This paper describes the application of the quasi-floating gate technique to overcome the common mode sensitivity of the degeneration MOS resistors, which results in a significant linearity improvement and an enhanced CMRR. The proposed approach requires minimal additional hardware, does not require increased supply voltages or additional quiescent power dissipation and preserves the possibility of tuning the MOS resistor value through small gate voltage variations. Results from two different linearized MOS source degeneration schemes implemented in a 0.5(mu)m CMOS technology verify the feasibility of the presented solution.

In this paper we conjecture that revolutionary advances in future energy services are needed and that these are only possible by means of information technology (IT). To support this claim, we first briefly describe the fundamental needs for changing the ways energy services have been provided, and possible consequences resulting from not adopting qualitatively new paradigms. We next make the case why managing energy services of the future to meet such needs will only be possible when pursuing a systematic deployment of IT-based mechanisms for processing, delivering and consuming energy. We stress open R&D questions to which basic answers are needed in order to rip benefits of IT. Notably, a multi-disciplinary approach to modeling and simulating a cyber-physical system (CPS) comprising the physical energy grids, and its support communications, sensing, and computing cyber layers is essential. Designing regulatory policies for facilitating penetration of IT at the value is also viewed as one of the key R&D challenges. Finally, we introduce our vision of an IT-framework in support of dynamic energy control protocols (DECPs) and illustrate potential benefits from implementing DECPs.

Direct Search (DS) methods are evolutionary algorithms used to solve constrained optimization problems. DS methods do not require information about the gradient of the objective function while searching for an optimum solution. One of such methods is Pattern Search (PS) algorithm. This study examines the usefulness of a constrained pattern search algorithm to solve well-known power system Economic Load Dispatch problem (ELD) with a valve-point effect. For illustrative purposes, the proposed PS technique has been applied to various test systems to validate its effectiveness. Furthermore, convergence characteristics and robustness of the proposed method have been assessed and investigated through comparison with results reported in literature. The outcome is very encouraging and suggests that pattern search (PS) may be very useful in solving power system economic load dispatch problems.

An integrated microfluidic system for combined manipulation, pre-concentration, and lysis of samples containing Bordetella pertussis by dielectrophoresis and electroporation has been developed and implemented. The microfluidic device was able to pre-concentrate the amount of B. pertussis cells present in 200μl of a B. pertussis suspension stock into a 20μl volume. The device exhibited optimal sample pre-concentration of 6.7× at a stock value of 10{sup}3cfu/ml and at a flow rate of 250μl/h. Electro-disruption experiments showed that on-chip-based electroporation is an effective solution for lysis of B. pertussis cells that is easily integrated with dielectrophoresis assisted pre-concentration procedures. Pulsed voltage applied, number of pulses, and presence of potassium chloride in a B. pertussis suspension showed a reduction in B. pertussis cell viability by electroporation;and transmission electron microscopy confirmed B. pertussis cell disruption by electroporation. Genetic amplification and detection of the pre-concentrated sample employing an integrated chip-based system demonstrated a complete chip approach for pathogen detection.

This paper describes a procedure of identifying sensor faults and reconstructing the erroneous measurements. Data mining algorithms are successfully applied for deriving models that estimate the value of one variable based on correlated others. The estimated values can then be used instead of the recorded ones of a measuring instrument with false reading. The aim is to reassure the correctness of data entered to an optimization software application under development for the Thermal Power Plants of Western Macedonia, Greece.

One policy aim under electric-industry restructuring has been to replace the centralized utility planning process (integrated resource planning) with regional planning for network investments, and decentralized decision-making for merchant investments. Through specific policies such as encouraging market-based merchant transmission and the proposed establishment of National Interest Transmission Corridors under the Energy policy Act of 2005, congestion and reliability have been treated as separable and independent system attributes. This paper brings together separate pieces of research in (S. Blumsack et al., 2006) to explore the proposition that transmission investments can be divided into those which relieve congestion and those which enhance system reliability. Using the DC power flow model with linear ATC, we derive some explicit necessary and sufficient analytical conditions under which the separability and independence assumptions hold. These include (i) the network is series-parallel; (ii) demand is completely price- inelastic; (iii) all customers value reliability identically; and (iv) the grid operator does not discriminate among customers when forced to physically ration consumption. Simulations using the IEEE 118-bus test system are presented which demonstrate the close dependence of reliability and congestion, except at very low levels of demand.

The new approach explicity defines a family of curves that allow the user to significantly reduce the computational effort and improves the accuracy of the design. This paper introduces an analytical formulation to describe QFT templates based on Fourier series. This allows to calculate the template contour of plants with a high number of uncertain parameters. The proposed solution consists of performing operations between analytical sub-templates. This saves calculation time and allows to work with an infinite set of plant values.
