A contemporary governance challenge for governments concerns the biogas domain: what incentives and policies can lead to a viable biogas economy? To support addressing this challenge, a prototype of a simulator is constructed in which horizontal governance is applied in a multi-stakeholder context. This paper reports on the modelling and knowledge acquisition that led to the development of that prototype. Rather than (re)inventing tooling, three available agent-based modelling approaches are combined: the MAIA meta-model, OperA and GENIUS, with Agents cape as the agent-based middleware for the realisation of the simulator. The resulting simulator has been validated by biogas experts from Alliander (NL-based energy network company), leading to confirmation that our combined approach was useful for the analysis of this multi-stakeholder domain.

In this work, a pulse shaper in coplanar technology intended for the unlicensed band up to the THz region is designed, fabricated, and measured. This broadband frequency range is of great interests as it offers very high data rate communication in local area networks. The technique employs tailored coplanar lines that have been designed using an exact analytical series solution of the synthesis problem derived from the coupled-mode theory. The frequency response of the pulse-shaping device introduced in the synthesis method depends on the spectrum of the applied THz impulse generator, application-dependent devices (e.g. antenna) with known responses, and desired THz output response. Here, the desired output pulse is a combination of Hermite polynomials with 5 ps of temporal duration. The designed device has been simulated in the frequency domain and the obtained result of the S11 parameter has been used in the time domain calculation of the output pulse giving good accordance with the desired THz pulse. The prototype has been fabricated with gold metallization on HR-Si substrate by e-beam lithography and lift-off process. A downscaled version with spectral content up to 0.3 THz is also fabricated and measured validating each component of the system.

Dental fluorosis occurs in many parts of the world because of highly exposure to high concentration of fluoride in the teeth development stage. To help the health policy makers developing the prevention and treatment plans, a manual or automatic image-based dental fluorosis classification system is needed. In this paper, we develop an automatic dental fluorosis classification system using multi-prototypes derived from the fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm. The values from red, green, blue, hue, saturation, and intensity channels are utilized as features in the algorithm. We also set the dental fluorosis classification criteria from the amount of pixels belonging to each class. We found that the pixel correct classification rate is around 92% on the training data set and around 90% on the blind test data set when comparing the results with two experts. Three out of seven images in the training data set and eight out of fifteen images in the blind test data set are correctly classified into dental fluorosis classes.

This paper addresses the problem of flood detection from the cloud-contaminated MODIS time-series data. Although MODIS data can provide almost daily coverage over the large area with the medium resolution. The use of MODIS data for flood mapping in the tropical regions is a challenging task due to the cloud contamination. Since the floods usually occur in the connected regions over a certain period of time, we employed the Markov random field model to characterize this property. For our experiments, the classification accuracy of flooded and non-flooded areas can be significantly increased by incorporating the MRF model.

Modeling and simulating of pedestrians movement have attracted much attention because they provide reproducible results, which are important to evaluate evacuation facilities and risks. It is well accepted the movement of individuals is affected by interactions with others and the environment. However, factors affecting the interactions are not fully studied and experiments are needed. This paper studies the impact of speeds on how pedestrians respond to obstacles, i.e., avoid collisions. Experiments were conducted in which participants were instructed to perform collision avoidance tasks with obstacles at two levels of both normal and high speeds. The avoidance tasks include avoiding collisions by stopping at or bypassing obstacles. Trajectories of participants were extracted from video recordings. How speed affects (1) the timing and magnitude of the deceleration of participants stopping at obstacles; (2) and the minimum distance to obstacles for participants bypassing obstacles were studied. It is concluded that speed significantly affects participants' collision avoidance: compared with participants at the normal speed, participants at the high speed start to stop further away from obstacles with higher deceleration when stopping at obstacles; and they need more space when bypassing obstacles. Results of the experiments are now being used to refine pedestrian models.

This paper proposes the design and implementation of a low-cost, low-power and scalable intelligent health monitoring system, e-Guardian, to help the lone elderly live independently. The heart of the system is a base station (BS) that acts as a gateway between cellular network and wireless sensor network (WSN). At seniors' sides are a number of wearable devices (WDs) which are capable of detecting accidental falls, inferring simple activities of daily livings (ADLs), monitoring body temperatures and possibly heart rates, etc. WDs communicate with BS, probably in several hops via range extenders (REs). During an emergency, alert signals will be sent to family members either via SMS or phone call. As data from all WDs aggregates at BS, network congestion will likely occur if every WD sends out massive data. To avoid this, e-Guardian takes a decentralized approach by processing sensor data locally in WDs instead of streaming raw sensor data to BS for processing. An interrupt-driven fall detection algorithm using a digital microelectromechanical system (MEMS) accelerometer has been designed to allow host microcontroller units (MCUs) to process data only upon interrupts and sleep the rest of the time, thus achieving months of standby time. The system consumes very little bandwidth so it can scale easily. The scalability allows e-Guardian to be deployed in not only households but also care centres, hospitals and even entire village/community areas.
