The proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is a popular control loop feedback mechanism that allows users to efficiently regulate their system outputs. As demonstrated in this project, one of the main applications of PID control is temperature regulation. This project describes the process of setting up the PID parameters of the controller with a trial-and-error tuning method that aims to implement better control system responses. MATLAB/Simulink is the software environment used to replicate the PID temperature controller, and then a real PID controller is tuned with an Arduino microcontroller. The temperature is regulated by a thermocouple, which employs the Seebeck effect to provide power based on a temperature gradient. Simulated and experimental results are compared to observe how a closed-loop PID system should behave. © 2022 IEEE.

Enhanced-SETL: A multi-variable deep reinforcement learning approach for contention window optimization in dense Wi-Fi networks

In this paper, we introduce the Enhanced Smart Exponential-Threshold-Linear (Enhanced-SETL) algorithm, a new approach that uses the multi-variable Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) framework to simultaneously optimize multiple settings of the Contention Window (CW) in IEEE 802.11 wireless networks. Unlike traditional DRL methods that adjust only a single CW parameter, our innovative approach simultaneously optimizes both the CW minimum (CWmin) and CW Threshold (CWThreshold), significantly improving network traffic control. We utilize a Double Deep Q-learning Network (DDQN) for dynamic updates of these CW settings, broadcasted across the dense Wi-Fi networks. This dual adjustment method, coupled with dynamic, data-driven updates, not only enhances throughput, but also reduces collision rates, and ensures fairness access across both static and dynamic wireless environments. Enhanced-SETL achieves a throughput improvement ranging from 3.55% up to 43.73% and from 3.98% up to 30.15% in static and dynamic scenarios over standard protocols and state-of-the-art DRL models, while maintaining a fairness index near 99% across diverse stations, showcasing its effectiveness and adaptability in various network conditions. © 2024

Sentiment analysis and emotion classification are two crucial components of natural language processing (NLP), which have been widely explored in recent years due to their broad applications. Sentiment analysis aims to identify the polarity of written texts, ranging from positive to negative. Meanwhile, emotion classification is focused on recognizing and categorizing the emotional states expressed in the text. To achieve a deeper understanding of sentiments and emotions, it's essential to utilize models like BERT transformers that can effectively interpret the context. The process begins with data preprocessing, including tokenization and noise removal, followed by fine-tuning techniques to adapt the BERT model to the proposed tasks. We employed the BERT model on four datasets obtained from various sources, including Twitter, news websites, and restaurant reviews, where each dataset represents a distinct Arabic dialect. Our proposed model outperforms commonly used techniques like LSTM and CNN, yielding superior results. Despite the progress made, there are still challenges to overcome, such as dealing with Arabic diacritics, the new Arabic Arabizi, which uses Latin characters, and handling Arabic idioms. Further research is required to address these challenges adequately.

Local Sequential MCMC for Data Assimilation with Applications in Geoscience

This paper presents a new data assimilation (DA) scheme based on a sequential Markov Chain Monte Carlo (SMCMC) DA technique [36] which is provably convergent and has been recently used for filtering, particularly for high-dimensional non-linear, and potentially, non-Gaussian state-space models. Unlike particle filters, which can be considered exact methods and can be used for filtering non-linear, non-Gaussian models, SMCMC does not assign weights to the samples/particles, and therefore, the method does not suffer from the issue of weight-degeneracy when a relatively small number of samples is used. We design a localization approach within the SMCMC framework that focuses on regions where observations are located and restricts the transition densities included in the filtering distribution of the state to these regions. This results in immensely reducing the effective degrees of freedom and thus improving the efficiency. We test the new technique on high-dimensional (d ∼ 104 − 105) linear Gaussian model and non-linear shallow water models with Gaussian noise with real and synthetic observations. For two of the numerical examples, the observations mimic the data generated by the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission led by NASA, which is a swath of ocean height observations that changes location at every assimilation time step. We also use a set of ocean drifters' real observations in which the drifters are moving according the ocean kinematics and assumed to have uncertain locations at the time of assimilation. Accurate cardiac motion estimation is a crucial step in assessing the kinematic and contractile properties of the cardiac chambers, thereby directly quantifying the regional cardiac function, which plays an important role in understanding myocardial diseases and planning their treatment. Since the cine cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides dynamic, high-resolution 3D images of the heart that depict cardiac motion throughout the cardiac cycle, cardiac motion can be estimated by finding the optical flow representation between the consecutive 3D volumes from a 4D cine cardiac MRI dataset, thereby formulating it as an image registration problem. Therefore, we propose a hybrid convolutional neural network (CNN) and Vision Transformer (ViT) architecture for deformable image registration of 3D cine cardiac MRI images for consistent cardiac motion estimation. We compare the image registration results of our proposed method with those of the VoxelMorph CNN model and conventional B-spline free form deformation (FFD) non-rigid image registration algorithm. We conduct all our experiments on the open-source Automated Cardiac Diagnosis Challenge (ACDC) dataset. The dental panoramic radiograph (DPR) is a pivotal diagnostic tool in dentistry. However, despite the growing prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI) across various medical domains, manual methods remain the prevailing means of interpreting DPR images. This study aims to introduce an advanced identification system for detecting seven dental conditions in DPR images by utilizing Faster R-CNN. The primary objectives are to enhance dentists' efficiency and evaluate the performance of various CNN models as foundational training networks. This study contributes significantly to the field in several notable ways. Firstly, including a Butterworth filter in the training process yielded an approximately 7% enhancement in judgment accuracy. Secondly, the proposed enhancement technology tailored to different dental symptoms effectively bolstered the training model's accuracy. Consequently, all dental conditions attained an accuracy rate exceeding 95% in CNN analysis. These accuracy enhancements ranged from 1.34% to 13.24% compared to existing recognition technologies. Thirdly, this study pioneers the application of Faster R-CNN for identifying dental conditions, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 94.18%. The outcomes of this study mark a substantial advancement compared to prior research and offer dentists a more efficient and convenient means of pre-diagnosing dental conditions. © 2013 IEEE.

This research article presents a modified isolated SEPIC converter suitable for high-power applications. It uses a transformer instead of coupled inductor for isolation between the input power source and the output load. The steady-state analysis is explained in detail. Thermal loss analysis is performed by using PLECS software. Further, a hardware prototype is developed to verify the performance aspects of the proposed converter.

Power quality disturbances can be observed as sags, swells, transients, and harmonics, and can affect customers at varying levels of intensity. It is the responsibility of the utility to supply customers with power, however power quality disruptions can occur during distribution. Traditionally, only voltage information is used to conduct power quality monitoring at the distribution level. It is common to record the RMS values of the bus voltages and to identify abnormal operations based on when a sag or swell occurs. This paper proposes a tool consisting of an algorithm and an accompanying graphical user interface (GUI) that can display historical voltage bus data, analyze the data, and provide the user with information that details voltage behavior outside of a user-defined threshold. The GUI gives the user the interactive ability to import data and set the desired threshold. The algorithm then detects events in the imported data outside of the chosen threshold. It also provides the user with event durations, magnitudes, local maximums, and area. The efficacy of the algorithm was verified by comparing the output determined by the algorithm versus the conclusion drawn by a human observer. Additionally, this paper provides a brief overview of two power quality curves: the computer and Business Equipment Manufacturers' Association (CBEMA) curve, and the Information technology Industry Council (ITIC) curve. These curves have been utilized in past decades as the common mechanisms to identify voltage variations and the duration of disturbances. Although these curves have proven to have great merit for use as tolerance curves, they may not capture all the necessary details of the events for power quality characterization.

In this paper we consider the filtering of partially observed multi-dimensional diffusion processes that are observed regularly at discrete times. We assume that, for numerical reasons, one has to time-discretize the diffusion process which typically leads to filtering that is subject to discretization bias. The approach in [16] establishes that when only having access to the time discretized diffusion it is possible to remove the discretization bias with an estimator of finite variance. We improve on the method in [16] by introducing a modified estimator based on the recent work of [17]. We show that this new estimator is unbiased and has finite variance. Moreover, we conjecture and verify in numerical simulations that substantial gains are obtained. That is, for a given mean square error (MSE) and a particular class of multi-dimensional diffusion, the cost to achieve the said MSE falls. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
