A method for detecting surface defects of car seats based on improved YOLOv5 is proposed to address the current issues of low efficiency, high missed detection rate, and difficult cost control in manual inspection of surface defects of car seats. In addition, in order to solve the imbalance problem of various defect images collected by industrial cameras, the methods of translation, cropping and adding noise are used to pre-enhance the images. Train the manually annotated dataset using an improved Yolov5 model, which uses K-means++ clustering anchor boxes to enhance adaptability to the dataset in this paper. At the same time, add a BiFormer module to the network to reduce the loss of small target defects and enhance the network’s feature fusion and extraction capabilities. The experimental results show that the mAP of the whole is increased from 67.1% to 78.2%, and the model can meet the requirements of the identification of car seat surface defects.

This paper presents the first 3D Virtual Service Center of National Telecom public Company Limited (NT), Thailand. The major aims of constructing the digital twin of the service center at the headquarters are to provide customers with new engaging and immersive experiences and to decrease excessive work for employees in the service center. The virtual service center includes features such as an interactive learning simulation of service procedures, demonstrations of the products with animated guidance, and live chat support for realtime communication with NT staff. The preliminary qualitative survey was conducted with undergraduate students at Chulalongkorn University. The feedback has been positive, which includes the immersive quality of the virtual environment, the ease of navigation, the quality of social interaction, and the well-executed. This comprehensive strategy offers a novel and captivating way for customers to engage with the business while also improving customer understanding and service center efficiency.

Microgrids increase resilience, sovereignty, and reduce carbon emissions by utilizing renewable energy resources. This paper explores the feasibility of installing a new microgrid at the Tulalip Tribes' Administration Building. The building will act as a "resiliency zone"for the Tribes, for use as a shelter or command post during natural disasters. This microgrid will supply sufficient power generation and storage for the building while meeting the needs of the client for emergency event coverage and environmental impact. Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) are proposed as alternate resources, along with a pre-existing diesel generator for emergency power generation to build a sustainable microgrid. However, PV and BESS placement and sizing must be assessed properly before delivering it as an effective solution. This use case is not typical, as system constraints and operating conditions are unique from a Tribal community perspective. An extensive study has been conducted using Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources (HOMER) software to find a feasible case where all requirements were reached for the Tribal community and associated utility. All field equivalent datasets are being used to constitute the model in HOMER, and utility outage information is excised to perform as a backup during normal and extreme scenarios. © 2022 IEEE.

Hydrogen is increasingly recognized for its role in enhancing the electrification of the built environment, particularly as a seasonal storage medium to balance the intermittent nature of renewable generation. Despite its potential, the high investment costs of hydrogen technologies make their integration challenging in current energy systems. This study addresses the gap in research concerning the impacts of hydrogen integration within energy communities, focusing on system performance and grid operations through different grid connection scenarios. We explore three grid connection capacities—unlimited, 24 kW, and 16 kW—using a case study from The Green Village. Our findings indicate that an unlimited grid connection poses a risk of grid congestion, whereas a restricted connection could result in unmet load demands. Our results suggest that aligning the grid connection capacity with the peak demand of the energy community effectively balances the need to reduce grid congestion while meeting energy requirements. This research highlights the need for strategic planning in the integration of hydrogen technologies within energy communities, advocating for a balance that supports both energy independence and grid stability.

Deep learning performance may decrease substantially with unseen heterogeneous data. While most unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) methods seek to address this through image alignment, they often ignore uncertainty style fluctuations within the target domain. When testing image styles vary in both direction and intensity, such models may fail to adapt. Furthermore, existing UDA methods tend to over-reliance on domain-level entire feature alignment, resulting in potentially over-exploiting semantic content-independent cues (e.g., intensity) as shortcut features. To address these limitations, this paper introduces an innovative and model-agnostic Causality-inspired Representation Learning Based on Target Style Imitation method for UDA. Specifically, we propose a novel Target Style Imitation (TSI) data augmentation approach to diversify the training data and align training and unseen target testing image styles. TSI constructs a Gaussian distribution for the target domain style and simulates unseen testing style variations through random sampling. Additionally, inspired by the stable and generalizable causal mechanism, we propose Causality-inspired Representation Learning (CRL) based on TSI method to enforce feature representations to adhere to causal properties (i.e., Separation and Independence) essential for robust UDA, thus fostering the model to focus on the domain-invariant semantic features. Our method surpasses state-of-the-art methods on two cross-modality medical image segmentation datasets. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

Effect of Epsilon-Near-Zero Modes on the Casimir Interaction between Ultrathin Films

Vacuum fluctuation-induced interactions between macroscopic metallic objects result in an attractive force between them, a phenomenon known as the Casimir effect. This force is the result of both plasmonic and photonic modes. For very thin films, field penetration through the films will modify the allowed modes. Here, we theoretically investigate the Casimir interaction between ultrathin films from the perspective of force distribution over real frequencies for the first time. Pronounced repulsive contributions to the force are found due to the highly confined and nearly dispersion-free epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) modes that only exist in ultrathin films. These contributions persistently occur around the ENZ frequency of the film irrespective of the interfilm separation. We further associate the ENZ modes with a striking thickness dependence of a proposed figure of merit (FOM) for conductive thin films, suggesting that the motion of objects induced by Casimir interactions is boosted for deeply nanoscale sizes. Our results shed light on the correlation between special electromagnetic modes and the vacuum fluctuation-induced force as well as the resulting mechanical properties of ultrathin ENZ materials, which may create new opportunities for engineering the motion of ultrasmall objects in nanomechanical systems.

This case study analyzes how value is created in the development process of a collaborative training product-service system (PSS) designed for provincial government officials in Vietnam. This initiative, part of the USAID Strengthening Provincial Capacity (USAID SPC) project, encapsulates a series of training solutions designed to empower officials with key skills in engineering and technology management, including the knowledge to improve global value chains, upgrade technology infrastructure and sustainable production models. A primary driver for the “four-day course delivery”, the PSS analyzed in this study, was to bolster economic competitiveness at the provincial level in the context of Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0). This case study offers lessons on stakeholder-value mapping and recommendations for future approaches to training courses development that enhances capacity development. These trainings aligned with the demands of balancing organizational development and public value creation in the context of developing countries transitioning to a knowledge economy, such as Vietnam. The learnings from this case study may provide a blueprint for similar endeavors in other countries navigating the complexities of digital transformation of public services.

This study addresses the critical aspects of renewable energy development in Bangladesh, identifying challenges and offering practical solutions. It recommends revising and enhancing renewable energy policies to establish realistic and inclusive targets over short, medium, and long terms. Financial support is advocated through the introduction of incentives and subsidies, particularly to overcome economic barriers hindering widespread solar technology adoption, with a focus on rural areas. The proposal includes combining feedin tariff and net metering, removing the limit in net metering, and offering tax exemptions for early-stage independent power producers. Additionally, the study underscores the need for integrated institutional and capacity development, emphasizing the establishment of an institute for skill building and technology innovation. Collaboration is a key theme, urging synergies between academia, government, and industries to bridge the gap between expertise, policies, and applications, ultimately contributing to a sustainable energy future in Bangladesh.

Persons who have experienced a prior myocardial infarction (MI) are at a greater risk of experiencing a secondary event. External factors, such as stress, can cause transient hypertension, further increasing cardiovascular disease risk. However, challenges to monitoring stress-induced hypertension include obtrusiveness of monitoring devices, unknown validity in high-risk populations, and unsubstantiated sensitivity in stressful environments. In this pilot study, we investigated data from a validated, multimodal, wearable patch to examine physiological correlates of laboratory-based hypertensive stress responses. The device collected electrocardiogram, seismocardiogram, and photoplethysmogram signals from 35 participants (26 post-MI and 9 healthy participants) during a protocol involving a public speaking stressor. We calculated the change from rest to stress in 10 features extracted from these signals and assessed their correlation to stress-induced changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP) derived from a validated brachial pressure cuff. MAP changes correlated significantly with changes in heart rate (p<0.001, r=0.69), left ventricular ejection time (p<0.001, r=-0.63), pulse arrival time (p<0.001, r=-0.58), and pulse transit time (p<0.001, r=-0.56) captured by the *** relevance— We demonstrate the potential of a multimodal patch to capture multiple physiological correlates of stress-induced hypertension with moderate dose-response effect sizes. Future work with larger populations could combine these physiological correlates for the purpose of cardiovascular risk stratification using low-burden technologies.
