Context awareness is emphasized in order to provide automatic services in smart home. This paper uses case based reasoning as the reasoning method which solves the problem "in the first phase, we don't know exactly about the key processes and their interdependencies in smart home's context". The context's contents in smart home are described in this paper. Also, case representation, case storage and similarity calculation are discussed in smart home's context awareness. We propose a framework of context aware based on CBR, and discuss the case adaptation in detail.

This paper investigates the improvement on measurement sensitivity of the electro-optic modulator based PD continuous online monitoring technique, which has been developed by the authors. The characteristics of the measurement system noise were investigated in both the time and frequency domain. Various broadband amplifiers and filters have been applied. The feasibility of using RF transformers as passive amplifiers to increase the signal to noise ratio was also investigated.

A simple and very high speed approach for waveform generation is introduced. The VCO is very compact and versatile. It generates triangle and square waveforms. The VCO has a very wide range of oscillating frequencies (from fractions of Hz to 100MHz in 0.5mum CMOS technology). The amplitude of the oscillations can be very precisely controlled. Simulation results are shown that verify the characteristics of the proposed VCO

We will argue in this paper that the nature and magnitude of model uncertainty dictate the appropriateness of the control system design methodology. To obtain these arguments, we will pursue optimality of the control system design. Note this is a philosophical paper, in which we present our arguments in qualitative terms. We will identify the circumstances under which several control system design methodologies are appropriate. The design methodologies that will be considered are (1) optimal control and optimal feedback design, (2) model predictive control (receding horizon control), (3) active and passive adaptive control and (4) robust control. Robust control strategies are conservative and limit the possible improvements that can be obtained over say classical PID control. However, it will turn out that for certain types of control problems, improvements in performance are indeed limited. Roughly speaking, the area where we may expect (significant) improvement from advanced (optimal) control system design is very much limited by the uncertainty of the systems model. Miracles are not to be expected from advanced control. What can be expected is reflected in an active adaptive optimal control scheme introduced and discussed in this paper. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.

The development of wireless communication technology creates a mobile hospital that provides "e-link" between patients and medical personnel 24 hours a day and seven days a week. In this way, mobile hospital can provide a continuous and comprehensive healthcare for anybody, in any time and anywhere. Such communication pathway is capable and reliable not only in handing large amount of medical data such as vital signs or cardiac rhythm but also in transmitting voice, picture, and video in real time. Based on the information received, medical personnel could make necessary medical decisions and provide care instructions to the patient or the on-site care providers remotely and cost effectively.

In this paper the author suggests that many of the challenges presented are direct result of the institutional dichotomy within the once vertically integrated industry. Namely, while the generation portion of this industry has made major progress toward becoming for profit, value-based industry, both the delivery (transmission) and the end user (distribution) remainders are left without any clear institutional support to adjust and provide their value to the end users in the changing industry. Moreover, since the efficient and reliable operation of the electric power grid is very complex, the engineers have relied heavily over the past 20-30 years on on-line system monitoring (including state estimation), and computer methods for decision-making and system automation. These tools are difficult to develop and use for supporting efficient generation, delivery and consumption without bringing the system closer to the limits of what is possible. The lack of real economic incentives to push the system operations to its limits for efficiency reasons combined with the complexities and risks of operating close to the system stability margins has resulted in the predictable situation the industry is currently facing. Also, the she suggested that in order to move forward and provide some more natural ways of valuing generation, transmission, distribution and customers' willingness to respond to the changing system constraints, several issues must be solved. In this presentation we introduce some possible institutional and technological approaches to solving the system reliability problems in the changing industry.

Recent events have increasingly focused public attention on issues of information privacy, computer and network security, cybercrime and cyber terrorism. Yet despite all of this attention, there is some confusion about what is actually encompassed by those terms. There are some obvious components, such as cryptography and access control. However, the list of undisputed topics is not long or well-developed, and many questions arise as to whether a typical computer science department can offer all of the topics involved. That there are only a few universities that teach a comprehensive curriculum in these topics serves to illustrate the imprecise nature of the field. Many professionals have taken to describing it as "information security" or "information assurance" to distinguish that the focus is not on computers and networks, but on the information they hold and process. This talk will present a more comprehensive view of the area than simply within the confines of CS/CE. The speaker has been teaching information security for nearly 20 years and has developed a view that spans many traditional disciplines. The talk will present some of the reasons for that breadth of view, illustrated with examples taken from the recent CRA Grand Challenges Conference on Information Security. One conclusion from this talk is that getting good information security education widely implemented may not be simple, given current constraints and traditions within academia.

Electric, water, gas and transportation utilities face severe challenges associated with security, quality, availability, reliability and profitability issues. They must solve interrelated system problems with respect to generation of electricity, transportation of fuel, and potable as well as waste water. In the future, engineers and managers of utilities must be well versed in the different disciplines of engineering including electrical civil, mechanical and information technology. The University of Colorado at Boulder addresses this educational opportunity by proposing a novel Integrated Utilities Management Program for M.S. candidates who have a solid B.S. background or equivalent in a related discipline. The M.S. program will consist of four interdisciplinary paths dealing with business management and legal topics as they relate to federal and state regulatory issues, as well as agency and people-related leadership issues. The electric utilities option of this program will be centered on three core courses related to electric power generation/transmission and distribution, security and availability, quality and reliability, economics and environmental policy, and utility finance;two elective courses from a group of courses that address nuclear power, waste water, solid waste, telecommunications, renewable energies, data communication, fuels and case studies;and one capstone course consisting of either operations research or the investigation and resolution of a pending utility project such as the right-of-way of transmission lines, specification of new power plants, retrofitting of power plants or their impact on the environment. It is expected that candidates for this MS Program will come from universities, from utilities, and from private and public agencies. The MS program can be completed by full- or part time students within one or two years of intensive study, respectively. A new low-voltage CMOS class AB OTA with rail to rail input/output swing, low supply voltage and very high slew rate is presented. The scheme is based on a combination of floating gate transistors, local common-mode feedback and class AB input The proposed OTA does not suffer from typical reliability problems related with initial charge trapped in the floating gates devices. Simulation and experimental in 0.5μm CMOS technology verify the scheme operating with 1V dual supply and 1.9Vp-p input and output swing. © 2004 IEEE.
