Interest in the two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) continues to intensify, driven by their suitable band gaps to supplant silicon as next-generation semiconductor materials. Among various TMDs, tungsten diselenide (WSe2) is renowned for its superior electrical properties in carrier density and mobility under ambient conditions. Despite its notable attributes, the behavior of monolayer WSe2 in the electron-doped regime under cryogenic conditions remains largely uncharted, particularly concerning its magnetotransport properties. In this study, we reveal the transport mechanisms of monolayer WSe2 from high temperatures down to the cryogenic regime. As evident by Efros–Shklovskii variable-range hopping (E-S VRH) in the cryogenic regime, strong Coulomb interactions arise between electrons. Above 8 K, an uncommon nonsaturated quadratic large magnetoresistance (MR) can be explained by the wave-function shrinkage model, which is consistent with the E-S VRH transport mechanism. Notably, the nonsaturated quadratic large MR shows a magnitude up to 1740% at 13 T. These findings underscore the potential applications for monolayer WSe2 in cryogenic field-effect devices, magnetic sensors, and memory devices and mark a significant advance in magnetotransport research.

In this paper we examine the numerical approximation of the limiting invariant measure associated with Feynman–Kac formulae. These are expressed in a discrete time formulation and are associated with a Markov chain and a potential function. The typical application considered here is the computation of eigenvalues associated with non-negative operators as found, for example, in physics or particle simulation of rare-events. We focus on a novel lagged approximation of this invariant measure, based upon the introduction of a ratio of time-averaged Feynman–Kac marginals associated with a positive operator iterated l∈N times;a lagged Feynman–Kac formula. This estimator and its approximation using Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) are commonly used in the physics literature. In short, DMC is an iterative algorithm involving N∈N particles or walkers simulated in parallel, that undergo sampling and resampling operations. In this work, it is shown that for the DMC approximation of the lagged Feynman–Kac formula, one has an almost sure characterization of the L1-error as the time parameter (iteration) goes to infinity and this is at most of O(exp{−κl}/N), for κ>0. In addition a non-asymptotic in time, and time uniform L1−bound is proved which is O(l/N). We also prove a novel central limit theorem to give a characterization of the exact asymptotic in time variance. This analysis demonstrates that the strategy used in physics, namely, to run DMC with N and l small and, for long time enough, is mathematically justified. Our results also suggest how one should choose N and l in practice. We emphasize that these results are not restricted to physical applications;they have broad relevance to the general problem of particle simulation of the Feynman–Kac formula, which is utilized in a great variety of scientific and engineering fields. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

We consider the long time behavior of Wong-Zakai approximations of stochastic differential equations. These piecewise smooth diffusion approximations are of great importance in many areas, such as those with ordinary differential equations associated to random smooth fluctuations;e.g. robust filtering problems. In many examples, the mean error estimate bounds that have been derived in the literature can grow exponentially with respect to the time horizon. We show in a simple example that indeed mean error estimates do explode exponentially in the time parameter, i.e. in that case a Wong-Zakai approximation is only useful for extremely short time intervals. When is heterogeneity in the composition of an autonomous robotic team beneficial and when is it detrimental? We investigate and answer this question in the context of a minimally viable model that examines the role of heterogeneous speeds in perimeter defense problems, where defenders share a total allocated speed budget. We consider two distinct problem settings and develop strategies based on dynamic programming and on local interaction rules. We present a theoretical analysis of both approaches and our results are extensively validated using simulations. Interestingly, our results demonstrate that the viability of heterogeneous teams depends on the amount of information available to the defenders. Moreover, our results suggest a universality property: across a wide range of problem parameters the optimal ratio of the speeds of the defenders remains nearly constant. Unlike its intercept, a linear classifier’s weight vector cannot be tuned by a simple grid search. Hence, this paper proposes weight vector tuning of a generic binary linear classifier through the parameterization of a decomposition of the discriminant by a scalar which controls the trade-off between conflicting informative and noisy terms. By varying this parameter, the original weight vector is modified in a meaningful way. Applying this method to a number of linear classifiers under a variety of data dimensionality and sample size settings reveals that the classification performance loss due to non-optimal native hyperparameters can be compensated for by weight vector tuning. This yields computational savings as the proposed tuning method reduces to tuning a scalar compared to tuning the native hyperparameter, which may involve repeated weight vector generation along with its burden of optimization, dimensionality reduction, etc., depending on the classifier. It is also found that weight vector tuning significantly improves the performance of Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) under high estimation noise. Proceeding from this second finding, an asymptotic study of the misclassification probability of the parameterized LDA classifier in the growth regime where the data dimensionality and sample size are comparable is conducted. Using random matrix theory, the misclassification probability is shown to converge to a quantity that is a function of the true statistics of the data. Additionally, an estimator of the misclassification probability is derived. Finally, computationally efficient tuning of the parameter using this estimator is demonstrated on real data. Vibrations transmitted throughout the hand and arm during touch contact play a central role in haptic science and engineering but are challenging to model or experimentally characterize. Here, we present SkinSource, a data-driven toolbox for predicting skin vibrations across the upper limb in response to user-specified input forces. The toolbox leverages impulse response measurements that encode the physics of vibration transmission across the hands and arms of four participants and provides software tools for analyzing the predicted skin responses. We show that the SkinSource predictions closely match experimental measurements and confirm the underlying assumption of linear vibration transmission in the skin. We also demonstrate through several usage examples how SkinSource can act as a versatile computational platform for haptic research applications, such as characterizing vibrotactile transmission in the skin, engineering haptic interfaces, and investigating touch perception.

By the semipolar blue single GaN μ-LED and blended Ir(piq)2(acac) + CC-MP5 polymer thin film color converter, a high-speed white-light μ-LED-based system is built up for the applications of short-distance VLC. The characteristics and properties of both devices are analyzed to understand the requirements for transmission and illumination. By selecting the growing orient, the influence of QCSE is reduced in this GaN μ-LED. Meanwhile, possessing the low reflection characteristic, it is beneficial for signal modulation. For the polymer thin film color converter with a lifetime of 7.8 ns, low surface reflection and high conversion efficiency are thought of good properties. Color-converted cool white light has a CCT of around 7000 K and high color accuracy with a CRI of about 90. The APD-combined frequency responses of the GaN μ-LED and GaN μ-LED + polymer are measured as 750 MHz and 600 MHz, respectively. After the optimization by utilizing the adaptive SNR-flattening pre-emphasis algorithm, the transmission performance of the white-light μ-LED is significantly promoted. For NRZ-OOK encoding, a 1.4 Gbps 0.15-m free-space transmission is achieved with a rising time of 656.33 ps, a falling time of 493.32 ps, and a Q-factor of 4.75. Besides, in more advanced data formats, the performance of this white-light μ-LED can be better highlighted. For the same 0.15-m free-space VLC, a high-speed 3 Gbps broadband 8-QAM-OFDM transmission is fulfilled with an EVM of 23.9%, an average SNR of 12.5, and a BER below 3.8 × 10^-3;while to the best of our knowledge, a record 3.5 Gbps BL-DMT transmission is implemented as well. This white-light μ-LED can also be integrated into large-scale arrays for multi-functional VLC applications. © 2024 The Authors

We consider the problem of estimating expectations with respect to a target distribution with an unknown normalizing constant, and where even the unnormalized target needs to be approximated at finite resolution. This setting is ubiquitous across science and engineering applications, for example in the context of Bayesian inference where a physics-based model governed by an intractable partial differential equation (PDE) appears in the likelihood. A multi-index Sequential Monte Carlo (MISMC) method is used to construct ratio estimators which provably enjoy the complexity improvements of multi-index Monte Carlo (MIMC) as well as the efficiency of Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) for inference. In particular, the proposed method provably achieves the canonical complexity of MSE−1, while single level methods require MSE−ξ for ξ > 1. This is illustrated on examples of Bayesian inverse problems with an elliptic PDE forward model in 1 and 2 spatial dimensions, where ξ = 5/4 and ξ = 3/2, respectively. It is also illustrated on more challenging log Gaussian process models, where single level complexity is approximately ξ = 9/4 and multilevel Monte Carlo (or MIMC with an inappropriate index set) gives ξ = 5/4 + ω, for any ω > 0, whereas our method is again canonical. We also provide novel theoretical verification of the product-form convergence results which MIMC requires for Gaussian processes built in spaces of mixed regularity defined in the spectral domain, which facilitates acceleration with fast Fourier transform methods via a cumulant embedding strategy, and may be of independent interest in the context of spatial statistics and machine learning.
