Patients and caregivers often seek help and support through online forums for their ailments. In many health forums, users can not only participate in existing, sitedefined user groups but also initiate their own groups. To better understand the mechanism and usefulness of such user-created groups, we comparatively studied their characteristics against those of site-defined groups, based on an empirical dataset of over three years of user activities in health forums collected from ***. In the study, we first derived a categorization of user-created groups according to the underlying reasons leading to their creation, and then investigated if there are significant differences between user-created and site-defined groups with respect to group memberships, activity levels, social network metrics, and interaction patterns. The results show that users initiate more homophily driven communities and social interactions, and that the members of user-created groups are more vocal and more socially active than those who have only participated in site-defined groups. The findings suggest that allowing users to create their own groups could improve user engagement in health forums, foster rapport among users, and ultimately lead to a cohesive social environment that supports more effective information sharing and community building. We present Chill-Out, an adaptive biofeedback game that teaches relaxation skills by monitoring the breathing rate of the player. The game uses a positive feedback loop that penalizes fast breathing by means of a proportional derivative control law: rapid (and/or increasing) breathing rates increase game difficulty and reduce the final score of the game. We evaluated Chill-Out against a conventional non-biofeedback game and traditional relaxation based on deep breathing. Measurements of breathing rate, electrodermal activity, and heart rate variability show that playing Chill-Out leads to lower arousal during a subsequent task designed to induce stress. © Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2014.

This paper introduces a simple approach for the implementation of rail-to-rail operational amplifiers (OpAmps) with constant g_m using only one differential input pair. It is based on the utilization of switched voltage followers that introduce a DC level shift when the OpAmp's common mode input voltage is lower than the headroom of the input differential pair (DP). Additional circuitry is introduced in order to make the DP tail current insensitive to common mode input voltage variations. This improves CMRR and PSRR and reduces g_m variations. The additional circuitry increases power dissipation by less than 20%. Simulation results are presented that verify rail-to-rail operation with ±1.65 supply voltages in 0.5μm CMOS technology.

In an increasingly instrumented and inter-connected digital world, citizens generate vast amounts of data, much of it personal, and nearly all of it valuable. However, controlling who can collect it, limiting what they can do with it, and determining how best to protect it, remain deeply undecided issues. This position paper proposes a socio-technical solution based on collective awareness and informed consent, whereby data collection and data protection norms are configured by the users themselves, using a collaborative participatory process of argumentation. This refers to the ability of users to understand privacy-related documents and their implications via participatory processes, wisdom-of-the-crowds approaches and visual cues. By strengthening the trust bond between service developers and users, the transformative impact of this solution, called Privacy-by-Norms (Pb Norms), will be to encourage innovation and to ensure that (big) data's (tiny) generators are also its beneficiaries. Pb Norms will aim to complement existing top-down solutions to data protection that rely on technical or legal provisions. The goal is to enable citizens to express their privacy expectations through the use of mature ICT technologies from the fields of Computational Argumentation and the Semantic Web.

In this paper, we investigate two decomposition methods for their convergence rate which are used to solve security constrained economic dispatch (SCED): 1) Lagrangian Relaxation (LR), and 2) Augmented Lagrangian Relaxation (ALR). First, the centralized SCED problem is posed for a 6-bus test network and then it is decomposed into subproblems using both of the methods. In order to model the tie-line between decomposed areas of the test network, a novel method is proposed. The advantages and drawbacks of each method are discussed in terms of accuracy and information privacy. We show that there is a tradeoff between the information privacy and the convergence rate. It has been found that ALR converges faster compared to LR, due to the large amount of shared data.

Permanent magnet generators' (PMGs) dimensions scale with rated power due the sizing law for PMGs, which necessitates increased rotor volume to provide additional torque, preventing use of PMGs in large scale wind turbines. The use of higher energy density permanent magnets may offset the need to scale dimensions to achieve higher input torque. The properties of a permanent magnet necessary to achieve 25% reduction in dimensions in a 10MW wind turbine were calculated. A 29% increase in torque as a result of a 34% increase in the energy product of the permanent magnet is demonstrated.

We have designed a mobile device application (RRate), to provide an efficient measurement of respiratory rate with clinically acceptable accuracy. The method is based on analysis of multiple consecutive breath intervals. We investigated in this study the difference in measurement variability between breaths as a representative of recording quality. Respiratory rate of 322 children aged 0 - 12 years at a Ugandan rural health centre were recorded using the RRate mobile application, and compared to respiratory rate recordings obtained from 22 volunteers using the RRate application while observing 10 videos of children breathing in a lab setting. The variability of the recorded breaths (confidence) of both groups follow a similar Weibull distribution. However, we observed a trend towards higher variability in the data obtained in the field (median 89.7% confidence) compared to the data obtained in the laboratory setting (median 92.6% confidence). This suggests that it is more difficult to obtain consistent measurements when assessing patients in a clinical setting, and therefore the confidence in the measured respiratory rate is reduced. The mobile device application provided a respiratory rate value up to 6 times faster than the current practice of one minute counting. The measure of variability between individual measured breaths provided a powerful way to display confidence in a measurement.
