Distribution-level PV farms with peak power capacity on the order of 0.5 MW to 2 MW are an attractive way for utilities to meet increasingly aggressive renewable portfolio standards. Although attractive in many ways, these plants are more susceptible than others to cloud-driven high-frequency intermittency. To overcome PV intermittency, and to make such systems more dispatchable, battery systems have been deployed to operate in parallel with the PV array. The joint operation of the PV array and the battery produces a power output which tracks the PV array output averaged over a moving window. It is shown here that even a fairly short window (on the order of four minues) is adequate to produce a smooth power output. It is also shown that by using a sliding window centered on real time, rather than a window trailing real time, the total energy released and absorbed by the battery can be reduced by a factor of five, with the effect of reducing battery size and / or extending its life. A method to capture detailed images of clouds in the vicinity of the sun with low-cost digital cameras is demonstrated experimentally. These images can then be processed using a neural network approach that is both accurate and computationally efficient. Specifically, a Lateral Adaptive Priming Adaptive Resonance Theory architecture is used to predict solar irradiance one minute ahead based on data extracted from an image at the present time. Steps necessary to turn this preliminary research into an inexpensive prediction tool for medium-scale PV farms with battery storage are outlined.

This paper is a work in progress that examines current consumer engagement with eHealth information through Smartphones or tablets. We focus on three activity types: seeking, posting and `other' engagement activity and compare two age groups, 25-40s and over 40-50s. Findings show that around 30% of the younger age group is engaging with Government and other Health providers' websites, receiving eHealth emails, and reading other people's comments about health related issues in online discussion groups/websites/blog. Approximately 20% engage with Government and other Health providers social media, watch or listen to audio or video podcasts. For the older age group, their most active engagement with eHealth information is in the seeking category through Government or other health websites (approximately 15%), and less than 10% for social media sites. Their posting activity is less than 5%. Other activities show that less than 15% of the older age group engages through receiving emails and reading blogs, less than 10% watch or listen to podcasts, and their online consulting activity is less than 7%. We note that scores are low for both groups in terms of engaging with eHealth information through Twitter.

Fractal dimensions (FDs) are frequently used for summarizing the complexity of retinal vascular. However, previous techniques on this topic were not zone specific. A new methodology to measure FD of a specific zone in retinal images has been developed and tested as a marker for stroke prediction. Higuchi's fractal dimension was measured in circumferential direction (FDC) with respect to optic disk (OD), in three concentric regions between OD boundary and 1.5 OD diameter from its margin. The significance of its association with future episode of stroke event was tested using the Blue Mountain Eye Study (BMES) database and compared against spectrum fractal dimension (SFD) and box-counting (BC) dimension. Kruskal-Wallis analysis revealed FDC as a better predictor of stroke (H=5.80, P=0.016, α=0.05) compared with SFD (H=0.51, P=0.475, α=0.05) and BC (H=0.41, P=0.520, α=0.05) with overall lower median value for the cases compared to the control group. This work has shown that there is a significant association between zone specific FDC of eye fundus images with future episode of stroke while this difference is not significant when other FD methods are employed. © 2014 Behzad Aliahmad et al.

This paper recognizes that the large resistance to reactance line ratio in distribution systems may create strong coupling between real and reactive power dynamics. To model this coupling, a new coupled real-power voltage dynamic model for future distribution energy systems with a large penetration of distributed generation (DG) units is derived. The proposed dynamic model offers an intuitive physical insight into the interaction between the electromechanical and electromagnetic phenomena. This model, furthermore, provides a better understanding of the decentralized nature of distribution energy systems where each DG represents a sub-system of the whole system. The theoretical findings are applied to investigate the small-signal stability of a real-world distribution system on the island of Flores. The results indicate that if the primary control of DGs are designed based on the decoupled model, frequency and voltage stability problems may occur in distribution systems. © 2012 IEEE.

Modeling is going to play a crucial role for utilities as Electric Vehicle (EV) ownership percentage increases. Utilities anticipate new demand peaks due to EV charging loads, particularly at high penetration levels. Several efforts in the utility industry have been using a demographic approach to find potentially worst overloaded distribution infrastructure and use these locations as test beds. This paper will demonstrate the methodology used in the demographics study to identify areas of interest for urban New Mexico feeders. Using existing infrastructure with real utility GIS data, several leading modeling tools were used to identify possible long-term and short-term outcomes. Using the demographic results, system- and component-specific analysis, an impact study will identify potential impacts and mitigation opportunities. The impact analysis methodology described in this paper will identify short term and long term impacts on voltage issues, protection, Power Quality, Loading, and Control. Through modeling results, data integrity gaps, generic to other utilities can also be identified. Other methods of modeling described in this paper will use Synergee (modeling tool developed by GL Group) as a baseline to simulate the EV penetration and correlate that with other Distributed Energy Resources such as PV. General conclusions will be made based on the results of the impact study. The conclusions will be used to identify business-case opportunities such as DR, TOU and possibly V2G. The modeling efforts will also support and identify gaps in modeling software in the utility and data integrity to have real time data for distribution planning for short term and long term impacts of all DERs.

A Smart Grid demonstration project is currently underway at public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM). This project is designed to combine a battery storage system with a photovataic (PV) system to smooth out the cloud induced intermittency of PV output. The whole system is already in use and the smoothing algorithm successfully smoothes the PV output as designed. This paper introduces the structure of the system, and discusses how to design the smoothing algorithm in five aspects, including choosing the smoothing reference as well as choosing the window size of smoothing algorithm. Specifically this paper puts forward a new method to recover the state of charge (SoC) of the battery while performing intermittency mitigation.

An important contribution of the Semantic Web is a new format of data representation called Resource Description Framework (RDF). In RDF, every piece of information is represented as a triple: subject-property-object. In general, subjects and objects can be shared between multiple RDF triples, and all triples can constitute a densely interlinked network. RDF becomes a very popular format of representing data on the web. As of September 2012, the last available data, more than 31 billions of triples exist on the web. In the paper, we propose a system - called T2R - for automatic acquisition of syntactic and semantic relations among terms from a plain text. These relations are expressed in the form of RDF triples. The proposed method is independent of any prior knowledge and domain specific patterns, and is applicable to any textual resources. The system implementing the approach is capable of identifying grammatical structure of an input sentence and analysing its semantics to generate meaningful RDF triples. We evaluate this approach by proving the quality of our results through case studies.

Increased penetration of renewable generation and the liberalization of electricity markets result in increasingly varying power flows in the electric power system. This has led to increased occurrences of congestions which are mostly resolved by dispatching generation in an economically suboptimal way. In this paper, we use power flow control to render the system more flexible by providing the capability of rerouting power to lines where sufficient capacity is available. The objective is to minimize a combination of generation cost and a risk-based security index as opposed to formulating a traditional security constrained economic dispatch. In addition, corrective actions by the power flow control devices are used to allow for a less conservative generation dispatch resulting in reduced generation costs while maintaining system security in case of a contingency. Simulation results provide insights into the benefits provided by corrective power flow control in such a trade-off between generation cost and system risk.

A ray-tracing technique to predict the propagation channel parameters in indoor scenarios is presented. An analysis of the physical radio channel propagation inside a van full of buckets is presented. The propagation model is a deterministic technique, based on 3D ray launching. The results show the dependence of the scenario in the performance of the system, revealing that the consideration of the topology of the wireless system prior to deployment leads to an optimal final configuration. © 2012 IEEE.
