A location-based service oriented application is presented in this paper, able to extract DBpedia data relevant to user's preferences and geographic position. Google Latitude technology is used to locate the user, while SPARQL API is exploited to query the DBpedia dataset according to user's interests. The resulting RDF graphs are serialized to JSON format and visualized within Google Maps.

computer experiments have become increasingly important in several different industries. These experiments save resources by exploring different designs without necessitating real hardware manufacturing. However, computer experiments usually require lengthy simulation times and powerful computational capacity. Therefore, it is often pragmatically impossible to run experiments on a complete design space. In this paper, we propose an adaptive sampling scheme that interactively works with predictive models to sequentially select design points for computer experiments. The selected samples are used to build predictive models, which in turn guide further sampling and predict the entire design space. For illustration, we use Bayesian additive regression trees (BART), multiple additive regression trees (MART), treed Gaussian process and Gaussian process to guide the proposed sampling method. Both real data and simulation studies show that our sampling method is effective in that (i) it can be used with different predictive models;(ii) it can select multiple design points without repeatedly refitting the predictive models, which makes parallel simulations possible and (iii) the predictive model built on its generated samples gives more accurate predictions on the unsampled points than the models built on samples from other methods such as random sampling, space-filling designs and some adaptive sampling methods. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Poor diet is one of the key determinants of an individual's risk of developing chronic diseases. Assessing what people eat is fundamental to establishing the link between diet and disease. Food records are considered the best approach for assessing energy intake however paper-based food recording is cumbersome and often inaccurate. Researchers have begun to explore how mobile devices can be used to reduce the burden of recording nutritional intake. The integrated camera in a mobile phone can be used for capturing images of food consumed. These images are then processed to automatically identify the food items for record keeping purposes. In such systems, the accurate classification of food items in these images is vital to the success of such a system. In this paper we will present a new method for generating texture features from food images and demonstrate that this new feature provides greater food classification accuracy for a mobile phone based dietary assessment system.

Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) and Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) have great potential for stabilizing response of the power grid to the large disturbances. A combination of both technologies can result in very powerful near-real time sensing and control capable of monitoring and counteracting the effects of very fast disturbances. In this paper we propose fast switching of FACTS devices which is guaranteed to transiently stabilize the system using very fast and accurate PMU measurements. The nonlinear control law proposed in this paper is based and designed upon understanding the physical system-wide effects of a fault. The control law can be interpreted in terms of controling stored energy flow dynamics and it is also derived using energy-based high gain control methods for nonlinear systems. As such, it is entirely scalable and applicable to any size system. The location of PMUs and the design of systemwide communications for given locations of FACTS devices is directly determined using the designed control law. FACTS control of this type would not be possible without having the accuracy and sampling rate of PMUs. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper considers the placement of synchronized Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in power systems to improve state estimation results. Since currently the number of PMUs deployed in the power system is far away from being sufficient achieve full system observability, one has to install the PMUs on a carefully selected subset of buses, such that the state estimation error is minimized. In this paper, we formulate the optimal PMU placement problem as an optimal experiment design problem, with a class of well-known optimality criteria, which are studied in the statistics literature. Since it has been shown that the optimal experiment design is NP-hard, we consider efficient suboptimal PMU placement algorithms. In particular, we show that the design criteria are usually related to a key property, submodularity, which often allows a greedy algorithm to achieve good approximation ratio. Specifically, we show that for typical power systems, a greedy PMU placement algorithm achieves at least 63% of the optimal reduction in total variance. The performance of the greedy PMU placement algorithms are further verified by simulation results.

Statistical properties of avalanches in networks

We characterize the distributions of size and duration of avalanches propagating in complex networks. By an avalanche we mean the sequence of events initiated by the externally stimulated excitation of a network node, which may, with some probability, then stimulate subsequent excitations of the nodes to which it is connected, resulting in a cascade of excitations. This type of process is relevant to a wide variety of situations, including neuroscience, cascading failures on electrical power grids, and epidemiology. We find that the statistics of avalanches can be characterized in terms of the largest eigenvalue and corresponding eigenvector of an appropriate adjacency matrix that encodes the structure of the network. By using mean-field analyses, previous studies of avalanches in networks have not considered the effect of network structure on the distribution of size and duration of avalanches. Our results apply to individual networks (rather than network ensembles) and provide expressions for the distributions of size and duration of avalanches starting at particular nodes in the network. These findings might find application in the analysis of branching processes in networks, such as cascading power grid failures and critical brain dynamics. In particular, our results show that some experimental signatures of critical brain dynamics (i.e., power-law distributions of size and duration of neuronal avalanches) are robust to complex underlying network topologies.

Transmission congestion is a major economic and reliability concern in today's electric power systems. However, as the industry undergoes changes, it becomes critically important to better understand the fundamental role of transmission and its technical and financial effects on the electricity provision. Thermal limits, voltage drop regulation, and voltage stability limits are among the most common causes of transmission congestion. In order to relieve congestion, new transmission can be built or reactive power control can be installed. In this paper, simple power systems are analyzed in order to compare costs of different ways of reducing congestion. The length of a transmission line determines the cause and the most cost effective solution. For short lines, the thermal limit is the limiting factor in determining the maximum power flow and building new transmission is the only effective solution. For longer lines, the voltage drop regulation is the limiting factor and adding a shunt capacitor is the most cost effective solution. © 2011 IEEE.

In order to approach human hand performance levels, artificial anthropomorphic hands/fingers have increasingly incorporated human biomechanical features. However, the performance of finger reaching movements to visual targets involving the complex kinematics of multijointed, anthropomorphic actuators is a difficult problem. This is because the relationship between sensory and motor coordinates is highly nonlinear, and also often includes mechanical coupling of the two last joints. Recently, we developed a cortical model that learns the inverse kinematics of a simulated anthropomorphic finger. Here, we expand this previous work by assessing if this cortical model is able to learn the inverse kinematics for an actual anthropomorphic humanoid finger having its two last joints coupled and controlled by pneumatic muscles. The findings revealed that single 3D reaching movements, as well as more complex patterns of motion of the humanoid finger, were accurately and robustly performed by this cortical model while producing kinematics comparable to those of humans. This work contributes to the development of a bioinspired controller providing adaptive, robust and flexible control of dexterous robotic and prosthetic hands.

In this paper, fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) was covalently bonded with magnetic single-walled carbon nanotubes (mSWCNTs) that were purified using our previous method. To demonstrate our design, mSWCNT-FITC was delivered into plant cells (canola and carrot cells) driven by external magnetic forces. From FACS results, the FITC delivery efficiency was about 100% for both two canola and carrot protoplasts, which were further confirmed by the confocal and sectional TEM images. Some mSWCNTs were found trapped both inside the endosomes of canola protoplast and outside endosome near the nuclear membrane of carrot protoplast according to the sectional TEM images. All results showed that mSWCNT is a good delivery carrier for biomolecules. Copyright © 2012 American Scientific Publishers.
