An experiment was performed for the observation of H emission induced in a cooled laser-induced atmospheric pressure gas plasma of He atoms in their metastable excited state. The strong H emission detected clearly established, to the exclusion of other well known major excitation processes, the exclusive contribution of the He-induced excitation (HIE) mechanism. The process is suggested to take place by means of energy transfer from the excited He atoms to the H atoms via Penning collision induced ionization involving electron exchange. The result further shows that this mechanism may also work for elements other than H and thereby strongly suggests the use of ambient He gas to broaden and complement the applications of standard laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

In this paper, we investigate the average symbol error probability (SEP) of fixed decode-and-forward relay networks over independent but not identically distributed Nakagami-m fading channels. We have derived closed form expression of SEP for general rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) under relay selection scheme where only the best relay forwards message from the source to the destination. The expressions are in terms of hypergeometric series which can be efficiently numerically evaluated. The numerical results are validated with Monte-Carlo simulations. ©2010 IEEE.

The effort of "Smart Grid" is to modernize grid infrastructure and build-in intelligence to power grids and delivery systems, and their interfaces to customer premises. However, the perspectives range from an emphasis on infrastructure to an emphasis on new paradigm-shifting applications. Alternatively, the smart grid can be thought of as the advanced information technologies that enable the desired analytical applications. As a general understanding, we believe that Smart Grid needs to integrate power system analysis, computing and economics to enhance grid reliability, efficiency, and security, and contributes to the climate change strategic goal. In this Supersession, the analytics that empowers smart grid applications is discussed;and the practical implementation and integration challenges will be presented.

The paper employed some independently developed sensors based on the Octopus X platform to build a Zigbee-based Sensor Networks. Also, we implemented a Location-aware living environment by deploying the developed Zigee-based sensor. Besides, through the created window console interface, the sensed data can be transmitted and transformed to the database for further utilized. Moreover, by the devised Web interface, the update request data can be observed efficiently and responded effectively to any situations. © 2010 IEEE.

Medium-voltage DC electrical distribution is envisioned as a possible system for the warship of the future, bringing numerous advantages including a very power-dense architecture. This system takes the AC power produced by generators, immediately rectifies all power to DC and distributes it throughout the ship, requiring inversion back to AC for all AC loads. The question then arises whether it makes sense instead to route two parallel buses: an AC bus for all 60 Hz. AC loads and a DC bus to service all other loads. We model these two theoretical distribution systems in a notional destroyer using a preliminary design tool under development in our laboratory and find that the two-bus system is more efficient and lighter.

There are many university initiatives that focus on technology-based solutions to address the needs of marginalized communities. The technology-based solutions are intended to be economically and socially sustainable. These endeavors are usually well-meaning, creatively designed, and enthusiastically deployed, but do not achieve the sustainable impact envisioned at the outset of the projects. To addresses these shortcomings, at The Pennsylvania State University we are applying three key tenets of systems thinking to our humanitarian engineering and social entrepreneurial ventures: 1) employing regulation via feedback to ensure that the system is actually working;2) defining systems by their interactions and their parts;and 3) understanding that systems exhibit multi-finality. The concept of multi-finality refers to (designing) a system where the individual actors (inputs), the subsystems, and their interactions, all meet their own goals while the system as a whole also meets its goals. In this paper, we lay the framework for the application of specific systems thinking concepts to increase the probability of success of global development ventures. We provide simple yet compelling examples from two different ventures to illustrate the power of systems thinking to train innovative problem-solvers and increase the probability of success of technology-based social entrepreneurial ventures in Africa. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

This study is part of a larger research project, supported by a National Science Foundation Research on Gender in Science and engineering program grant, designed to determine the effect of self-efficacy and other factors on the retention of women in undergraduate engineering programs. These data represent the first wave of the study completed in the 2008-2009 academic year of sophomores in the colleges of engineering from four participating universities: Northeastern University, Rochester Institute of technology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Wyoming. The study examines the effect of gender on a range of contextual supports to explain three dimensions of self-efficacy: work, career, and academic within undergraduate engineering. Contextual support is defined as the institutional support provided to students through a number of mechanisms, such as financial aid, mentorship, and participation in living/learning communities. The analyses revealed some significant differences by gender. With the exception of academic self-efficacy, which is significantly higher among males, every other significant difference favors the female population. As freshmen, women are not as confident as men in their likelihood of achieving success in their engineering major. However, they were found to have higher career self-efficacy, in contrast to what has been reported in the literature, and benefit far more from mentorship. They also exceed the scores of their male counterparts in five support dimensions: they report receiving more support from professional clubs and associations;they are more involved in campus life;they take more advantage of living/learning communities;and they report that they not only receive more support from their friends but that their friends really matter to them. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

In this paper, a large scale Medium Voltage DC all-electric ship integrated power system is modeled from the prime mover (gas turbine) to the propulsion load. This system has a three-phase 21MW synchronous machine as a main generator and a three-phase 19MW induction motor as a main propulsion drive. The influence of propeller emergence on both electrical and mechanical components of the system is investigated.

Drinking water can be contaminated by microorganisms which can be re-grown in case of not controlling chlorine concentration well in water treatment plant (hereafter WTP). It can be harmful to public health. Most WTPs have used chlorine as disinfectant. It can be used in pre-chlorination, post-chlorination and re-chlorination. In postchlorination, it is injected after filtration to keep residual chlorine from being contaminated by microorganisms. Postchlorine process without re-chlorination is directly serviced to citizens. If the concentration is low, drinking water can be contaminated by bacterial re-growth. On the other hand, the high chlorine can lead to customer complaints about taste and odor. Therefore, it is necessary to predict chlorine decay in clear well to maintain desired chlorine levels. In this paper, it is shown that artificial neuro-fuzzy inference system could be used to model chlorine decay in the process and control residual chlorine better than present controller, in which cascade control is considered to compensate the error in the output. © 2010 ISAROB.
