During the last decades there has been a continuous growth of wind power generation. This trend, especially in Greek islands, where wind potential is high, raises the issue of acceptable penetration levels of wind generation especially in autonomous systems. This work is part of a research program between PPC S.A. -of Greece and NTUA. The method is applied to two islands, Crete and Rhodes, where wind power penetration is expected to be increased within the next years. The power grid of each island is modeled and speed governors, automatic voltage regulators of conventional plants, as well as wind turbines are modeled in detail. Case studies are formed and simulation results are produced, discussed and eventually the penetration levels are determined, together with proposed measures to increase them.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been widely applied to identify informative SNPs associated with common and complex diseases. Besides single-SNP analysis, the interaction between SNPs is believed to play an important role in disease risk due to the complex networking of genetic regulations. While many approaches have been proposed for detecting SNP interactions, the relative performance and merits of these methods in practice are largely unclear. In this paper, a ground-truth based comparative study is reported involving 9 popular SNP detection methods using realistic simulation datasets. The results provide general characteristics and guidelines on these methods that may be informative to the biological investigators.

A novel class AB second-generation CMOS current conveyor (CCII) is presented. Class AB operation is achieved without increasing supply voltage requirements or power consumption. The circuit also features very low input resistance at terminal X. The CCII has been fabricated in a 0.5-mum CMOS technology. Measurement results using a dual supply voltage of plusmn1.65 V show a THD of -60 dB at 120 kHz in current follower configuration, for input and output currents 20 times larger than the bias current. The quiescent power of this configuration is 99 muW and the silicon area is 0.02 mm 2 .

In this paper, an analytical solution is obtained for the design of Electromagnetic Bandgap (EBG) structures that feature a single stopband without the spurious rejected bands present in the conventional EBG devices at the harmonics of the design frequency. The design technique is applied to a two-port microstrip EBG circuit and to a four-port coupled-line EBG device in stripline technology obtaining very good results. The implementation of the EBG structure in coupled-lines allows for the redirection of the reflected signal to the coupled-port producing a device with input port matched at all frequencies.

Various speech disorders or language impairments can affect the whole life of a person. Discovered and treated in time, they can be corrected, most often in childhood. The use of information technology in order to assist and supervise speech disorder therapy allows specialists to collect a considerable volume of data about the personal or familial anamnesis, regarding various disorders or regarding the process of personalized therapy. These data can be the foundation of data mining processes that show interesting information for the design and adaptation of different therapies in order to obtain the best results in conditions of maximum efficiency. The aim of this paper is to make a short analyze of the use opportunity of the data mining techniques in order to improve the personalized therapy of speech disorders framework. We also present Logo-DM, a data mining system designed to be associated with TERAPERS system in order to provide information based on which one could improve the process of personalized therapy.

Older adults are overrepresented in fatal crashes on a per mile *** with useful field of view(UFOV) reductions show particularly elevated crash *** evaluate cross-modal alerting parameters for orienting to external targets in attention impaired drivers,we applied a variation of Posner's orienting of attention ***-nine older drivers with UFOV impairments and 32 older drivers without impairments *** were presented in either a single modality or a combination of modalities(visual,auditory,haptic).Four cue types(valid,invalid,neutral,uncued) were *** each cue,drivers discriminated the direction of a target(a Landolt square with a gap facing up or down) in the visual *** with and without UFOV impairments showed comparable response times(RTs) across the different cue types and alert *** groups benefited most from auditory and auditory/haptic ***,drivers responded faster when *** results suggest that temporal aspects of cue presentation dominate spatial aspects of cues in their ability to speed responses to external *** combination of a cognitive science approach in a driving simulator environment provides a fruitful method for examining how different alerts influence speed of processing and attention in at risk drivers in actual automobiles.

With the increasing application of distributed energy resources and information technologies in the electricity infrastructure, innovative possibilities for incorporating the demand side more actively in power system operation are enabled. At the residential level energy costs could be reduced with intelligent price-based control concepts (demand response). A promising, controllable, residential distributed generation technology is micro cogeneration (micro-CHP). Micro-CHP is an energy efficient technology that simultaneously provides heat and electricity to households during operation. This paper presents a detailed model of a household using a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) micro-CHP system in conjunction with heat storage options to fulfil its heat and part of its electricity demand. Furthermore, a decentralised controller based on a model predictive control (MPC) strategy is proposed. MPC can take benefit of future knowledge on prizes and energy demands and can therefore lead to better system performance. In simulations the performance of the MPC-controlled PEMFC system is illustrated under different conditions regarding energy pricing, domestic energy demand, and system configuration.

The storage and retrieval of digital ECGs in a standard-compliant way has been a key issue during the last decades. The SCP-ECG standard, one of the top efforts in this area, has been recently approved as part of the ISO/IEEE 11073 (x73) family of standards, a reference standard for medical device interoperability. For the Personal Health Device (PHD) version of the x73 standard several devices have been defined, but an ECG device specialization is not yet available. In this paper, the relationships between the SCP-ECG fields and messages and the particular way of the x73-PHD standard to deal with stored data are investigated and discussed. A proof-of-concept implementation of the x73-PHD storage and retrieval method applied to ECGs is also presented, identifying open issues and potential modifications to be considered for the wider interoperability adoption of x73-PHD standards.

This paper explores a general synthesis technique previously developed by the authors for designing microwave devices with fully customized temporal/spectral responses and its communications. The theoretical foundations of the exact analytical series solution for the synthesis technique enables the passivity and stability. A simple and efficient implementation of the synthesis algorithm is also presented. Finally, we demonstrate the application of the microwave synthesis technique for UWB applications: key components for the generation and optimal demonstrated. In particular, an UWB pulse-shaper and a matched-filter are experimentally demonstrated in conventional microstrip technology.

Electronic health record (EHR) systems and health information technology (IT) hold unrealized potential for improving the quality, continuity, and safety of medical care;they can also introduce new gaps in care and present unique challenges for healthcare workers. We conducted 14 key informant, semi-structured interviews at a large Veterans Affairs Medical Center and asked healthcare employees why paper use persists despite a fully implemented EHR. In this investigation, we performed a secondary analysis on interview data to identify characteristics of information technology (IT) that are important to support healthcare workflow. As a result of this study, 17 distinct information characteristics emerged;in this document, we provide detail on five characteristics that were often cited as desirable for workflow but insufficiently supported by health IT: 1) customizable, 2) prioritized, 3) trendable, 4) locatable, and 5) accessible. Results from this study reveal key electronic information characteristics for healthcare workflow and have implications for patient safety and future health IT designs.
