We propose a novel and practical transmission strategy for decode-and-forward MIMO relay channels operating in half-duplex mode that is based on precoding with time, power, and spatial stream allocation. In the proposed scheme, the message from the source is divided into two parts and sent to the destination, one part directly and the other with the help of the relay. We formulate the problem of finding the rate-maximizing precoding matrices and resource allocation and then transform it into a convex form by employing the proposed suboptimal but simplifying precoding structure and performing other manipulations. The numerical results show that the achievable rate of the proposed scheme is close to a well-known theoretical lower bound and even outperforms it in certain scenarios, despite our transmission strategy being based on a much simpler coding scheme. Additionally, the proposed scheme is able to outperform another scheme based on repetition coding with fixed time slot duration.

Pulsatile changes in retinal vascular geometry over the cardiac cycle have clinical implication for diagnosis of ocular and systemic vascular diseases. In this study, we report a Vesselness Mapping of Retinal Image Sequence (VMRS) methodology to visualize the vessel pulsation and quantify the pulsatile motions in the cardiac cycle. Retinal images were recorded in an image sequence corresponding to 8 segments of the cardiac cycle using a nonmydriatic fundus camera (Canon CR45, Canon Inc., Japan) modified with ECG-synchronization. Individual cross-sectional vessel diameters were measured separately and the significance of the variations was tested statistically by repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). The graders observed an improved quality of vessel pulsation on a wide region around the optic disk using the VMRS. Individual cross- sectional vessel diameter measurement after visualization of pulsatile motions resulted in the detection of more significant diameter change for both arterioles (3.3 μm, P = 0.001) and venules (6.6 μm, P < 0.001) compared to individual measurement without visualization of the pulsatile motions (all P values > 0.05), showing an increase of 2.1 μm and 4.7 μm for arterioles and venules, respectively.

Smart Grid refers to the modernization of the electric grid through the integration of advanced technologies with an intelligent information infrastructure to offer numerous benefits to both electricity providers and consumers. The Kentucky public Service Commission, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Louisville have partnered to develop a technical roadmap for the development and deployment of Smart Grid technology throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In this paper, objectives of the Initiative and the work plan will be introduced, and key technology areas along with applicable infrastructure areas will be identified. An assessment model for the evaluation of Smart Grid technologies and functionalities will be created, followed by evaluation reports on each infrastructure area, based on which the final Kentucky Smart Grid Roadmap report will be developed to provide recommendations and best practices to utilities and stakeholders to guide individual grid modernization approaches. © 2012 IEEE.

A location-based service oriented application is presented in this paper, able to extract DBpedia data relevant to user's preferences and geographic position. Google Latitude technology is used to locate the user, while SPARQL API is exploited to query the DBpedia dataset according to user's interests. The resulting RDF graphs are serialized to JSON format and visualized within Google Maps. © 2012 IEEE.

A ray-tracing technique to predict the propagation channel parameters in indoor scenarios is presented. An analysis of the physical radio channel propagation inside a van full of buckets is presented. The propagation model is a deterministic technique, based on 3D ray launching. The results show the dependence of the scenario in the performance of the system, revealing that the consideration of the topology of the wireless system prior to deployment leads to an optimal final configuration.

Interference modeling is central to the analysis of many interference limited systems. The aggregate interference due to many individual interferers is often very difficult to characterize exactly, especially when lognormal shadowing and path loss is considered. Some results are available for homogeneous sources where the individual components have the same distribution, but many more detailed studies involve heterogeneous sources. Hence, in this paper we build upon previous models for homogeneous sources to develop three general purpose approaches to modeling the aggregate interference from heterogeneous sources which include both shadowing and path-loss. These models are the inverse gamma, inverse generalized gamma and extreme value distributions. These models are motivated by prior work as well as by three distinct interference scenarios relating to cognitive radio systems, digital television and femtocells. The models are fitted to these wide ranging examples and numerical results show good agreement, both for interference and SINR distributions.
