Fully polarimetric radar systems are capable of simultaneously transmitting and receiving in two orthogonal polarizations. Instantaneous radar polarimetry exploits both polarization modes of a dually-polarized radar transmitter and receiver on a pulse by pulse basis, and can improve the radar detection performance and suppress range sidelobes . In this paper, we extend the use of instantaneous radar polarimetry for radar systems with multiple dually-polarized transmit and receive antennas. Alamouti signal processing is used to coordinate transmission of Golay pairs of phase codes waveforms across polarizations and multiple antennas. The integration of multi- antenna signal processing with instantaneous radar polarimetry can further improve the detection performance, at a computational cost comparable to single channel matched filtering.

The steady national decline in women engineering students persists despite a plethora of programs and camps at engineering colleges around the country aimed at attracting girls into engineering and technical fields.1Discussions about this decline often suggest that influential cultural, media and marketing images may affect girls' career choices in ways that steer girls in directions other than engineering. When planning the first-ever overnight engineering camp for high school girls hosted at Boise State University, the planning team decided to embrace marketing methods to create realistic images about engineering that are relevant to the lives of girls. The planning team represented a partnership among Micron technology, the southwest Idaho Society of Women Engineers section, Boise public school staff, and Boise State University faculty, staff and graduate students. The team defined four messages that formed the foundation for curriculum development and communications with prospective participants: 1) Engineers help the world;2) Engineers think creatively;3) Engineers enjoy working with other people;and 4) Engineers earn a good living. Demand for the "e-Girls" camp far exceeded expectations, and student evaluations at the end of the program indicated success at affecting the girls' understanding, perceptions and interest about engineering careers. The Wireless Integrated MicroSystems (WIMS) engineering Research Center (ERC) has developed a broad comprehensive MEMS and microsystem curriculum suitable for upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students, and industry professionals. Five core courses were in the initial curriculum design. The design had flexibility that invited development of other core courses, as well as related technical electives and breadth electives. The core courses provide instruction in MEMS, Microsystems, major design and laboratory measurements, and societal impact. The course enrollments have been strong. A master of engineering in integrated microsystems degree program was developed so that industry professionals would have a focused set of coursework, while providing flexibility that would permit custom tailoring of the total course package to serve specific needs. Distance education dissemination of the courses as whole courses, or as discrete portions of course materials, was intended to be available;that goal has been realized. The core courses originate at the University of Michigan (UM), and have been distributed to Michigan State University (MSU), Michigan Technological University (MTU), Howard University (HU), University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez (UPRM), and Western Michigan University (WMU). Rochester Institute of technology (RIT) has used materials from the UM core courses in its offerings. Other institutions that have used the course web-streaming video and course materials are University of Lille, Darmstadt University, and Middle East Technical University. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

The liquid-crystal spatial light modulators (SLMs), are proving to be an important tool for research aimed at emulation of atmospheric turbulence. Emulating turbulence is necessary for testing the performance of adaptive-optics system in a controlled environment. SLMs have the ability to compensate for hundreds of waves of aberration through the use of modulo 2π operation. Thus, a device with only slightly more than one wave of phase stroke can emulate large phase of strokes. Optical modulation is not directly dependent on the back-plane used, but instead on the liquid-crystal and the liquid-crystal layer thickness, the same backplane can be used for many application. This modular design makes SLMs versatile across a wide range of technologies such as optical correlators, beamsteerers, optical trapping, and many more.

Mobile path loss prediction model for forest areas using MIMO fuzzy logic system

This paper proposes a method to predic mobile path loss in forests using MIMO fuzzy logic system. The multi-input was classified into seven input parameters defined as, X1 is number of trees/m2 and X2 to X7 are tree structure parameters. These crisp inputs are classified by fuzzifier to fuzzy sets and then inferenced using fuzzy linguistic rule base into multi - output path loss slopes via de-fuzzifier. For this study, we classified the terrains into high-, medium-, low- density and grass area and used the simple linguistic rules for prediction the path loss slopes. We performed measurements in different forest densities at a frequency of 1.8 GHz with base station antenna height in a range of 3, 4, and 5 m above ground while the receiving antenna height was fixed at 1.8 m above ground. The results have shown that fuzzy logic approach provides more accurate prediction of path loss slopes than that of conventional empirical mathematic model. The proposed models will be useful for the local wireless network and micro-cell design of mobile communication systems in forests.

We developed an algorithm which allows obtaining a Gram matrix having a particular pattern for crosscorrelations of the signature sequences. When it is used for real numbers, unit tight frame signature sets are obtained, as they are required by 2G or 3G CDMA systems. When this algorithm is used for complex numbers, complex valued signature sets with constant chip magnitude are obtained. The results are derived in the context of synchronous CDMA systems and numerical results are provided to illustrate the mathematical formalism.

Chaotic analysis and modeling methods were applied to a small collection of healthy individuals' sleeping EEGs in order to establish whether a common representational space could be discovered for use in comparative analysis. Common challenges were encountered and dealt with in a practical manner. The methods used and the choices made in this effort are described herein. The authors observe and describe a common representation, obtained from a delay coordinate embedding, that should be usable for comparative analysis leading to clinical utility

High-throughput generation of new types of relational biological datasets is creating a demand for network-based signal processing and pattern recognition to provide new insights. Such networks are often too large to interpret visually and too complicated to be explained solely based on local topological properties. Just as signal processing and statistical techniques have been used in traditional, sequential-based biological datasets, so too are methodologies needed to automatically discern patterns in the huge, emerging networks. One way to do this is by transforming these very large networks into discernable epitomes, or abstracts, of the original networks. This work presents an approach for doing this via topological compression. Through capturing nodes' global topologies and subsequent compression, a new network epitome can be derived. Here, this is done with an E. Coli gene regulation network, resulting in biological findings that could not be derived from the local topology of the original network.

In this paper, we investigate the properties of lethal genes in E. coli, our model organism. Topological analysis of networks of functional interactions among genes has shown that lethal genes share common local connectivity properties. In this paper, we analyze cellular networks across three domains. We show that a stochastic global topological analysis, via random walks, is more effective at predicting gene lethality than simply looking at local topology using the standard hub-based method. We also introduce the possibility of using metabolic pathways to understand lethal genes, as regulating these pathways is among one of the most important functions of the gene-encoded proteins. Additionally, we analyze lethal genes in terms of the Gene Ontology (GO) and find that the graph forms two highly connected clusters that are each GO enriched for specific terms. We also find that lethal metabolic regulators are extremely enriched. Finally, we provide applications of the work and avenues for future research.
