Deep convolutional neural network model for short-term electricity price forecasting

In the modern power market, electricity trading is an extremely competitive industry. More accurate price forecast is crucial to help electricity producers and traders make better decisions. In this paper, a novel method of convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed to rapidly provide hourly forecasting in the energy market. To improve prediction accuracy, we divide the annual electricity price data into four categories by seasons and conduct training and forecasting for each category respectively. By comparing the proposed method with other existing methods, we find that the proposed model has achieved outstanding results, the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and root mean square error (RMSE) for each category are about 5.5% and 3, respectively. Shaping the light emission characteristics of laser systems is of great importance in various areas of science and technology. In a typical lasing arrangement, the transverse spatial profile of a laser mode tends to remain self-similar throughout the entire cavity. Going beyond this paradigm, we demonstrate here how to shape a spatially evolving mode such that it faithfully settles into a pair of bi-orthogonal states at the two opposing facets of a laser cavity. This is achieved by purposely designing a structure that allows the lasing mode to encircle a non-Hermitian exceptional point while deliberately avoiding non-adiabatic jumps. The resulting state transfer reflects the unique topology of the associated Riemann surfaces associated with this singularity. Our approach provides a route to develop versatile mode selective active devices, and sheds light on the intriguing topological features of exceptional points. The utilization of cybersecurity information for improving security posture of an organization resulted in the evolution of cybersecurity information sharing ecosystems. In this study, we consider three stakeholders i.e. cybersecurity solution providers, information providers, and end users, who have different values. Their values depend on interrelationship among them and are also based on several value parameters. We identified six value parameters and analyzed their impacts on the values of stakeholders. A simulation model has been developed using system dynamics to analyze the impact of value parameters on the values of stakeholders. The results show that end users are the main source of value in cybersecurity information sharing ecosystems, implying an effect of demand side economies of scale. The cybersecurity solution and information providers are majorly benefiting from a growing number of end users. The value of end users is mainly affected by quality of services, quality of information and the size of trusted communities. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A Two-stage Reconfiguration in Network Function Virtualization: Toward Service Function Chain Optimization

Network Function Virtualization (NFV), as a promising paradigm, speeds up the service deployment by separating network functions from proprietary devices and deploying them on common servers in the form of software. Any service in NFV-enabled networks is achieved as a Service Function Chain (SFC) which consists of a series of ordered Virtual Network Functions (VNFs). However, migration of VNFs for more flexible services within a dynamic NFV-enabled network is a key challenge to be addressed. Current VNF migration studies mainly focus on single VNF migration decisions without considering the sharing and concurrent migration of VNF instances. In this paper, we assume that each deployed VNF is used by multiple SFCs and deal with the optimal placement for the contemporaneous migration of VNFs based on the actual network situation. We formalize the VNF migration and SFC reconfiguration problem as a mathematical model, which aims to minimize the VNF migration between nodes or the total number of core changes per node. The approach is a two-stage MILP based on optimal order to solve the reconfiguration. Extensive evaluation shows that the proposed approach can reduce the change in terms of location or number of cores per node in a 6-node and 14-node networks while ensuring network latency compared with the model without reconfiguration. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

ON THE STABILITY OF POSITIVE SEMIGROUPS

The stability and contraction properties of positive integral semigroups on Polish spaces are investigated. Our novel analysis is based on the extension of V -norm contraction methods, associated to functionally weighted Banach spaces for Markov semigroups, to positive semigroups. This methodology is applied to a general class of positive and possibly time-inhomogeneous bounded integral semigroups and their normalised versions. The spectral theorems that we develop are an extension of Perron-Frobenius and Krein-Rutman theorems for positive operators to a class of time-varying positive semigroups. In the context of time-homogeneous models, the regularity conditions discussed in the present article appear to be necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of leading eigenvalues. We review and illustrate the impact of these results in the context of positive semigroups arising in transport theory, physics, mathematical biology and signal processing. Ramsey Envelope Modulation in NV Diamond Magnetometry

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) spin ensembles in diamond provide an advanced magnetic sensing platform, with applications in both the physical and life sciences. The development of isotopically engineered 15NV diamond offers advantages over naturally occurring 14NV for magnetometry, due to its simpler hyperfine structure. However, for sensing modalities requiring a bias magnetic field not aligned with the sensing NV axis, the absence of a quadrupole moment in the 15N nuclear spin leads to pronounced envelope modulation effects in time-dependent measurements of 15NV spin evolution. While such behavior in spin echo experiments are well studied, analogous effects in Ramsey measurements and the implications for magnetometry remain under-explored. Here, we derive the modulated 15NV Ramsey response to a misaligned bias field, using a simple vector description of the effective magnetic field on the nuclear spin. The predicted modulation properties are then compared to experimental results, revealing significant magnetic sensitivity loss if unaddressed. We demonstrate that double-quantum coherences of the NV S = 1 electronic spin states dramatically suppress these envelope modulations, while additionally proving resilient to other parasitic effects such as strain heterogeneity and temperature shifts. © 2022, CC BY.

ARCSnake: Reconfigurable snake-like robot with Archimedean screw propulsion for multi-domain mobility

Exploring and navigating in extreme environments, such as caves, oceans, and planetary bodies, are often too hazardous for humans, and as such, robots are possible surrogates. These robots are met with significant locomotion challenges that require traversing a wide range of surface roughnesses and topologies. Previous locomotion strategies, involving wheels or ambulatory motion, such as snake platforms, have success on specific surfaces but fail in others which could be detrimental in exploration and navigation missions. In this paper, we present a novel approach that combines snake-like robots with an Archimedean screw locomotion mechanism to provide multiple, effective mobility strategies in a large range of environments, including those that are difficult to traverse for wheeled and ambulatory robots. This work develops a robotic system called ARCSnake to demonstrate this locomotion principle and tested it in a variety of different terrains and environments in order to prove its controllable, multi-domain, navigation capabilities. CNN-based cardiac motion extraction to generate deformable geometric left ventricle myocardial models from Cine MRI

Patient-specific left ventricle (LV) myocardial models have the potential to be used in a variety of clinical scenarios for improved diagnosis and treatment plans. Cine cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) imaging provides high resolution images to reconstruct patient-specific geometric models of the LV myocardium. With the advent of deep learning, accurate segmentation of cardiac chambers from cine cardiac MR images and unsupervised learning for image registration for cardiac motion estimation on a large number of image datasets is attainable. Here, we propose a deep leaning-based framework for the development of patient-specific geometric models of LV myocardium from cine cardiac MR images, using the Automated Cardiac Diagnosis Challenge (ACDC) dataset. We use the deformation field estimated from the VoxelMorph-based convolutional neural network (CNN) to propagate the isosurface mesh and volume mesh of the end-diastole (ED) frame to the subsequent frames of the cardiac cycle. We assess the CNN-based propagated models against segmented models at each cardiac phase, as well as models propagated using another traditional nonrigid image registration technique. © 2021, CC BY.

We have studied the terahertz response of a bulk single crystal of La0.875Sr0.125MnO3at around its Curie temperature, observing large changes in the real and imaginary parts of the optical conductivity as a function of magnetic field. The terahertz resistance and capacitance extracted from the optical conductivity rapidly increased with increasing magnetic field and did not show any sign of saturation up to 6 T, reaching 60% and 15%, respectively, at 180 K. The observed terahertz colossal magnetoresistance and magnetocapacitance effects can be qualitatively explained by using a two-component model that assumes the coexistence of two phases with vastly different conductivities. These results demonstrate the potential use of perovskite manganites for developing efficient terahertz devices based on magnetic modulations of the amplitude and phase of terahertz waves.
