As global climates continue to evolve, the urgency to enhance built environments against environmental challenges becomes more pronounced. Inspired by the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) -a widely adopted index for assessing how smart a building is- this paper introduces a framework designed to assess and evaluate the climate resilience of buildings. Unlike the static approach of the SRI, our framework employs dynamic weighting that considers the specific climatic conditions of a building's location. The paper explores climate exposure analysis, examining different climate hazards and incorporating weather data for comprehensive exposure assessment. This initial step provides a thorough understanding of the environmental challenges buildings face. Subsequently, we detail the building climate resilience impact assessment, offering a structured and quantifiable method for assessing and benchmarking the resilience of various building typologies. Through an extensive evaluation across six general categories of building elements, including the building envelope and energy systems, our methodology offers detailed insights into buildings' climate resilience and their capacity to endure specific climate hazards. The framework's application is demonstrated through pilot cases, with results from the climate exposure analysis and the climate resilience assessment presented. Finally, the paper summarizes key findings, highlighting the framework's role in promoting climate-resilient building practices and the critical importance of robust assessment tools for evaluating building resilience in the face of changing environmental challenges. © 2024, The Authors. The Advancements in biomedical technologies have led to the need for a sector responsible for management of all medical equipment in health establishments, thus coming to clinical engineering. There are three basic types of causes of failures that occur in these equipment: human error, technology failure, and external phenomena. Monitoring maintenance events is essential to understand what leads to these failures and, thus, seek solutions to mitigate them. Thus, the present work aims to analyze the requests for maintenance in the largest trauma hospital in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, categorizing them in an attempt to understand the maintenance occurrences and carelessness with the equipment. For this, a survey of maintenance calls for biomedical equipment was performed, in the period of 3 months (February to May 2022), at the Monsenhor Walfredo Gurgel Hospital in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. After data collection, it was found that 51.18% of the calls for maintenance corresponded to human error, and that a large part of the occurrences due to human error were related to problems with dirt and the others to false calls arising from the lack of information about correct operation of this equipment. From the classification, it is understood in a process of listening and observation of these professionals, that errors are caused, above all, by the lack of periodic training of the hospital’s medical team. The implementation of a training routine would be a solution to alleviate the occurrences of maintenance in the hospital in question. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

With the rapid development of renewable energy generation, governments have released various policies to reduce the portion of the energy generated from the burning of fossil fuel, of which the carbon emission tax is one of the most effective methods. Blockchain is considered as the optimal ecosystem to protect and trace the energy transactions with carbon taxes. This paper proposes a distributed Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) public blockchain with a smart contract function to support a double auction based pricing scheme and execute a carbon tax compensation mechanism, which reduce the trading cost of prosumers and improve the social welfare. A 13-prosumer energy trading model is performed in the case study to experiment the blockchain performance. Numerical results prove the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method. © 2022 IEEE.

Generating realistic sketches of human faces is an important research direction in the fields of computer vision and computer graphics. However, generating high-quality sketch faces remains challenging, especially when dealing with incomplete input sketch images. In this paper, we propose a framework based on the U-Net generative network, which progressively optimizes network performance through a three-stage training strategy. We introduce the Sketch Guidance and Completion Network (SGCN), which is capable of restoring missing features, completing blurry edges, and handling occluded regions in sketch images. By employing multiple discriminators and adversarial training strategies, we enhance the realism and preserve fine details in the generated results. Through experiments on publicly available sketch face datasets, we demonstrate significant improvements in reconstructing incomplete sketch faces using our approach. The generated images exhibit enhanced completeness, realism, and retain fine details and important facial features. Quantitative evaluations validate the effectiveness and superiority of our method. © 2023 IEEE.

While cycling offers an attractive option for sus-tainable transportation, many potential cyclists are discouraged from taking up cycling due to the lack of suitable and safe infrastructure. Efficiently mapping cycling infrastructure across entire cities is necessary to advance our understanding of how to provide connected networks of high-quality infrastructure. Therefore we propose a system capable of classifying available cycling infrastructure from on-bike smartphone camera data. The system receives an image sequence as input, temporally analyzing the sequence to account for sparsity of signage. The model outputs cycling infrastructure class labels defined by a hi-erarchical classification system. Data is collected via participant cyclists covering 7,006Km across the Greater Melbourne region that is automatically labeled via a GPS and OpenStreetMap database matching algorithm. The proposed model achieved an accuracy of 95.38%, an increase in performance of 7.55% compared to the non-temporal model. The model demonstrated robustness to extreme absence of image features where the model lost only 6.6% in accuracy after 90% of images being replaced with blank images. This work is the first to classify cycling infrastructure using only street-level imagery collected from bike-mounted mobile phone cameras, while demonstrating robustness to feature sparsity via long temporal sequence analysis.

In this paper the problem of congestion management in the power grid under the application of the day-ahead dispatch schedule, is faced based on developing a day-ahead guideline regarding the required modifications to the power units’ output to yield a more uniform loading to the grid’s lines. These modifications result by comparing the dispatch schedule provided by an optimal power flow (OPF) analysis for the grid, under the objective function of power loss minimization, with the schedule for the day-ahead dispatch schedule. The point here is that the solution for the latter approach is based on an economical perspective while the former one on a technical one. The proposed approach is tested on the benchmarked 118 bus system which was modified to simulate the Greek transmission network. The day-ahead schedule is initially applied on the system to depict possible congestion issues via a power flow (PF) analysis. Then, an OPF analysis is applied in order to reschedule the power output of the power units, within their operational limits, aiming at power loss minimization. The results indicate that congestion mitigation in terms of lines’ loading below their thermal limit could result under proper and guided alterations for the power units output. © 2022 IET Conference Proceedings. Purpose of Review: We survey operational models of water-distribution systems. Although such modeling is important in its own right, our focus is motivated by the growing desire to examine and manage the nexus between water-distribution and electricity systems. As such, our survey discusses computational challenges in modeling water-distribution systems, co-ordination dynamics between water-distribution and electricity systems, and gaps in the literature. Recent Findings: Modeling water-distribution systems is made difficult by their highly non-linear and non-convex physical properties. Co-ordinating water-distribution and electricity systems, especially with the growing supply and demand uncertainties of the latter, requires fast optimization techniques for real-time system management. Although many works suggest means of co-ordinating the two systems, practical applications are limited, due to the systems having separate and autonomous management and ownership. Nonetheless, recent works are navigating this challenge, by seeking methods to foster improved co-ordination of the two systems while respecting their autonomy. Additionally, with the backdrop of increased security threats, there is a growing need to bolster infrastructure protection, which is complicated by the intertwined nature of the two systems. Summary: By providing a steady supply of potable water to satisfy residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial demands, water-distribution systems are pivotal components of modern society and infrastructure. The extant literature presents many models and optimization strategies that are tailored for operating water-distribution systems. Yet, there remain unexplored problems, particularly related to simplifying model computation, capturing the flexibility of water-distribution systems, and capturing interdependencies between water-distribution and other systems and infrastructures. in a 115 kV switchyard substation, there are several major equipment that are gradually deteriorated due to ageing and degradation. Those equipment are one of the important element in a power generating utility to supply the reliable electricity to diverse customers. Therefore, their failures would cause catastrophic consequences and lead to long outage time. Thus, the need for condition and performance assessments of those switchyard equipment for life extension purposes is obligatory to ensure system reliability, to meet customer requirements and to optimize the investment cost. To access the condition of such high voltage equipment, protective relays, building structure and equipment foundations, their technical specification as well as visual inspection and preventive maintenance results of individual equipment must be systematically analyzed to determine the possibility for life extension according to manufacturer guideline as well as international standards and recommendations for condition aging assessment representing in term of conditional aging index. While the other aspects as age, rating adequacy, technology obsolescence, satisfaction in operation, failure rate and defect severity are required to determine the need for renovation/replacement known as replacement index. Then, the proposed methodology has been employed to assess the condition and performance of each equipment such as every major high voltage equipment, control building, protective relays in a switchyard of power station with satisfactory result. © 2024 The Korean Institute of electrical Engineers (KIEE).

This article introduces ‘cpp11armadillo’, a new R package that integrates the powerful Armadillo C++ library for linear algebra into the R programming environment. Targeted primarily at social scientists and other non-programmers, this article explains the computational benefits of moving code to C++ in terms of speed and syntax. We provide a comprehensive overview of Armadillo’s capabilities, highlighting its user-friendly syntax akin to MATLAB and its efficiency for computationally intensive tasks. The ‘cpp11armadillo’ package simplifies a part of the process of using C++ within R by offering additional ease of integration for those who require high-performance linear algebra operations in their R workflows. This work aims to bridge the gap between computational efficiency and accessibility, making advanced linear algebra operations more approachable for R users without extensive programming backgrounds. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

public policy-making has a strong impact on our daily lives and on most of the aspects of our society including its relation with the environment. Sustainability as a global goal cannot be achieved without effective policies supporting it. The current trend in policy-making has two main pillars, policies are a) co-created with citizens and other relevant stakeholders and b) data-based to take informed decisions. Information technologies are needed to support these pillars and facilitate evidence-based policy-making. We present the DECIDO Portal that acts as a catalyst towards putting these general principles into practice gathering the technical components to be used within the whole policy life cycle. Notably, the portal lays its foundations on a well-defined co-creation methodology that can be seamlessly followed from a unique portal and provides best-practices for participatory processes and data-driven analyses. A set of real-world experimental policies in different countries serves as case studies to showcase and discuss the usage of the portal. © 2023 IEEE.
