This paper presents a novel adaptive bias technique based on the use of squaring circuits. Here, the tail current of an operational amplifier (OpAmp) is controlled using an auxiliary circuit. By design, it generates a well-controlled tail current which - to a first order approximation - is independent of the OpAmp's common-mode input voltage. As a result, parameters like common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) and power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) are enhanced. However, when a differential input signal is applied, it generates a tail current proportional to the square of the OpAmp's differential input voltage. In this way, the currents of the OpAmp's input pairs are boosted, thus improving slew rate. Experimental results in 0.5 μm CMOS technology verify current and slew rate enhancement factors between 10 and 15 with less than 20% static current increase.

In this paper, we design and evaluate the feasibility of a system which minimizes residential electricity cost of individual homes by shifting demand over a daily forecast price cycle. Ideally, our system will accept use-time preferences from consumers and optimize their appliances' operation around those given patterns. However, using the system to recommend optimum use-times to consumers is also possible by accepting ideal use preferences from an external load manager and computing the cost savings of these preferences relative to the cost of the consumer's current use patterns. We implement the optimization problem in two stages by using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP). In the first stage, we obtain the optimum scheduling for appliances to be connected to the outlet; the output of this stage only shows the hours that we can use the appliance and does not reflect the actual consumption hours of each appliance. In the second stage, we model the random behavior of users via Monte Carlo simulation by running the appliances within the times they receive power, specified in the first stage. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model in terms of cost savings by considering three appliances and four pricing schemes.

Background: Digital whole slide imaging may be useful for obtaining second opinions and is used in many countries. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires verification studies. Methods: Pathologists were randomized to interpret one of four sets of breast biopsy cases during two phases, separated by ≥9 months, using glass slides or digital format (sixty cases per set, one slide per case, n = 240 cases). Accuracy was assessed by comparing interpretations to a consensus reference standard. Intraobserver reproducibility was assessed by comparing the agreement of interpretations on the same cases between two phases. Estimated probabilities of confirmation by a reference panel (i.e., predictive values) were obtained by incorporating data on the population prevalence of diagnoses. Results: Sixty-five percent of responding pathologists were eligible, and 252 consented to randomization;208 completed Phase I (115 glass, 93 digital);and 172 completed Phase II (86 glass, 86 digital). Accuracy was slightly higher using glass compared to digital format and varied by category: invasive carcinoma, 96% versus 93% (P = 0.04);ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), 84% versus 79% (P < 0.01);atypia, 48% versus 43% (P = 0.08);and benign without atypia, 87% versus 82% (P < 0.01). There was a small decrease in intraobserver agreement when the format changed compared to when glass slides were used in both phases (P = 0.08). Predictive values for confirmation by a reference panel using glass versus digital were: invasive carcinoma, 98% and 97% (not significant [NS]);DCIS, 70% and 57% (P = 0.007);atypia, 38% and 28% (P = 0.002);and benign without atypia, 97% and 96% (NS). Conclusions: In this large randomized study, digital format interpretations were similar to glass slide interpretations of benign and invasive cancer cases. This paper proposes Health Drive, a novel mobile healthcare platform with context-aware multiple-sensor integration to promote safe driving. Health Drive employs a multi-tier vehicular social network (M-VSN) architecture that consists of three tiers: network tier, mobile device tier and cloud tier. The network tier provides communication supports, and the mobile device tier works in parallel with the cloud tier to integrate and interpret diverse sensing data. The three tiers work together to provide a seamless solution that can efficiently collect and interpret diverse sensing data in the heterogeneous environments found in vehicular networks, to deliver personalized service to drivers for safety improvement in real-time. We evaluate the system performance of Health Drive and provide results of practical experiments to show the desired functionality and feasibility of Health Drive in the real-world for safety improvement in transportation.

Whey is an abundant by-product of cheese production process and it is considered a special waste due to its high nutritional load and hypertrophic potential. Technologies for whey valorization are available. They can convert such waste into high-value products, like whey proteins. However, the remaining liquid (called permeate) is still considered as a polluting waste due to its high lactose concentration. The alcoholic fermentation of lactose into ethanol will simultaneously achieve two important goals: safe disposal of a pollutant waste and green energy production. This methodology paper illustrates the workflow carried out to design and realize an optimized microorganism that can efficiently perform the lactose-to-ethanol conversion, engineered via synthetic biology experimental and computational approaches. © 2015 IEEE.

Crowdsourcing allows for rapid deployment of indoor localization systems. However, compared to the conventional methods, crowdsourcing might collect fewer received signal strength (RSS) values, hence result in greater influence to outliers in RSS values. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to detect such outliers and to substitute them with more suitable RSS values. In particular, we investigate the relationship of RSS values between adjacent locations using a signal propagation model and show that the outliers can be corrected using a signal propagation model. We propose the Signal Propagation-based Outlier Reduction Technic (SPORT) for identifying and adjusting outlier values in both the offline training phase and the online localization phase. Experimental results show that SPORT greatly smoothens the radio map and improves the location accuracy.

In this paper we propose a Dynamic Modeling and Decision Systems (DyMonDS) framework for modeling, simulating and designing cyber in the changing electric energy systems. The approach is fundamentally physics-based, which helps identify the relevant multi-layered structure of their complex dynamics. The common thread throughout the paper is the idea that coupling within a complex interconnected system can be represented using energy stored in different components and the rate of energy exchange with the rest of the system. This idea supports modeling in a transformed state space which makes it possible to systematically design interactive cyber for managing dynamics of energy exchange for provable performance in the evolving multi-physics energy systems. We describe a general scalable DyMonDS simulator currently under the development by our group for demonstrating potential of newly proposed cyber.

In this paper, we present the architecture, design and experiences from a wirelessly managed microgrid deployment in rural Les Anglais, Haiti. The system consists of a three-tiered architecture with a cloud-based monitoring and control service, a local embedded gateway infrastructure and a mesh network of wireless smart meters deployed at 52 buildings. Each smart meter device has an 802.15.4 radio that enables remote monitoring and control of electrical service. The meters communicate over a scalable multi-hop TDMA network back to a central gateway that manages load within the system. The gateway also provides an 802.11 interface for an on-site operator and a cellular modem connection to a cloud-backend that manages and stores billing and usage data. The cloud backend allows occupants in each home to pre-pay for electricity at a particular peak power limit using a text messaging service. The system activates each meter within seconds and locally enforces power limits with provisioning for theft detection. We believe that this fine-grained micro-payment model can enable sustainable power in otherwise unfeasible areas. This paper provides a chronology of our deployment and installation strategy that involved GPS-based site mapping along with various network conditioning actions required as the network evolved. Finally, we summarize key lessons learned and hypothesis about additional hardware that could be used to ease the tracing of faults like short circuits and downed lines within microgrids.
