Distributed simulation is used very little in industry, especially when compared with the interest in distributed simulation from research and from the military domain. In order to answer the question why industry lags behind, the authors have carried out an extensive survey, using a questionnaire and interviews, with users, vendors, and developers of distributed simulation products, as well as with vendors of non-distributed simulation software. Based on the results the discrepancies between the different "worlds" become clear enough to enable the formulation of clear guidelines for further developments of standards for distributed simulation. This paper reports on the first part of the survey, namely a questionnaire targeted at vendors of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) simulation packages. Analysis of the answers obtained establish that it is indeed the case that industry is relatively underdeveloped in the area of distributed simulation and also sheds some light on the reasons behind this

The advances in mobile technology, such as ultra wideband (UWB), enable the usage of advanced applications in the process industry. The main challenge in the first phase of designing UWB networks and applications is getting to know what the potential customer, e.g. process industry, wants. In this paper we present how to apply a user requirements elicitation process to get information about the expectation from the process industry regarding wireless networks and more specifically ultra wideband. This paper describes the design process of the balanced decisions that have to be made regarding applications as demanded by the process industry, and the technology as offered by the ICT industry. The outcome of this feasibility study leads to the decision for going on with the next step, i.e. the design and implementation of UWB applications in an industrial plant

European countries face significant challenges in crossing international, cultural, and social borders building the common space for higher education. The key in this process, to promote the mobility of the students is the implantation of the European credit transfer system (ECTS). The Spanish universities have begun their process of adaptation of unequal way, with the obligation, in any case, to adapt to the system of credits established in its normative prior to 2010. It is at the present moment, with its forced implementation, when universities require knowing the best practices of adaptation. Some universities have begun with some experiences but all of them look for references of how to do it. This task is not trivial. The objectives for the WIP here presented are to establish a description model of experiences of adaptation on credits ECTS that allows the comparison of all of them and to compile and organize experiences. Later, it will be developed a Web site to disseminate the best experiences

In December 2004, the Pressure Pipe Inspection Company (PPIC) conducted a nondestructive evaluation of the Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP) portion of the Bay Division Pipeline No. 4 for the San Francisco public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) using its patented Remote Field Eddy Current/Transformer Coupling (RFEC/TC) Technology. The RFEC/TC inspection was conducted over an overall distance of approximately 8.2 miles (13.12 km) and spanned a total of 2,167 inspected pipes. Several sections of the pipeline had a large number of reported wire breaks. After consulting Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. (SGH) regarding the probability of pipe failure, SFPUC proceeded to conduct a simple verification of four pipe sections before making any decisions regarding repairs or replacement. The field verification exercise grew in magnitude as a series of successively more invasive tests failed to verify PPIC's results. Two new test procedures;X-Ray and turn-to-turn resistance measurements were attempted with mixed results. After these tests were complete, SFPUC, on the advice of SGH proceeded to put the pipeline back into service with no repairs. The details surrounding the unusual and unexpected results of the SFPUC verification using accepted practices and two new technologies are of interest to owners and operators of PCCP pipelines as well as their consulting engineers since they threaten to undermine confidence in the RFEC/TC in general. A compact novel input offset compensation scheme with reduced sensitivity to charge injection and leakage is introduced. It stores an amplified version of the offset that is applied during normal operation on the input side through a capacitive divider. Offset compensation takes place in a voltage additive manner in a separate path from the input signal. Experimental results of a MOSIS test chip fabricated in 0.5μm AMI CMOS technology are shown that validate the proposed scheme.

This paper concerns the problem of capacity expansion and investment as the electric power industry undergoes major restructuring worldwide. In particular, the objectives of investment in fully regulated industry are compared with the capacity expansion in a spot only market. It is concluded that the incentives in spot only markets depend on the rules for bidding functions into the market: If only short-run marginal cost bidding curves are allowed, and no margin on forecast demand is added, basically no new investment will take place. On the other hand, if it is allowed to bid average costs, instead of short-run marginal costs, this would provide sufficiently strong incentive signals to ensure necessary installed capacity. Given that today's measurements of market power in the spot market classify any bids higher than the short-run marginal cost as market power, we suggest that it is essential to introduce other means of providing incentives to install capacity in a timely manner. This can be done by designing longer-term physical and/or financial mechanisms for valuing future investments. In this paper we propose a Stratum Electricity Market (SEM) structure which consists of several sequentially clearing submarkets, ranging from a day-ahead-market (DAM), through month-, season-, year-, five year- and even ten year-forward submarkets. The performance of this newly proposed SEM is illustrated using simulations on a simple power system in which four different types of generation technologies supply system load.

computer trustworthiness continues to increase in importance as a pressing scientific, economic, and social problem. In today's environment, there is heightened awareness of the threat of well-funded professional cyber hackers and the potential for nation-state sponsored cyber warfare. An accelerating trend of the last decade has been the growing integration role of computing and communication in critical infrastructure systems that now have complex interdependencies rooted in information technologies. These overlapping and interacting trends force us to recognize that trustworthiness of our computer systems is not an IT issue any more; it has a direct and immediate impact on our critical infrastructure. Security is often a collective enterprise, with complicated interdependencies and composition issues among a variety of participants. This poses a challenge for traditional engineering education models and curricula. The panel will discuss experiences and strategies to establish curricular foundation elements providing CSET graduates with an understanding of the interaction between cyber security, critical infrastructure systems and public policy

We study the application of distributed, autonomous agents for shortening such sequences. Each agent controls a single variable-the consumption of a load or the output of a generator. Each agent uses model predictive control and cooperates with its neighbors in making its decisions. Experiments using the IEEE 118 bus test case illustrate the effectiveness of this method.
