Stiffness of human cancers strongly correlate with their pathology, and it is reported that stiffness can be used as a biomarker. Furthermore, comprehensive analysis has suggested the usefulness of cancer stiffness in diagnosis and malignancy prediction and its association with molecular expression, as well as its potential for predicting and diagnosing postoperative complications. Neurosurgeons perform tumor resection relying on the sensations that they feel with their own fingertips (tactile sensation), but it takes years of surgical experience to accurately distinguish brain tumor from the surrounding normal brain *** is a new technology regarding touching sensation. Especially, our technology, real haptics, can communicate, record, and reproduce the real sensation. It is also possible to measure and analyze the physical property such as stiffness of the touching object from the obtained haptic *** developed a surgical forceps equipped with haptics technology to distinguish brain tumor tissue from surrounding normal brain tissue. three glioblastoma cell lines (SF126, U87, U251) and a malignant meningioma cell line (IOMM-Lee) were each transplanted intracranially into 5 nude mice. Tumor size was periodically monitored and mice were euthanized at appropriate time points. The stiffness of the tumor and normal brain tissue was measured using a master-slave integrated surgical forceps prototype. The results statistically showed that all four types of brain tumor tissues were stiffer than normal brain tissues. (p = 0.001) In addition, malignant meningioma was statistically stiffer than glioblastomas. (p = 0.025) This result is consistent with actual surgical *** have shown that our surgical forceps has the ability to distinguish pathology of brain tumors as well as to distinguish brain tumor from normal brain tissue. The rapidly growing quantum information science and engineering (QISE) industry will require both quantum-aware and quantum-proficient engineers at the bachelor's level. We provide a roadmap for building a quantum engineering education program to satisfy this need. For quantum-aware engineers, we describe how to design a first quantum engineering course accessible to all STEM students. For the education and training of quantum-proficient engineers, we detail both a quantum engineering minor accessible to all STEM majors, and a quantum track directly integrated into individual engineering majors. We propose that such programs typically require only three or four newly developed courses that complement existing engineering and science classes available on most larger campuses. We describe a conceptual quantum information science course for implementation at any post-secondary institution, including community colleges and military schools. QISE presents extraordinary opportunities to work towards rectifying issues of inclusivity and equity that continue to be pervasive within engineering. We present a plan to do so and describe how quantum engineering education presents an excellent set of education research opportunities. Finally, we outline a hands-on training plan on quantum hardware, a key component of any quantum engineering program, with a variety of technologies including optics, atoms and ions, cryogenic and solid-state technologies, nanofabrication, and control and readout electronics. Our recommendations provide a flexible framework that can be tailored for academic institutions ranging from teaching and undergraduate-focused two- and four-year colleges to research-intensive universities. © 2021, CC BY.

This paper elaborates the development of machine learning approach merged with statistical hypothesis testing aimed at enhancing the operation of photovoltaic (PV) systems by developing intelligent PV fault detection framework. Fault detection in PV systems is important to ensure optimal energy harvesting and reliable power production because PV systems usually operate in a harsh outdoor environment and tend to suffer various faults. In this paper, therefore, special attention is paid to detection of various faults during different modes of operation. The proposed approach merges the benefits of machine learning technique (MLT) with statistical hypothesis testing to enhance the fault detection and monitoring of PV systems. The proposed technique will be effective in monitoring the PV faults under both normal and abnormal conditions. For the framework developed, the modeling phase is addressed using MLT and the faults are detected using the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) chart. The MLT is used to compute the residuals monitored and the GLRT chart is applied to the monitored residuals evaluated for fault detection purposes. The developed MLT-based GLRT algorithm is implemented and validated using both simulated and real PV data. The results are evaluated in terms of false alarm rates (FAR), missed detection rates (MDR) and computation time.

It is imperative to develop tools to characterize cells with the diseased and normal mitochondria to monitor the healthiness of cells and take preventive measures for potential mitochondrial disease development. Here, we adopt insulator dielectrophoresis (i-DEP), by utilizing the intrinsic dielectric response of a cell to an external AC electric field to differentiate cells, containing partially diseased and normal mitochondria. Taking advantage of dielectrophoresis, DEP, principle, we developed a quick diagnostic method to detect mitochondrial disease in living cells, which is not readily achievable by conventional cell cytometry. © 2019 CBMS-0001.

Redox cofactors mediate many enzymatic processes and are increasingly employed in biomedical and energy applications. Exploring the influence of external magnetic fields on redox cofactor chemistry can enhance our understanding of magnetic-field-sensitive biological processes and allow the application of magnetic fields to modulate redox reactions involving cofactors. Through a combination of experiments and modeling, we investigate the influence of magnetic fields on electrochemical reactions in redox cofactor solutions. By employing flavin mononucleotide (FMN) cofactor as a model system, we characterize magnetically induced changes in Faradaic currents. We find that radical pair intermediates have negligible influence on current increases in FMN solution upon application of a magnetic field. The dominant mechanism underlying the observed current increases is the magneto-hydrodynamic effect. We extend our analyses to other diffusion-limited electrochemical reactions of redox cofactor solutions and arrive at similar conclusions, highlighting the opportunity to use this framework in redox cofactor chemistry.

Background: Improving the accessibility of screening diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from non-diabetic kidney disease (NDKD) are two major challenges in the field of diabetes care. We aimed to develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning system to detect DKD and isolated diabetic nephropathy from retinal fundus images. Methods: In this population-based study, we developed a retinal image-based AI-deep learning system, DeepDKD, pretrained using 734 084 retinal fundus images. First, for DKD detection, we used 486 312 retinal images from 121 578 participants in the Shanghai Integrated Diabetes Prevention and Care System for development and internal validation, and ten multi-ethnic datasets from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and the UK (65 406 participants) for external validation. Second, to differentiate isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, we used 1068 retinal images from 267 participants for development and internal validation, and three multi-ethnic datasets from China, Malaysia, and the UK (244 participants) for external validation. Finally, we conducted two proof-of-concept studies: a prospective real-world study with 3 months' follow-up to evaluate the effectiveness of DeepDKD in screening DKD;and a longitudinal analysis of the effectiveness of DeepDKD in differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD on renal function changes with 4·6 years' follow-up. Findings: For detecting DKD, DeepDKD achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0·842 (95% CI 0·838–0·846) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·791–0·826 across external validation datasets. For differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, DeepDKD achieved an AUC of 0·906 (0·825–0·966) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·733–0·844 across external validation datasets. Topologically stable field configurations appear in many fields of physics, from elementary particles to condensed matter and cosmology. Deep physical relations and common physical features of a large variety of very different solitonic states in these systems arise from the mathematical similarity of phenomenological equations. During the last decade, chiral liquid crystals and chiral magnets took on the role of model objects for experimental investigation of topological solitons and understanding of their nonsingular field configurations. This is directly related to the discovery of particle-like chiral skyrmions, which are also considered as promising ingredients for technological applications. Here we introduce a paradigm of facile skyrmionic networks with mutually-orthogonal orientations of constituent isolated skyrmions. On the one hand, such networks are envisioned as a novel concept of spintronic devices based, e.g., on gapless skyrmion motion along each other, and are presumably responsible for precursor phenomena near the ordering temperatures of bulk cubic helimagnets. In particular, we demonstrate an interconversion between mutually orthogonal skyrmions: horizontal skyrmions may swirl into an intermediate spring-like states and subsequently squeeze into vertical skyrmions with both polarities. On the other hand, skyrmion tubes are considered as building blocks for particle-like states with more involved internal structure. A family of target-skyrmions, which includes an overlooked so far type with a multiple topological charge, is formed owing to the tendency to minimize the interaction energy between vertical and horizontal skyrmions. The conical phase serves as a suitable background for considered skyrmion evolution. It substantializes the attracting skyrmion-skyrmion interaction in the skyrmionic networks, shapes their internal structure and guides the nucleation processes. There have been many studies conducted related to Smart City, IT Governance and Big Data. In this study aims to find out how the relationship between the three and how to form a framework to explain it. The methodology used is qualitative by looking for some literature on smart city framework, IT Governance framework, and a Big Data framework. From these results, an overall picture of the relationship between the three is concluded, where Big Data has a role in IT Governance. and also the relationship of IT Governance to the realization of Smart City. And the final results of this study produce a framework to explain the relationship between Smart City, IT Governance and Big Data.
