Nowadays, organizations must comply with high-quality standards, health and safety regulations, and socially sustainable practices to succeed in a globalized world. Supply Chains (SC) enable them to satisfy their customers' needs for quality products just in time and at the best price. However, management systems (MS) need to be improved to identify, evaluate, and control ergonomic risks, which opens a research opportunity for Ergonomics Management Systems (EMS) as they apply to sustainable SCs. This study aims to design and validate an instrument to assess the EMS within a SC using a continuous improvement approach. The study used convenience sampling as experts were invited by e-mail, at congresses, and through a digital platform. A response rate of 6.2 % was obtained from the latter, and a total of 34 experts responded to the instrument. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were also carried out for the constructs of PLAN, DO, CHECK, and ACT. Finally, factors and variables were reduced by 42.71 %, leaving a 46-item final version of the instrument. Most of the structural model fit indices for the sample demonstrated good values, and the reliability indices were acceptable, this confirming the overall reliability of the instrument. In conclusion, the instrument was validated for all proposed constructs, with the exception of the PLAN construct. Thus, the instrument was found to be relevant and fit for implementation in EMS. © 2024

We address the performance analysis issue of the buffer-aided energy harvesting device-to-device communication system. A Coupled Processor Queuing Model with data packet and energy packet poisson arrival but interactive departure is proposed. The Quasi-Birth and Death method is adopted to obtain the steady state transition probability of proposed queuing model. Then the expressions of throughput, delay and packet drop rate for both data queue and energy queue are derived. The simulations verify the accuracy of the theoretical derivation results. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Osteoporosis is a common age-related disease characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD), micro-structural deterioration, and enhanced fracture-risk. Although, BMD is clinically used to define osteoporosis, there are compelling evidences that bone micro-structural properties are strong determinants of bone strength and fracture-risk. Reliable measures of effective trabecular bone (Tb) micro-structural features are of paramount clinical significance. Tb consists of transverse and longitudinal micro-structures, and there is a hypothesis that transverse trabeculae improve bone strength by arresting buckling of longitudinal trabeculae. In this paper, we present an emerging clinical CT-based new method for characterizing transverse and longitudinal trabeculae, validate the method, and examine its application in human studies. Specifically, we examine repeat CT scan reproducibility, and evaluate the relationships of these measures with gender and body size using human CT data from the Iowa Bone Development Study (IBDS) (n = 99;49 female). This policy note aims to raise awareness of the importance of adopting cybersecurity modelling and simulation techniques that embody integrated social and technical factors. It is based on research and synthesis following a state-of-the-art literature survey and engagement workshop with critical infrastructure stakeholders hosted by the Department for Transport (DfT) in February 2019, and a desk-based study in the ongoing (2020-2022) PETRAS Modelling for Sociotechnical Security (MASS) project. Participants from academia, business and industrial sectors, and government came together to discuss the effectiveness of modelling and simulation to support the protection of modern Critical Infrastructure Systems. The discussion also covered how government effort, through policy interventions, can support the National Cyber Security Strategy 2016-2021, and beyond. Although the focus of the initial workshop was the transport sector, the insights drawn and recommendations made can be applied to other critical national infrastructure sectors such as Energy, Water, Defence, Chemicals, and Food. This policy briefing is targeted at government departments and agencies with management and regulatory roles linked to critical infrastructure sectors listed above. The advice may be particularly relevant to DfT, Cabinet Office, BEIS, Home Office, DCMS, DEFRA, and GO-Science. © 2022, CC BY.

Peripheral blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) is an essential indicator of respiratory functionality and received increasing attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. Clinical findings show that COVID-19 patients can have significantly low SpO2 before any obvious symptoms. Measuring an individual’s SpO2 without having to come into contact with the person can lower the risk of cross contamination and blood circulation problems. The prevalence of smartphones has motivated researchers to investigate methods for monitoring SpO2 using smartphone cameras. Most prior schemes involving smartphones are contact-based: They require using a fingertip to cover the phone’s camera and the nearby light source to capture reemitted light from the illuminated tissue. In this paper, we propose the first convolutional neural network based noncontact SpO2 estimation scheme using smartphone cameras. The scheme analyzes the videos of an individual’s hand for physiological sensing, which is convenient and comfortable for users and can protect their privacy and allow for keeping face masks on. We design explainable neural network architectures inspired by the optophysiological models for SpO2 measurement and demonstrate the explainability by visualizing the weights for channel combination. Our proposed models outperform the state-of-the-art model that is designed for contact-based SpO2 measurement, showing the potential of the proposed method to contribute to public health. Governments around the world are trying to build large data registries for effective delivery of a variety of public services. However, these efforts are often undermined due to serious concerns over privacy risks associated with collection and processing of personally identifiable information. While a rich set of special-purpose privacy-preserving techniques exist in computer science, they are unable to provide end-to-end protection in alignment with legal principles in the absence of an overarching operational architecture to ensure purpose limitation and protection against insider attacks. This either leads to weak privacy protection in large designs, or adoption of overly defensive strategies to protect privacy by compromising on utility. In this paper, we present an operational architecture for privacy-by-design based on independent regulatory oversight stipulated by most data protection regimes, regulated access control, purpose limitation and data minimisation. We briefly discuss the feasibility of implementing our architecture based on existing techniques. Resting-state EEG (rs-EEG) has been demonstrated to aid in Parkinson's disease (PD) diagnosis. In particular, the power spectral density (PSD) of low-frequency bands (δ and θ) and high-frequency bands (α and β) has been shown to be significantly different in patients with PD as compared to subjects without PD (non-PD). However, rs-EEG feature extraction and the interpretation thereof can be time-intensive and prone to examiner variability. Machine learning (ML) has the potential to automatize the analysis of rs-EEG recordings and provides a supportive tool for clinicians to ease their workload. In this work, we use rs-EEG recordings of 84 PD and 85 non-PD subjects pooled from four datasets obtained at different centers. We propose an end-to-end pipeline consisting of preprocessing, extraction of PSD features from clinically-validated frequency bands, and feature selection before evaluating the classification ability of the features via ML algorithms to stratify between PD and non-PD subjects. Further, we evaluate the effect of feature harmonization, given the multi-center nature of the datasets. Our validation results show, on average, an improvement in PD detection ability (69.6% vs. 75.5% accuracy) by logistic regression when harmonizing the features and performing univariate feature selection (k = 202 features). Our final results show an average global accuracy of 72.2% with balanced accuracy results for all the centers included in the study: 60.6%, 68.7%, 77.7%, and 82.2%, respectively. Clinical relevance- We present an end-to-end pipeline to extract clinically relevant features from rs-EEG recordings that can facilitate the analysis and detection of PD. Further, we provide an ML system that shows a good performance in detecting PD, even in the presence of centers with different acquisition protocols. Our results show the relevance of harmonizing features and provide a good starting point for future studies focusing on rs-EEG analysis and multi-center data. © 20

Contribution: Case study of a rural-focused educational program with two components: 1) introducing high school students and teachers to Smart and Connected Technologies (SCTs) that can be used to solve local problems;2) engaging the local community in supporting local technology-driven entrepreneurship. Background: Rural communities typically lag behind in terms of participation in the digital economy, and use of technology in general. Yet they often have the most to gain, due to high rates of self-employment and lower private-sector job opportunities. Research Questions: Can a broadly-scoped rural technology education program lead to improvements in 1) student and teacher SCT awareness, 2) SCT skills, 3) aspirations for future SCT use directed toward entrepreneurship and overall community wellbeing? Methodology: Our multidisciplinary team used a mixed-methods approach to engage a rural high school robotics team as well as the local community. Over the course of one year, students took part in hands-on-training with SCTs ("PETE-Kits" and associated curriculum) and brainstormed entrepreneurial projects via ideation events. Community members were involved at the beginning and end of the project, including judging a "shark-tank" style event where student business ideas using SCT were presented. Findings: Results from student pre/post activity assessments suggest that the program was effective at increasing comfort with technology and combining technical skills with entrepreneurial opportunities. Post surveys from community members, including teachers, demonstrated clear support for the program and an appreciation of how SCTs/digital skills could benefit the local economy and wellbeing. China is now confronting the intertwined challenges of air pollution and climate *** the high synergies between air pollution abatement and climate change mitigation,the Chinese government is actively promoting synergetic control of these two *** Synergetic Roadmap project was launched in 2021 to track and analyze the progress of synergetic control in China by developing and monitoring key *** Synergetic Roadmap 2022 report is the first annual update,featuring 20 indicators across five aspects:synergetic governance system and practices,progress in structural transition,air pollution and associated weather-climate interactions,sources,sinks,and mitigation pathway of atmospheric composition,and health impacts and benefits of coordinated *** to the comprehensive review presented in the 2021 report,the Synergetic Roadmap 2022 report places particular emphasis on progress in 2021 with highlights on actions in key sectors and the relevant *** milestones include the proportion of non-fossil power generation capacity surpassing coal-fired capacity for the first time,a decline in the production of crude steel and cement after years of growth,and the surging penetration of electric ***,in 2022,China issued the first national policy that synergizes abatements of pollution and carbon emissions,marking a new era for China's pollution-carbon *** changes highlight China's efforts to reshape its energy,economic,and transportation structures to meet the demand for synergetic control and sustainable ***,the country has witnessed a slowdown in carbon emission growth,improved air quality,and increased health benefits in recent years.
