In this work, two different antenna prototypes working at THz frequencies and consisting of a central slot surrounded by corrugations are analyzed. In the first case, the corrugations are annular, leading to a moderately high gain. Its radiation and temporal properties are analyzed both numerically and experimentally. The other antenna has straight corrugations with triangular profile. Its radiation characteristics are numerically compared with the typical square corrugations profile, with no significant differences between them. Experimental results at 0.5THz show good performance of the design. These results could be of interest for the development of new THz sources and detectors.

In this work, a pulse shaper in coplanar technology intended for the unlicensed band up to the THz region is designed, fabricated, and measured. This broadband frequency range is of great interests as it offers very high data rate communication in local area networks. The technique employs tailored coplanar lines that have been designed using an exact analytical series solution of the synthesis problem derived from the coupled-mode theory. The frequency response of the pulse-shaping device introduced in the synthesis method depends on the spectrum of the applied THz impulse generator, application-dependent devices (e.g. antenna) with known responses, and desired THz output response. Here, the desired output pulse is a combination of Hermite polynomials with 5 ps of temporal duration. The designed device has been simulated in the frequency domain and the obtained result of the S11 parameter has been used in the time domain calculation of the output pulse giving good accordance with the desired THz pulse. The prototype has been fabricated with gold metallization on HR-Si substrate by e-beam lithography and lift-off process. A downscaled version with spectral content up to 0.3 THz is also fabricated and measured validating each component of the system. © 2014 European Microwave Association.

In this work, we report the outcomes from the IUPUI STEM outreach program “STEMCorp” that inspires high school students to pursue STEM majors. The STEMCorp program was modeled after the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Initiative (MURI) at IUPUI. MURI research program introduces undergraduate students from at least two different departments with mentors from different disciplines to address research issues that may compose both engineering and sciences. The STEMCorp program brings undergraduate students to work with faculty and high school teachers to create a positive impact in enriching the high school students by introducing them to engineering and science with emphasis on nanotechnology for future careers. The program describes the collaborative activities between faculty, undergraduate students and high school STEM teachers in the creation of project-based, student-centered learning modules in the field of nanotechnology. The paper details the activities of the STEMCorp participants including their experiences in developing working partnerships and creating and implementing learning modules in the designated high school courses. The success of the program is assessed by the measurable outcomes of high school students' research projects. Specifically, two different learning modules are presented, including the processes used in the development of these modules and their outcomes. The collaborative research discussions between the faculty, undergraduate students, and high school teachers are detailed, covering research methodologies, hypothesis, and expected outcomes.

An induction theorem-inspired approach is adopted for the design of a Huygens source nanoparticle laser. The proposed nanoparticle consists of a three-layer silicon-silver-silicon (Si-Ag-Si) concentric sphere, which enables the amplified and balanced excitation of the electric and magnetic dipole modes with scattering efficiencies in excess of 600. Moreover, with its dipolar modes designed to be in balance, its scattering directivity pattern is an almost perfect replica of the cardioid radiation pattern of a Huygens source, featuring D scat = 3 in the forward direction and a null (D scat ≃ 0) in the backward direction. Innovative electromagnetic force manipulation and trapping effects that are empowered with Huygens source nanoparticle lasers are considered.

The integration of bulk solar and wind generation into the electric power network of Puerto Rico introduces new operational and economic challenges. When local atmospheric conditions deteriorates and causes unexpected mismatches in short-term forecasts, the electric network will be subjected to strong active power ramp events that online generation units may not be able to support and manage. Uncertainties in the variability of the net-load prediction may result in over-commitment of rapid-response resources. Additionally, from the perspective of a variable generation developer, these events may increase the chances of curtailment. Thus, quantifying the intensity and frequency of these events in a spatial-temporal framework, and evaluating its interaction with electricity demand, should provide a better understanding of the impact that bulk intermittent generation will have on the rest of the existing generation portfolio of the island. Characterizing the variability of solar and wind ramp events in Puerto Rico, and its effect on the power system capability to adapt, is the main scope of this investigation. By synthesizing solar radiation and wind speed data sets, a one-year renewable energy time series was re-created by means of Markov Chain Processes. The spatial-temporal characteristics of solar and wind energy ramp events in the island were evaluated and the impact of these events on the existing inter-hour requirements was quantified for the 12%, 15% and 20% yearly renewable generation targets. Results have shown that predictable ramp events will create most of the challenges at sunset, mostly due to the fact that intermittent generation will ramp down continuously as electricity demand increases. Meanwhile, for the 15% and 20% targets, VG will be detrimental during off-peak hours, when base-load units are expected to be committed to their minimum operational limits.

The characteristics of the retinal vascular network have been prospectively associated with many systemic and vascular diseases. QUARTZ is a fully automated software that has been developed to localize and quantify the morphological characteristics of blood vessels in retinal images for use in epidemiological studies. This software was used to analyse a dataset containing 16,000 retinal images from the EPIC-Norfolk cohort study. The objective of this paper is to both assess the suitability of this dataset for computational analysis and to further evaluate the QUARTZ software.

In this paper we present research adapting a state of the art condition-invariant robotic place recognition algorithm to the role of automated inter- and intra-image alignment of sensor observations of environmental and skin change over time. The approach involves inverting the typical criteria placed upon navigation algorithms in robotics;we exploit rather than attempt to fix the limited camera viewpoint invariance of such algorithms, showing that approximate viewpoint repetition is realistic in a wide range of environments and medical applications. We demonstrate the algorithms automatically aligning challenging visual data from a range of real-world applications: ecological monitoring of environmental change, aerial observation of natural disasters including flooding, tsunamis and bushfires and tracking wound recovery and sun damage over time and present a prototype active guidance system for enforcing viewpoint repetition. We hope to provide an interesting case study for how traditional research criteria in robotics can be inverted to provide useful outcomes in applied situations.

This paper is based on the dynamic optimization methodology to investigate the economic energy efficiency issues in developing countries. The paper introduces some definitions about energy efficiency both in economics and physics, and establishes a quantitative way for measuring the economic energy efficiency. The linkage among economic energy efficiency, energy consumption and other macroeconomic variables is demonstrated primarily. Using the methodology of dynamic optimization, a maximum problem of economic energy efficiency over time, which is subjected to the extended Solow growth model and instantaneous investment rate, is modeled. In this model, the energy consumption is set as a control variable and the capital is regarded as a state variable. The analytic solutions can be derived and the diagrammatic analysis provides saddle-point equilibrium. A numerical simulation is also presented;meanwhile, the optimal paths of investment and energy consumption can be drawn. The dynamic optimization encourages governments in developing countries to pursue higher economic energy efficiency by controlling the energy consumption and regulating the investment state as it can conserve energy without influencing the achievement of steady state in terms of Solow model. If that, a sustainable development will be achieved. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Automatic license plate detection(ALPD) is to detect sedan license plate information from an image or a sequence of recorded images. ALPD has many important applications, such as highway traffic monitor system, highway speeding monitor system. ASLPD as a real life application has to be a quickly and successfully process license plates under different environmental conditions, such as indoors, outdoors, day or night time. In this paper, we present a novel and fast detection method of the sedan license plate taken from anterior orientation. This method has a 96.1% success rate for detecting sedan license plate correctly. Our method is efficient and allows for completely automatic detection of sedan license plate.

Cascading failures are the typical reasons of blackouts in power grids. The grid topology plays an important role in determining the dynamics of cascading failures in power grids. Measures for vulnerability analysis are crucial to assure a higher level of robustness of power grids. Metrics from Complex Networks are widely used to investigate the grid vulnerability. Yet, these purely topological metrics fail to capture the real behaviour of power grids. This paper proposes a metric, the effective graph resistance, as a vulnerability measure to determine the critical components in a power grid. Differently than the existing purely topological measures, the effective graph resistance accounts for the electrical properties of power grids such as power flow allocation according to Kirchoff laws. To demonstrate the applicability of the effective graph resistance, a quantitative vulnerability assessment of the IEEE 118 buses power system is performed. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the effective graph resistance to identify the critical transmission lines in a power grid.
