers for various classes of applications continues to be an important area of research. One such class of applications is that of embedded applications. Embedded applications such as VOIP, streaming video and image processing software etc. are used significantly in the personal computer domain. In this paper, we analyze the execution characteristics of a subset of widely used embedded applications on a general personal computer based on the Intel Pentium 4 microprocessor. It was observed that, for most of the applications chosen here, the combination of lower trace cache hit rates and lower L1 cache load hit rates may have a more adverse impact on the performance of this machine when compared to other parameters such as L2 cache load hit rates, branch prediction rates, etc. The overall L2 cache load hit rates, branch prediction rates and TLB hit rates were found to be fairly high. Hardware improvements over the trace cache and L1 cache structures of the chosen machine could help improve performance for many of these applications.

This paper presents an analysis of simultaneous temperature and electrical parameters measurements in a three phase induction motor (TIM). The electrical parameters, namely voltage and current in the motor windings, were measured with Hall effect sensors and the temperature in the stator slots were monitored using fiber Bragg grating sensors (FBG). In the performed temperature analysis, two sets of sensors were used, containing four FBG in each fiber. Eight FBG sensors were uniformly distributed in the TIM stator. A special encapsulation of the sensor was elaborated to minimize mechanical disturbances in the fiber due to motor operation. Tests were performed with motor running at no load and with intentional voltage disturbances in the windings produced at every 15 minutes periods. It was observed that the temperature distribution is not uniform in the TIM stator either with or without a balanced voltage in the windings. A mean level increase of 0.5°C in temperature was registered in all of the sensors when there is a lack of balance in the voltage windings.

A new multiuser scheduling scheme is proposed and analyzed in this paper. The proposed system combines features of conventional full-feedback selection-based diversity systems and reduced-feedback switch-based diversity systems. The new hybrid system provides flexibility in trading-off the channel information feedback overhead with the prospected multiuser diversity gains. The users are clustered into groups, and the users' groups are ordered into a sequence. Per-group feedback thresholds are used and optimized to maximize the system overall achievable rate. The proposed hybrid system applies switched diversity criterion to choose one of the groups, and a selection criterion to decide the user to be scheduled from the chosen group. Numerical results demonstrate that the system capacity increases as the number of users per group increases, but at the cost of more required feedback messages.
