This paper studies the effects of peer influence and homophily on the diffusion of the iPhone 3G across a number of communities sampled from a large dataset from a major European Mobile carrier in one country. We use Stochastic Actor Based Models to capture the co-evolution of the social network as well as the dynamics of adoption. This helps to separate the roles of homophily and peer influence in the process of diffusion. We provide evidence that the propensity of a subscriber to adopt, when she is called upon to make a decision about whether she should adopt, increases with the number of friends that have already adopted. A one standard deviation increase above the mean in the number of friends that had already adopted increases the likelihood odds of adoption relative to no adoption by a factor of 2.8. The effect of peer influence is robust across a number of different specifications. The results for the effect of homophily are less clear. While, on average, we find a positive significant effect of adoption on tie formation, in many communities this effect is significant and negative and in others there is no effect at all.

This paper is motivated by the recognition that sources of uncertainties in the electric power systems are multifold and that they may have potentially far-reaching effects. In the past, only system load forecast was considered to be the main challenge. More recently, uncertain price of electricity and hard-to-predict power produced by the renewable resources, such as wind and solar, are making the operating and planning environment much more challenging. It is, therefore, becoming very important to develop modeling methods for predicting uncertain load and wind power, in particular. In this paper we first transform historic time-stamped data into their Fourier Transform (FT) representation. The frequency domain data representation is used to decompose the wind and load power signals and to derive predictive models relevant for short-term and long-term predictions. The short-term results are interpreted next as a Linear Prediction Coding Model (LPC) and its accuracy is analyzed. Next, the Discrete Markov Process (DMP) representation is applied to help assess probabilities of most likely short-, medium- and long-term states and the related multi-temporal risks. Throughout the paper we use publicly available data for the New York Control Area (NYCA).

This paper recognizes that the large resistance to reactance line ratio in distribution systems may create strong coupling between real and reactive power dynamics. To model this coupling, a new coupled real-power voltage dynamic model for future distribution energy systems with a large penetration of distributed generation (DG) units is derived. The proposed dynamic model offers an intuitive physical insight into the interaction between the electromechanical and electromagnetic phenomena. This model, furthermore, provides a better understanding of the decentralized nature of distribution energy systems where each DG represents a sub-system of the whole system. The theoretical findings are applied to investigate the small-signal stability of a real-world distribution system on the island of Flores. The results indicate that if the primary control of DGs are designed based on the decoupled model, frequency and voltage stability problems may occur in distribution systems.

Refactoring is a common approach to producing better quality software. Its impact on many software quality properties, including reusability, maintainability and performance, has been studied and measured extensively. However, its impact on the information security of programs has received relatively little attention. In this work, we assess the impact of a number of the most common code-level refactoring rules on data security, using security metrics that are capable of measuring security from the point view of potential information flow. The metrics are calculated for a given Java program using a static analysis tool we have developed to automatically analyse compiled Java bytecode. We ran our Java code analyser on various programs which were refactored according to each rule. New values of the metrics for the refactored programs then confirmed that the code changes had a measurable effect on information security. © WIAR 2012 - National Workshop on Information Assurance Research, Proceedings. This paper describes in detail our Security-Critical Program Analyser (SCPA). SCPA is used to assess the security of a given program based on its design or source code with regard to data flow-based metrics. Furthermore, it allows software developers to generate a UML-like class diagram of their program and annotate its confidential classes, methods and attributes. SCPA is also capable of producing Java source code for the generated design of a given program. This source code can then be compiled and the resulting Java bytecode program can be used by the tool to assess the program's overall security based on our security metrics. © WIAR 2012 - National Workshop on Information Assurance Research, Proceedings. Transportation networks are important public infrastructures because they enable economic and social activity. Trends in contracting the maintenance of such assets have caused a shift in governance from a public body to market-like arrangements and changed the roles and responsibilities among asset owner, asset manager and service providers. Basic assumption of this research is that collaboration between contractors in road infrastructure is needed and can be stimulated through facilitating joint coordination on a network level, based on a social costs incentive. Based on a literature review design components and possible techniques are identified. Then the concept design and testing methods for a dynamic network-based tool to facilitate strategic infrastructure asset management is proposed.

Revisiting web pages is common when using web browsers. Commercial browsers provide some revisitation tools for users, for example, back and forward buttons, bookmarks and history lists. However, these tools still have some limitations. In this paper, we presented the design and implementation of a novel thumbnail-based web revisitation tool (TRT). TRT employs enhanced thumbnail and treemaps for improving user experience. Comparing to the other graphical revisitation tools, TRT has three new features. First, TRT display thumbnails and titles in a panel, not a list box. Second, logo-enhanced thumbnails are used as an option by the user. Third, treemaps visualization method is used to change the layout of the panel. © 2012 IEEE.

Renewable energy penetration in electricity is expected to have a spectacular growth in the forthcoming years. Power systems and the codes of their operation will be modified to take into account the specific characteristics of variable renewable energy operation (wind energy, photovoltaics). A number of issues arise in the context of developing new generation expansion planning methodologies, under a large scale penetration of renewable energy. A probabilistic approach is necessary due to the strong stochastic nature of variable (non dispatchable) renewables incorporating the statistics of the customer load and the non dispatchable RES generation. The level of penetration of variable renewable energy has to be calculated according to restrictions implied by the energy curtailment which can occur when the customer load is low and RES generation is high. Hydro pumped storage plants decrease this curtailment and consequently increase the level of RES penetration. In addition, fast reserve capacity is required to deal with big variations of variable RES energy generation. In summary the necessary storage and reserve capacity has to be calculated and incorporated in the costs of different scenarios related to expansion planning or operation simulation. In addition, grid costs mainly related to the Transmission System Expansion have to be calculated since they are related to the penetration of areas with high RES potential. In the present paper an attempt is made to incorporate such costs in the TIMES model in order to have a more accurate approach of generation expansion scenarios, incorporating storage, reserve plants and Transmission System expansion in the cost of RES technologies. Using the results as an input, a more detailed probabilistic approach is used to calculate the relevant production costs under a wide-scale penetration of RES. Methodologies presented here are based on the so called residual load duration curves approach. © 2012 IEEE.

When asking users to enter credentials, today's desktop operating systems often use windows that provide scant evidence that a trusted path has been established;evidence that would allow a user to know that a request is genuine and that the password will not be read by untrusted principals. We measure the efficacy of web-based attacks that spoof these operating system credential-entry windows to steal users' device-login passwords. We recruited 504 users of Amazon's Mechanical Turk to evaluate a series of games on third-party websites. The third such website indicated that it needed to install software from the publisher that provided the participants' operating system: Microsoft's Silverlight for Windows Vista/7 users and Apple's QuickTime for Mac OS users. The website then displayed a spoofed replica of a window the participant's client operating system would use to request a user's device credentials. In our most effective attacks, over 20% of participants entered passwords that they later admitted were the genuine credentials used to login to their devices. Even among those who declined to enter their credentials, many participants were oblivious to the spoofing attack. Participants were more likely to confirm that they were worried about the consequences of installing software from a legitimate source than to report that they thought the credential-entry window might have appeared as a result of an attempt to steal their password.
