A collision occurs when more than two tags present in the reader's field of a radio frequency identification system. Anti-collision algorithms such as binary trees and dynamic framed slotted aloha (DFSA) have been employed to prevent such a collision. The identification number of tag consists of 64 bits and certain parts of 64 bits can be considered a priori-information. This paper proposes a new anti-collision algorithm based on a-priori information about the manufacturer code. This prior-information reduces the number of bits to analyze in the algorithm, hence reduces the operation time for the faster read-performance. Results indicate that the proposed anti-collision algorithm required a less number of used time slots, thus minimizing the operation time more than 50% comparing to the existing ones.

An RFID system consists of an RFID reader, a server connected to a database, and RFID tags attached to the objects needed to be identified. We are interested in the case where two tags are needed to be simultaneously scanned in a readerpsilas field, for which many protocols have been proposed in literature. They however are all insecure for the special case, where an adversary, acting as a reader, can penetrate the server and access data stored in the server. In this paper, we propose a protocol to remedy this problem for two-tag environment. In addition, it can be extended to more-than-two-tag environment without much increasing total amount of time to scan all the tags.

We compare the characteristics and performance of joint (single-step) and sequential (two-step) approaches for creating sparse and structured acoustic signal representations derived using overcomplete methods (OMs). A joint approach, such as molecular matching pursuit (MMP), attempts to find coherent structures in a signal as part of the decomposition process, while a sequential approach, such as agglomerative clustering (AC), attempts to find coherent structures after the signal decomposition. We review each approach, and examine their performance using real audio and music signals.

This paper investigates a simple analytical approach that yields the optimal switching thresholds for multi-branch switched diversity systems. It also presents a performance optimization based on these optimal thresholds. For multi-branch switched diversity systems, the optimal fixed switching threshold is not only a function of the average channel SNR but also a function of the number of diversity branches. Conventional multi-branch switched diversity systems use a single fixed switching threshold, where computing this optimal threshold is not a simple task when the number of diversity branches is high. We propose a novel multi-branch switched diversity system that is based on a set of adaptive switching thresholds instead of a single fixed switching threshold, where a different switching threshold is used every switching. Thanks to the fact that each switching threshold in the set depends only on the remaining diversity branches, the proposed system allows a simple optimization for these switching thresholds. Furthermore, numerical and simulation results show that the proposed adaptive switched diversity system outperforms the conventional system.

The identification of reliable peripheral biomarkers for clinical diagnosis, patient prognosis, and biological functional studies would allow for access to biological information currently available only through invasive methods. Traditional approaches have so far considered aspects of tissues and biofluid markers independently. Here we introduce an information theoretic framework for biomarker discovery, integrating biofluid and tissue information. This allows us to identify tissue information in peripheral biofluids. We treat tissue-biofluid interactions as an information channel through functional space using 26 proteomes from 45 different sources to determine quantitatively the correspondence of each biofluid for specific tissues via relative entropy calculation of proteomes mapped onto phenotype, function, and drug space. We report on a novel three-dimensional Si p-n junction that is capable of performing photovoltaic energy conversion. Vertically aligned pores with a very high aspect ratio of ≫ 100 were formed into a p-type Si substrate through an electrochemical etching process. A conformal p-n junction was then created in the etched porous silicon region by introducing phosphorous dopants through proximity rapid thermal diffusion. Al electrodes were subsequently evaporated on the front and back sides of the diode to establish electrical contact to the n-type and p-type regions respectively. Typical device structures resulted in highly three-dimensional diodes with pores extending up to 100 μm deep into the bulk Si. Porous films this thick correspond to an effective internal surface area of ∼ 5150 cm 2 /cm 3 . This ultimately makes the device applicable to both inorganic and organic next generation photovoltaics where it is desirable to maximize the amount of interfacing surface to a given photoactive compound. Dark box and illuminated I–V measurements of the device demonstrated successful monolithic integration of a p-n diode and a high internal surface area host matrix.

The breadth of biological data collected in the last decade has far outstripped the methods available to process it. To effectively investigate and explore this abundance of data, novel automated collection and analysis approaches must be devised. We have developed a new open software framework, the Open Genomic Analysis Platform (OGAP), to aid in the analysis of genomic data. It is capable of analyzing a variety of data source, and focuses on using information theory to characterize data. The frameworks has is capable of import a variety of genome tied data, and provides custom analysis and visualization of results. We then demonstrate the use of this framework analyzing the Prochlorococcus Marinus organism. We show a strong correlation between the information content of sequence data and up regulation of gene expression during lytic infection.

The rapid growth of the biomedical literature and genomic information presents a major challenge for determining the functional relationships among genes. In this study, we develop a Web-based bioinformatics software environment called FAUN or feature annotation using nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) to facilitate both the discovery and classification of functional relationships among genes. Both the computational complexity and parameterization of NMF for processing gene sets are discussed. We tested FAUN on three manually constructed gene document collections, and then used it to analyze several microarray-derived gene sets obtained from studies of the developing cerebellum in normal and mutant mice. FAUN provides utilities for collaborative knowledge discovery and identification of new gene relationships from text streams and repositories (e.g., MEDLINE). It is particularly useful for the validation and analysis of gene associations suggested by microarray experimentation.

Poly-Si TFTs, which have the similar structures to the MOSFETs, are now having extensive studies for the applications in display system. The high device mobility of these devices enables the possibility to form both the in-pixel switches and integrated circuits with the poly-Si technology, which may greatly reduce the process complexity and fabrication cost. [1] Though recently several kinds of products formed with poly-Si technology had hit the market, the degradation mechanisms of the devices under dynamic operation with the drain biased are still not so clear. Y. Uraoka previously reported that the degradation behavior of the devices under gate AC operation with source/drain grounded is as a result of the swept carriers as the device is about to be turned off. [2] We have also reported that the degradation for the device operated in the off region as the source/drain grounded is because of the discharge behavior in the channel as the gate voltage toggling in the off region. [3] But these stress conditions are still far from the real operation conditions in applications. In this work, the degradation of the poly-Si TFTs under gate dynamic operation with drain biased, which would be much similar to the conditions operated in real applications, is carefully investigated.

Flagellar swimming is one of the swimming methods used by micro-organisms to advance in aquatic environment. The undulating motion of the flagella was successfully imitated to create propulsion for a medical swimming micro robot. The influence of a head section on the performance of such a robot is shown analytically. Swimming experiments demonstrate forward and backward swimming of a novel magnetically driven swimming tail. We intend to use the flagellar swimming tail in a three tail configuration for neurosurgical intervention in the ventricular system.
