In this paper, stochastic optimal control problems in continuous time and space are considered. In recent years, such problems have received renewed attention from the lens of reinforcement learning (RL) which is also one of our motivation. The main contribution is a simulation-based algorithm - dual ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) - to numerically approximate the solution of these problems. The paper extends our previous work where the dual EnKF was applied in deterministic settings of the problem. The theoretical results and algorithms are illustrated with numerical experiments. © 2024 IEEE.

In this work, a dynamic weighting-artificial neural network (DW-ANN) methodology is presented for quick and automated compact model (CM) generation. It takes advantage of both TCAD simulations for high accuracy and SPICE simulations for cost-effectiveness. This methodology is developed for gate-all-around (GAA) silicon (Si) nanosheet (NS) complementary field effect transistor (CFET), a potential candidate for future CMOS technology due to its innate properties. The critical process variation (PV) sources that severely degrade the CFET performance are estimated using DW-ANN. It reduces the computation cost and predicts the effects of PV sources with less than 1% error. Furthermore, a compact DW-ANN-based Verilog-A model has been developed that captures the dc as well as transient behavior accurately for circuit-level analysis. CFET-based circuits such as inverter, 6T-static random access memory (SRAM), and ring oscillator (RO) are characterized and implemented using DW-ANN-based CM. The overall average error of the model is reported as less than 2%. Therefore, the proposed device and circuit modeling approach provides a feasible solution for the rapid compact modeling of new emerging devices with good convergence and high accuracy. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Semantic Communication in Multi-team Dynamic Games: A Mean Field Perspective

Coordinating communication and control is a key component in the stability and performance of networked multi-agent systems. While single user networked control systems have gained a lot of attention within this domain, in this work, we address the more challenging problem of large population multi-team dynamic games. In particular, each team constitutes two decision makers (namely, the sensor and the controller) who coordinate over a shared network to control a dynamically evolving state of interest under costs on both actuation and sensing/communication. Due to the shared nature of the wireless channel, the overall cost of each team depends on other teams’ policies, thereby leading to a noncooperative game setup. Due to the presence of a large number of teams, we compute approximate decentralized Nash equilibrium policies for each team using the paradigm of (extended) mean-field games, which is governed by (1) the mean traffic flowing over the channel, and (2) the value of information at the sensor, which highlights the semantic nature of the ensuing communication. In the process, we compute optimal controller policies and approximately optimal sensor policies for each representative team of the mean-field system to alleviate the problem of general non-contractivity of the mean-field fixed point operator associated with the finite cardinality of the sensor action space. Consequently, we also prove the ǫ–Nash property of the mean-field equilibrium solution which essentially characterizes how well the solution derived using mean-field analysis performs on the finite-team system. Finally, we provide extensive numerical simulations, which corroborate the theoretical findings and lead to additional insights on the properties of the results presented. In our problem, we are given access to a number of sequences of nonnegative i.i.d. random variables, whose realizations are observed sequentially. All sequences are of the same finite length. The goal is to pick one element from each sequence in order to maximize a reward equal to the expected value of the sum of the selections from all sequences. The decision on which element to pick is irrevocable, i.e., rejected observations cannot be revisited. Furthermore, the procedure terminates upon having a single selection from each sequence. Our observation constraint is that we cannot observe the current realization of all sequences at each time instant. Instead, we can observe only a smaller, yet arbitrary, subset of them. Thus, together with a stopping rule that determines whether we choose or reject the sample, the solution requires a sampling rule that determines which sequence to observe at each instant. The problem can be solved via dynamic programming, but with an exponential complexity in the length of the sequences. In order to make the solution computationally tractable, we introduce a decoupling approach and determine each stopping time using either a single-sequence dynamic programming, or a Prophet Inequality inspired threshold method, with polynomial complexity in the length of the sequences. We prove that the decoupling approach guarantees at least 0.745 of the optimal expected reward of the joint problem. In addition, we describe how to efficiently compute the optimal number of samples for each sequence, and its' dependence on the variances.

Policy optimization has gained renewed attention from the control community, serving as a pivotal link between control theory and reinforcement learning. In the past few years, the global convergence theory of direct policy search on state-feedback linear control benchmarks has been developed. However, it remains difficult to establish the global convergence of policy optimization on the linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) problem, marked by the presence of suboptimal stationary points and the lack of cost coerciveness. In this paper, we revisit the policy optimization intricacies of LQG via a case study on first-order single-input single-output (SISO) systems. For this case study, while the issue related to suboptimal stationary points can be easily fixed via parameterizing the policy class more carefully, the non-coerciveness of the LQG cost function still poses a substantial obstacle to a straightforward global convergence proof for the policy gradient method. Our contribution, within the scope of this case study, introduces an approach to construct a positive invariant set for the policy gradient flow, addressing the non-coerciveness issue in the global convergence proof. Based on our analysis, the policy gradient flow can be guaranteed to converge to the globally optimal full-order dynamic controller in this particular scenario. In summary, although centered on a specific case study, our work broadens the comprehension of how the absence of coerciveness impacts LQG policy optimization, highlighting inherent complexities.

Stress tolerance plays a vital role in ensuring the effectiveness of piezoresistive sensing films used in flexible pressure ***,existing methods for enhancing stress tolerance employ dome-shaped,wrinkle-shaped,and pyramidal-shaped microstructures in intricate molding and demolding processes,which introduce significant fabrication challenges and limit the sensing *** address these shortcomings,this paper presents periodic microslits in a sensing film made of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and polydimethylsiloxane to realize ultrahigh stress tolerance with a theoretical maximum of 2.477 MPa and a sensitivity of 18.092 kPa−*** periodic microslits permit extensive deformation under high pressure(e.g.,400 kPa)to widen the detection ***,the periodic microslits also enhance the sensitivity based on simultaneously exhibiting multiple synapses within the sensing interface and between the periodic sensing *** proposed solution is verified by experiments using sensors based on the microslit strategy for wind direction detection,robot movement sensing,and human health *** these experiments,vehicle load detection is achieved for ultrahigh pressure sensing under an ultrahigh pressure of over 400 kPa and a ratio of the contact area to the total area of 32.74%.The results indicate that the proposed microslit strategy can achieve ultrahigh stress tolerance while simplifying the fabrication complexity of preparing microstructure sensing films.
