Accurate segmentation of cell nuclei in microscope images of tissue sections is a key step in a number of biological and clinical applications. Often such applications require analysis of large image datasets for which manual segmentation becomes subjective and time consuming. Hence automation of the segmentation steps using fast, robust and accurate image analysis and pattern classification techniques is necessary for high throughput processing of such datasets. We describe a supervised learning framework, based on artificial neural networks (ANNs), to identify well-segmented nuclei in tissue sections from a multistage watershed segmentation algorithm. The successful automation was demonstrated by screening over 1400 well segmented nuclei from 9 datasets of human breast tissue section images and comparing the results to a previously used stacked classifier based analysis framework.

The Ray Tracing rendering algorithm can produce high-fidelity images of 3-D scenes, including shadow effects, as well as reflections and transparencies. This is currently done at a processing speed of at most 30 frames per second. Therefore, actual implementations of the algorithm are not yet suitable for interactive real-time rendering, which is required in games and virtual reality based applications. Fortunately, the algorithm allows for massive parallelization of its computations. In this paper, we present a parallel architecture for ray tracing based on a uniform spatial subdivision of the scene and exploiting an embedded computation of ray-triangle intersections. This approach allows for a significant acceleration of intersection computations, as well as, a reduction of the total number of the required intersections checks. Furthermore, it allows for these checks to be performed in parallel and in advance for each ray. In this paper we discuss and analyze an ASIP-based implementation using FPGAs and a GPGPU-based parallel implementation of the proposed architecture. The performance of both implementations are reported and compared.

Effective exploitation of the application-specific parallel patterns and computation operations through their direct implementation in hardware is the base for construction of high-quality application-specific (re-)configurable application specific instruction set processors (ASIPs) and hardware accelerators for modern highly-demanding applications. Although it receives a lot of attention from the researchers and practitioners, a very important problem of hardware reuse in ASIP and accelerator synthesis is clearly underestimated and does not get enough attention in the published research. This paper is an effect of an industry and academic collaborative research. It analyses the problem of hardware sharing, shows its high practical relevance, as well as a big influence of hardware sharing on the major circuit and system parameters, and its importance for the multi-objective optimization and tradeoff exploitation. It also demonstrates that the state-of-the-art synthesis tools do not sufficiently address this problem and gives several guidelines related to enhancement of the hardware reuse.

In this study a data acquisition card has been designed and implemented to observe and analysis of the voltages and the currents of an alternator under resistive, capacitive and inductive loads. Detail analysis of power, power factor, phase angles and harmonics of the alternator has been done using software written in LabVIEW. The measurement system of voltage and current is opened to remote access. Users can access to the system from any computer having internet connection and make the instantaneous measurements. The experimental results show that the data obtained from power analyzer are very close to remote monitored one. Therefore the system developed can be a useful tool for engineering education purposes as an online course material, a simulator and an online control experiment.

We propose a novel optimization-based paradigm for designing enhanced classifiers. The proposed paradigm allows us to incorporate available prior process knowledge into classifier design, thereby improving the performance of the resulting classifiers. In this work, we focus on dynamical systems that can be represented as finite-state multi-dimensional stochastic processes that possess labeled steady-state distributions. Given prior operational knowledge of the process, our goal is to build a classifier that can accurately label future observations obtained from the steady-state, by utilizing both the available prior knowledge and the training data. Simulation results show that the proposed paradigm yields improved classifiers that outperform traditional classifiers that use only training data.

The effort of "Smart Grid" is to modernize grid infrastructure and build-in intelligence to power grids and delivery systems, and their interfaces to customer premises. However, the perspectives range from an emphasis on infrastructure to an emphasis on new paradigm-shifting applications. Alternatively, the smart grid can be thought of as the advanced information technologies that enable the desired analytical applications. As a general understanding, we believe that Smart Grid needs to integrate power system analysis, computing and economics to enhance grid reliability, efficiency, and security, and contributes to the climate change strategic goal. In this Supersession, the analytics that empowers smart grid applications is discussed;and the practical implementation and integration challenges will be presented.

This paper will chronicle the implementation of the offer of support for students to do applied research in the area of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) by the area electrical power company into a working program in which both undergraduate and graduate students have participated. The local electrical power distribution and transmission company, CenterPoint Energy, developed an interest in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). They contacted the administration of the College of technology at the University of Houston to ask if there was an interest in student research projects in PHEVs, and the problems associated with implementing an infrastructure to serve them. The electrical Power engineeringtechnologyprogram faculty was very interested in the power company proposal since this would be an opportunity for students to learn by working on real world problems. CenterPoint Energy would provide a stipend for the undergraduate students taking special problems courses in PHEV topics, which would be under the guidance of one of the authors, an electrical Power engineeringtechnology faculty member. In addition the CenterPoint Energy would provide the PHEV to study, the necessary data gathering equipment, and advertise the involvement of the College of technology and CenterPoint in the project. The CenterPoint Representative wanted the product from undergraduate student projects to be a presentation by the students on their research projects to a group of employees of the Power Company. The graduate research activity is being supported by funding a graduate research assistant position for one of the authors who is involved in smart-grid research. The expected outcome of the graduate research component is a contribution of the student to the research results that will be disseminated in technical conferences and journal papers. The undergraduate project activity began fall semester 2008 with two students studying the cost of operation of the company hybrid an
