We present an end-to-end image-processing pipeline that is accelerated using coupled spin-torque oscillator (STO) arrays for its key computational kernels. Coupled oscillator arrays are used throughout the pipeline, including the computation of spectral and spatial transforms in the saliency stages and convolution in the CNN-based classifiers in the back end. We present results for two types of oscillator models, a generic, parameterized, model that captures variations in coupling asymmetry, locking range, and noise, and a hardware calibrated spice model of a coupled STO array with data curve fitted to a closed-form C++ model. The pipeline was run over three benchmark datasets, the Neovision2 Tower and Helicopter datasets [1] and the DARPA Vivid dataset [2]. We show the sensitivity of the output to parameter variations in the generic model and show equivalent performance for the STO model.

This paper aims to facilitate the owner to control water pump machine from the vacuum, and the condition of the water is it full or not in house or apartment. The current control system still has many limitations in controlling the water pump machine at home or apartment. The water machine control system was designed with device that has a smart surveillance system that can be accessed with Android smartphone and all information from or to machine control system will command by using SMS, this device create a development of Arduino UNO microcontroller technology that allows the reading of the GSM Module and connected with SMS Gateway. Experiment results facilitate real-time water control and much easy for the owner to control water tank.

The use of an individual's neural response to stimuli (the event-related potential or ERP) has potential as a biometric because it is highly resistant to fraud relative to other conventional authentication systems. P300 is an ERP in human electroencephalography (EEG) that occurs in response to an oddball stimulus when an individual is actively engaged in a target detection task. Because P300 is consistently detectable from almost every subject, it is considered a potential signal for biometric applications. This paper presents a feasibility study of using topological plots of P300 as a biometric in subject authentication. The variation in latency and location of P300 response of 24 participants performing the P300Speller task were studied. Data sets from four participants were used for algorithm training; data from the other 20 participants were used as imposters for algorithm validation. The result showed that the algorithm was able to correctly identify three out of these four participants. Validation test also proved that the algorithm was able to reject 95% of the imposters for those three authenticated participants.

Plasmonic metasurfaces have been employed for tuning and controlling light enabling various novel applications. Their appeal is enhanced with the incorporation of an active element with the metasurfaces paving the way for dynamic control. In this letter, we realize a dynamic polarization state generator using graphene-integrated anisotropic metasurface (GIAM), where a linear incidence polarization is controllably converted into an elliptical one. The anisotropic metasurface leads to an intrinsic polarization conversion when illuminated with non-orthogonal incident polarization. Additionally, the single-layer graphene allows us to tune the phase and intensity of the reflected light on the application of a gate voltage, enabling dynamic polarization control. The stokes polarization parameters of the reflected light are measured using rotating polarizer method and it is demonstrated that a large change in the ellipticity as well as orientation angle can be induced by this device. We also provide experimental evidence that the titl angle can change independent of the ellipticity going from positive values to nearly zero to negative values while ellipticity is constant. In this paper, we design and simulate the 19 mm × 16 mm × 3.15 mm meander implantable antenna operating in industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) 2.4-2.5 GHz band. The resonant frequency and impedance matching are fine tuned to around 2.45 GHz by changing the height and position of antenna components. The comparisons of three proposed antennas are performed and then discussed. The antenna design with graphene patch shows the most outstanding results. The bandwidth and 3 dB-beamwidths increase significantly and the minimum average specific absorption rate (SAR) can be achieved.

The development of the pattern recognition techniques in voice recognition has rapidly increased. Many methods are used to create a system that is reliable and easily accessible so that the recognition accuracy is high. To find the pattern recognition system that is robust and reliable, proper feature extraction methods are needed. In this case, the proper method of the feature extraction is an efficient and effective method when it is used in recognizing specific features of data. This paper presents an effective and efficient method of the extracting features for speech processing. The focus of this work is to explore the feature extraction methods which are the most efficient and effective in recognizing Indonesian phonemes. The Feature extraction methods used and compared in the study are the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT). The wavelet transform was done on the 2 nd level until 4 th level of decomposition. The comparison of the performance of both feature extraction methods are presented at the end of this section, with a statistical comparison, to draw a conclusion that the DWT methods have a better performance in terms of effectiveness and efficiency compared with the WPT method. The results of the study show that the effectiveness ratio is 60% versus 40% and the efficiency ratio is 57% versus 43%.

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are brief, bright, extragalactic radio flashes1, 2. Their physical origin remains unknown, but dozens of possible models have been postulated3. Some FRB sources exhibit repeat bursts4–7. Though over a hundred FRB sources have been discovered to date8, only four have been localised and associated with a host galaxy9–12, with just one of the four known to repeat9. The properties of the host galaxies, and the local environments of FRBs, provide important clues about their physical origins. However, the first known repeating FRB has been localised to a low-metallicity, irregular dwarf galaxy, and the apparently non-repeating sources to higher-metallicity, massive elliptical or star-forming galaxies, suggesting that perhaps the repeating and apparently non-repeating sources could have distinct physical origins. Here we report the precise localisation of a second repeating FRB source6, FRB 180916.J0158+65, to a star-forming region in a nearby (redshift z = 0.0337 ±0.0002) massive spiral galaxy, whose properties and proximity distinguish it from all known hosts. The lack of both a comparably luminous persistent radio counterpart and a high Faraday rotation measure6 further distinguish the local environment of FRB 180916.J0158+65 from that of the one previously localised repeating FRB source, FRB 121102. This demonstrates that repeating FRBs have a wide range of luminosities, and originate from diverse host galaxies and local environments. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Focusing on the quality of education, skills, and employability of our graduates in computing-related fields, this work proposes a cost-effective approach to achieve these goals. The Evaluation and Proficiency Infrastructure, Curricula, and Services (EPICS) extends successful methods in other units on campus in an innovative way as synergistic combination of faculty, Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs), and educational technology using the Canvas Webcourses Learning Management System (LMS) already in use at our college. We integrate computer-based evaluation with a close-knit review and learning cycle based on directed and open tutoring to collectively form the Evaluation and Proficiency Center (EPC). Initial results have been encouraging, as students' test scores and survey results indicate a 43% reduction in D or F grades compared to a section of the same course with the same instructor, using conventional delivery, and overwhelmingly positive responses from students regarding the effectiveness of pedagogical strategies (i.e., Exemplar Vignettes, content tutoring), assessment models (i.e., electronically delivered quizzes, flexible scheduling, use of testing center), and tutoring strategies (i.e., self-paced, exam results review). In this manuscript, the EPICS process, as well as results collected from student performance and perceptions of the initial implementation, will be addressed. © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.
