Cryptography is the science and art of maintaining the security of messages when messages are sent from one place to another. One of the ways securing the form of text message information is by the encryption process using the Vigenere Cipher algorithm and utilizing the One Time Pad (OTP) algorithm as a key generator, where the message will be random when it is opened. The message encryption process used the vigenere cipher algorithm while OTP is used to secure the key with the same formula. After this research has been done, an application was designed to secure text messages by converting the text message into a random message so that the message was unreadable due to a secret message that could not be known by others. The results achieved can secure an encrypted message that cannot be reopened and if those messages were reopened, they must be decrypted. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Can a robot be a personal dating coach? Even with the increasing amount of conversational data on the internet, the implementation of conversational robots remains a challenge. In particular, a detailed and professional counseling log is expensive and not publicly accessible. In this paper, we develop a robot dating coaching system leveraging corpus from online communities. We examine people’s perceptions of the dating coaching robot with a dialogue module. 97 participants joined to have a conversation with the robot, and 30 of them evaluated the robot. The results indicate that participants thought the robot could become a dating coach while considering the robot is entertaining rather than helpful. © 2020, CC-BY.

The interdisciplinary nature of robots makes robotics a valuable STEM pedagogical tool. Robots are increasingly used across industry sectors to improve production throughputs while maintaining product quality. The benefits of robotics, however, depend on workers with up-to-date knowledge and skills to maintain and use existing robots, enhance future technologies, and educate users. It is critical that education institutions respond to the demand for robotics specialists by offering courses and professional certification in robotics and automation. This NSF sponsored project introduces a new approach for Industrial Robotics in electrical engineering technology (EET) programs at Michigan Tech and bay de Noc Community College. The curriculum and software developed by this collaboration of two- and four-year institutions match industry needs and provide a replicable model for programs around the US. The project also addresses the need for certified robotic training centers (CRTCs) and provides curriculum and training opportunities for students from other institutions, industry representatives, and displaced workers. In this article, authors report on Year 2 project progress, including the achievements in the developing "RobotRun" robotic simulation software, professional development opportunities for the faculty members from the other institutions, training workshops for K-12 teachers, and robotic one-day camps for high school students. Summary: Battery storage is expected to play a crucial role in the low-carbon transformation of energy systems. The deployment of battery storage in the power gird, however, is currently severely limited by its low economic viability, which results from not only high capital costs but also the lack of flexible and efficient utilization schemes and business models. Making utility-scale battery storage portable through trucking unlocks its capability to provide various on-demand services. We introduce the potential applications of utility-scale portable energy storage and investigate its economics in California using a spatiotemporal decision model that determines the optimal operation and transportation schedules of portable storage. We show that mobilizing energy storage can increase its life-cycle revenues by 70% in some areas and improve renewable energy integration by relieving local transmission congestion. The life-cycle revenue of spatiotemporal arbitrage can fully compensate for the costs of portable energy storage system in several regions in California, including San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area. The use of computer-aided diagnosis in the reliable and fast detection of corona virus disease (COVID-19) has become a necessity to prevent the spread of the virus during the pandemic to ease the burden on the medical infrastructure. Chest X-ray (CXR) imaging has several advantages over other imaging techniques as it is cheap, easily accessible, fast and portable. CXR images are sometimes of poor quality and so image enhancement techniques can help the machine learning models to extract valuable discriminating features from the image. Numerous works have been reported on COVID-19 detection from smaller set of original X-ray images. However, the effect of image enhancement in COVID-19 detection was not reported in the literature. The exotic physics emerging in non-Hermitian systems with balanced distributions of gain and loss has drawn a great deal of attention in recent years. These systems exhibit phase transitions and exceptional point singularities in their spectra, at which eigen-values and eigen-modes coalesce and the overall dimensionality is reduced. Among several peculiar phenomena observed at exceptional points, an especially intriguing property, with relevant practical potential, consists in the inherently enhanced sensitivity to small-scale perturbations. So far, however, these principles have been implemented at the expenses of precise fabrication and tuning requirements, involving tailored nano-structured devices with controlled distributions of optical gain and loss. In this work, anti-parity-time symmetric phase transitions and exceptional point singularities are demonstrated in a single strand of standard single-mode telecommunication fibre, using a setup consisting of entirely of off-the-shelf components. Two propagating signals are amplified and coupled through stimulated Brillouin scattering, which makes the process non-Hermitian and enables exquisite control over gain and loss. Singular response to small variations around the exceptional point and topological features arising around this singularity are experimentally demonstrated with large precision, enabling robustly enhanced spectral response to small-scale changes in the Brillouin frequency shift. Our findings open exciting opportunities for the exploration of non-Hermitian phenomena over a table-top setup, with straightforward extensions to higher-order Hamiltonians and applications in quantum optics, nanophotonics and sensing. A theoretical model for describing the emission spectra of microsphere cavities is presented and its predictions of detailed line shapes of emission spectra associated with whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of various orders in ZnO microspheres (MSs) are verified experimentally by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The interplay of the Purcell effect, quality factor, and leaky modes in spontaneous and stimulated emission spectra related to WGMs of all orders is revealed. The key success of the theory is based on the expansion of the full Green’s function of the MS in terms of all possible resonance modes in complex frequency space, which allows incorporation of contributions from leaky modes, stimulated emission processes, and the Purcell effect. We show that the spontaneous emission spectrum calculated according to Mie theory (without the Purcell effect) is dominated by the contribution of leaky modes, while the spontaneous and stimulated emission enhanced by the Purcell effect is responsible for the main WGM resonance peaks observed experimentally. It is found that the stimulated emission peaks are doubly enhanced by their respective mode quality factor Q: one factor from the Purcell effect and the other factor from the photon number derived from the rate equation. After combining all these effects, the theory can provide a quantitative description of fine features of both TE and TM modes (including higher-order modes) observed in the PL spectra of ZnO MSs. Surprisingly, it is found that for ZnO MS with a diameter larger than 5 μm, the PL emission spectrum is dominated by higher-order modes. The quantitative understanding of the interplay of these emission mechanisms should prove useful for optimizing the performance of light-emitting devices based on microresonators.

In this paper we present an implementation of a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) signal transmission using a visible light communications (VLC) setup. VLC is a novel technology that employs off-the-shelf LED lamps to offer high-speed wireless communication, specially at indoor environments, where reportedly the majority of wireless data traffic takes place. By using the optical wireless channel, we manage to transmit downlink LTE signals in distances of up to 3 m, while keeping an EVM lower than the limit compliant.
