Feature selection is a very important procedure in the pattern recognition research field. Feature selection algorithms are particularly important in the inference of Gene Regulatory Networks (GRNs) from its gene expression profiles, which usually involves data with a large number of variables and small number of observations. This work presents the inference of GRNs from two different feature selection approaches: classical (deterministic) SFS and SFFS search algorithms, and (meta-heuristic) Discretized Differential Evolution (DDE) algorithm. Several Artificial Gene Networks (AGNs) were probabilistically generated for testing. They had different sizes and topologies following three models: Erdös-Rényi uniformly-random, Watts-Strogatz small-world, and Barabási-Albert scale-free. Results confirm that, as the number of candidate predicting genes increase, the performance of the compared methods decrease, revealing the exponential characteristic of the problem. Notwithstanding, for all network sizes and topologies studies, the DDE algorithm achieved better results than the other approaches, especially for GRNs with hubs.

Designed to Delay Tolerant Networks, the Cultural Greedy GrAnt (CGrAnt) routing protocol uses Ant Colony Optimization to represent the population space of a Cultural Algorithm. CGrAnt aims to improve the message forwarding by analyzing the network characteristics based on three distinct knowledge: Domain, History, and Situational. The Domain knowledge plays a central role in the CGrAnt operation as it provides a good balance between search space exploration (through the selection of new solutions) and exploitation (through the selection of previously found solutions). This work proposes alternative metrics to be used by the Domain knowledge of CGrAnt. Results show that the new proposed metrics increase the CGrAnt performance.

In this paper, we investigate secure transmission in untrusted amplify-and-forward half-duplex relaying networks with the help of cooperative jamming at the destination (CJD). Under the assumption of full channel state information (CSI), conventional CJD using self-interference cancellation at the destination is efficient when the untrusted relay has no capability to suppress the jamming signal. However, if the source and destination are equipped with a single antenna and the only untrusted relay is equipped with N multiple antennas, it can remove the jamming signal from the received signal by linear filters and the full multiplexing gain of relaying cannot be achievable with the conventional CJD due to the saturation of the secrecy rate at the high transmit power regime. We propose in this paper new CJD scheme where neither destination nor relay can acquire CSI of relay-destination link. Our proposed scheme utilizes zero-forcing cancelation based on known jamming signals instead of self-interference subtraction, while the untrusted relay cannot suppress the jamming signals due to the lack of CSI. We show that the secrecy rate of the proposed scheme can enjoy a half of multiplexing gain in half-duplex relaying while that of conventional CJD is saturated at high transmit power for N ≥2. The impact of channel estimation error at the destination is also investigated to show the robustness of the proposed scheme against strong estimation errors.

Compounds of Fe, Ti, and Sb were prepared using arc melting and vacuum annealing. Fe2TiSb, expected to be a full Heusler compound crystallizing in the L21 structure, was shown by XRD and SEM analyses to be composed of weakly magnetic grains of nominal composition Fe1.5TiSb with iron-rich precipitates in the grain boundaries. FeTiSb, a composition consistent with the formation of a half-Heusler compound, also decomposed into Fe1.5TiSb grains with Ti-Sb rich precipitates and was weakly magnetic. The dominant Fe1.5TiSb phase appears to crystallize in a defective L21-like structure with iron vacancies. Based on this finding, a first-principles DFT-based binary cluster expansion of Fe and vacancies on the Fe sublattice of the L21 structure was performed. Using the cluster expansion, we computationally scanned >103 configurations and predict a novel, stable, nonmagnetic semiconductor phase to be the zero-temperature ground state. This new structure is an ordered arrangement of Fe and vacancies, belonging to the space group R3m, with composition Fe1.5TiSb, i.e., between the full- and half-Heusler compositions. This phase can be visualized as alternate layers of L21 phase Fe2TiSb and C1b phase FeTiSb, with layering along the [111] direction of the original cubic phases. Our experimental results on annealed samples support this predicted ground-state composition, but further work is required to confirm that the R3m structure is the ground state.

Heterostructures like InAs/GaSb superlattices (SLs) are distinctly different from well-studied ones like GaAs/AlAs SLs in terms of band alignment, common interface atom, and phonon spectrum overlapping of the constituents, which manifests as stark differences in their electronic and vibrational properties. This paper reports a comprehensive examination of all four types of phonon modes (confined, quasiconfined, extended, and interface) that have long been predicted for the InAs/GaSb SL, with the observation and interpretation of a set of phonon modes by performing cleaved edge μ-Raman study with polarization analysis. Furthermore, we show a signature of symmetry reduction from D2d for GaAs/AlAs SL to C2v for InAs/GaSb SL revealed as a phonon-polariton effect.

The vibration in induction motors is due to mechanical and electrical forces existing during the motor operation. The vibration monitoring can help to prevent wear in motors, to increase its efficiency and lowering maintenance costs. Through knowledge and accurate diagnostic procedures, it is possible to detect the cause of the vibration. This paper presents the vibration measurement analysis in the induction motor running at no-load condition using a biaxial optical fiber accelerometer. The sensor is positioned on the induction motor, and the acquired data compared with the one from a capacitive sensor. Changing the power supply frequency from 10 to 60 Hz a higher SNR was observed for both directions on the optical sensor data. The characteristics of the optical sensor, immunity to electromagnetic interference and high sensitivity, 87.848 pm.g-1 and 92.351 pm.g-1 for two directions and independent directions, favors its use for monitoring vibrations in electrical machines. The results indicate a relation between deterioration and mechanical vibration and, thus, providing the motivation for additional study and a basis for future applications. © 2015 IEEE.

The feasibility of generating tomographic images of objects inside crude oil is investigated in this paper. Crude oil in the visible spectrum usually appears as black oil. Nevertheless, in the mid-infrared range, crude oil presents bands of high transmission. These windows of opportunities are explored to obtain data for generating cross-section images. In this paper, a first generation tomograph (containing one radiation source and one detector) is setup and applied to visualize objects inside a typical crude oil sample from a Brazilian reservoir. Reconstructed images based on standard filtered back-projection algorithm for phantom measurements show very promising results.

Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT Collaboration is evaluated for accuracy and consistency in producing a selection of test images, demonstrating that the various methods and implementations of radiative transfer calculations are highly consistent. When imaging an analytic accretion model, we find that all codes produce images similar within a pixel-wise normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of 0.012 in the worst case. When imaging a snapshot from a cell-based magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we find all test images to be similar within NMSEs of 0.02, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.12 in Stokes I, Q, U, and V, respectively. We additionally find the values of several image metrics relevant to published EHT results to be in agreement to much better precision than measurement uncertainties.

A critical juncture in the undergraduate STEM education pathway is the first two years of college when the majority of attrition occurs because students experience many academic challenges in gatekeeping courses. Among many factors to this failure, an important one is attributed to the lack of engaging pedagogy inside and outside classrooms. Through this NSF WIDER program sponsored planning project, a team of faculty and administrators at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU) are implementing evidence-based instructional practices in foundation courses in STEM curricula. Recognizing that it is essential to implement effective pedagogy in gateway courses where most attrition occurs, this project has conducted a pilot study, which focuses on: (1) collecting baseline data about the extent to which evidence-based practices are currently being used in STEM gateway courses;(2) redesigning three foundational gateway courses in electrical engineering, computer science and mathematics by applying evidence-based teaching strategies-student-centered problem-based teaching(SC-PBT), example-based teaching, and just-in-time teaching (JITT);(3) incorporating classroom and laboratory activities that require active student engagement, conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and problem-solving;and (4) Employing model students to lead Supplementary Instruction (SI) courses with evidence-based peer-to-peer learning strategies. The student assessment data indicated the effectiveness of the evidence-based instructional practices, the SI peer-to-peer learning strategies, as well as existing engagement challenges. In addition, positive feedback was obtained from the student survey data on the redesigned courses. The broader impact of this project is twofold. First, data generated through assessment and evaluation is expected to support the theoretical rationale that systematic change in STEM education must include a wide spectrum of stakeholders (administrators, facul
