This paper aims to develop a sensor based monitoring and analyzing system for Neuro-Degenerative Disorder patients (NDD);this may consist on SpO2 sensor, Electrophysiological sensors, NIBP, Motion Capture sensors and Eye Monitoring sensor, taking into consideration an acceptable cost for the whole system. Recorded data will be sent to an embedded decision making unit where detection, analysis, classification, prediction and action control will occur. The sensors and the decision making unit will be implemented in a comfortable jacket that doesn't affect the patients' movements and that can be used by several patients with reduced sensor placement alterations. The decision that can be made is creating a stimulus to avoid falling in case of sudden stop while moving, initiating an alarm, sending a notification to a mobile phone application, and/or telemedicine monitoring features. Artificial Neural Networks will be used to classify and predict the abnormal cases where action should be taken, and since the sensors will be continuously recording, it is possible to achieve continuous learning for the ANN as a first phase. Initial models will be defined by testing normal behaviors and some known abnormal behaviors or symptoms related to the electrical activity and other characteristics of the heart, oxygen saturation level, eye activity and body motion. © 2016 IEEE.

Carotid plaque rupture is a primary cause of ischemic strokes and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). Probability of stroke and TIAs depend on the mechanical stability of plaque. Ultrasound strain can provide a non-invasive assessment of plaque stiffness to assess mechanical stability. We report on ultrasound strain indices from multiple regions of interest (ROI) in plaque as biomarkers for plaque instability. © 2017 IEEE.

Conditional survival (CS), the survival beyond a pre-defined time interval, can identify periods of higher mortality risk for patients with locally advanced laryngeal cancer who face treatment-related toxicity and comorbidities related to alcohol and smoking in the survivorship setting. Using Weibull regression modeling, we analyzed retrospectively abstracted data from 638 records of patients who received radiation to identify prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and recurrence free survival (RFS) for the first 3 years of survival and for OS conditional upon 3 years of survival. The CS was iteratively calculated, stratifying on variables that were statistically significant on multivariate regression. Predictive nomograms were generated. The median total follow up time was 175 months. The 3-and 6-year actuarial overall survival (OS) was 68% (95% confidence interval [CI] 65-72%) and 49% (CI 45-53%). The 3-year conditional overall survival (COS) at 3 years was 72% (CI 65-74%). Black patients had worse COS over time. Nodal disease was significantly associated with recurrence, but after 3 years, the 3-year conditional RFS converged for all nodal groups. In conclusion, the CS analysis in this patient cohort identified subgroups and time intervals that may represent opportunities for intervention.

Data collected by PLN staff on customer's complaints in the usage of electricity are very huge and accumulate. Previously, there was no information about these kinds of complaints in all sub-districts included inside the company, PT. PLN Binjai. On the other hand, each year company experienced problems to classify all complaints in order to obtain customers with information to later be used as a basis for making policy/decision. Data mining used clustering method and K-Means algorithm to classify the data so that important information is obtained from customer's complaints on the electricity usage, using variable: types of complaints, power using by consumer and consumer's region. Data was analyzed using Matlab to produce cluster centers and obtained a relationship between variables obtained with groups with high number of complaints. Results revealed that from 500 customers who have complained, cluster 1 had 218 complaints namely NT Fuse Putus with power used was 1300 watt and was located in Binjai.

Vast quantities of personal health information and private identifiable information are being created through mobile apps, wearable sensors, and social networks. While new strategies and tools for obtaining health data have expanded researchers' abilities to design and test personalized and adaptive health interventions, the deployment of pervasive sensing and computational techniques to gather research data is raising ethical challenges for Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) charged with protecting research participants. To explore experiences with, and perceptions about, technology-enabled research, and identify solutions for promoting responsible conduct of this research we conducted focus groups with human research protection program and IRB affiliates. Our findings outline the need for increased collaboration across stakeholders in terms of: (1) shared and dynamic resources that improve awareness of technologies and decrease potential threats to participant privacy and data confidentiality, and (2) development of appropriate and dynamic standards through collaboration with stakeholders in the research ethics community. © 2017 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

We provide a complete picture of asymptotically minimax estimation of Lr-norms (for any r ≥ 1) of the mean in Gaussian white noise model over Nikolskii-Besov spaces. In this regard, we complement the work of [LNS99], who considered the cases of r = 1 (with poly-logarithmic gap between upper and lower bounds) and r even (with asymptotically sharp upper and lower bounds) over Hölder spaces. We additionally consider the case of asymptotically adaptive minimax estimation and demonstrate a difference between even and non-even r in terms of an investigator’s ability to produce asymptotically adaptive minimax estimators without paying a penalty. Transcriptomics, regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), and a virtual reality-based spatial motor task were integrated using mediation analysis in a novel demonstration of "imaging omics." Data collected in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I football athletes cleared for play before in-season training showed significant relationships in 1) elevated levels of miR-30d and miR-92a to elevated putamen rCBF, 2) elevated putamen rCBF to compromised Balance scores, and 3) compromised Balance scores to elevated microRNA (miRNA) levels. rCBF acted as a consistent mediator variable (Sobel's test < 0.05) between abnormal miRNA levels and compromised Balance scores. Given the involvement of these miRNAs in inflammation and immune function and that vascular perfusion is a component of the inflammatory response, these findings support a chronic inflammatory model in these athletes with 11 years of average football exposure. rCBF, a systems biology measure, was necessary for miRNA to affect behavior.
