Each detector on a multi-headed gamma camera can be equipped with parallel-beam (PBC) or cone-beam collimators (CBC). While PBC can provide truncation-free SPECT projection sets, CBC offers increased sensitivity in a limited field-of-view (FOV). Combined PBC and CBC SPECT data acquisition may allow increased sensitivity within CBC FOV with significantly reduced truncation artifacts in the reconstructed images. In this paper the combined CBC&PBC SPECT method is evaluated using synthetic and experimental data. We envision application of CBC&PBC SPECT in scintimammography.

This paper presents studies carried out on the Hellenic system in order to assess the effect of the existence of only one main interconnection with the rest Balkan system, the Bulgaria interconnection. The dynamic behavior is analyzed for selected disturbances and shows that for large generation loss in the Greek network there is isolation of the Greek system, due to the short activation time of the Bulgaria overload protective device. In this case load shedding is necessary for safety reasons. In general it is concluded that the Greek system remains stable, even in large disturbances.

The dynamic nature of high-speed networks poses difficult traffic control problems when trying to achieve efficient use of network resources. To cope with rapidly changing network conditions, traffic control methods for high-speed networks must be adaptive, flexible and intelligent for efficient network management. The use of intelligent methods based on fuzzy logic, neural networks and genetic algorithms can prove to be efficient for such traffic control. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy equivalent capacity estimator for bandwidth allocation in high-speed networks. Performance evaluation via simulation shows that the proposed fuzzy estimator has a good equivalent capacity estimation compared with fluid flow and stationary approximations.

In actual mobile communication networks, the users' locations, the number of mobile communication users, and their behavior change depending on the time zone. This dependency affects the cell traffic; thus, the allocation of base stations (BSs) in the service area is an important problem to be investigated. In this paper we propose a new model for allocation of BSs in mobile communication networks, taking account of user distribution, user movement, channel occupancy, and handover. On the basis of this model, we develop a simulation system and carried out many simulations to evaluate the system performance. For simulations, we consider the actual location of the road network and the population distribution in Yamagata City, Japan. We carried out many simulations for various scenarios and parameters. The performance evaluation shows that our simulation system makes a good BS allocation.

In this paper we explore different strategies to guide backpropagation algorithm used for training artificial neural networks. Two different variants of steepest descent-based backpropagation algorithm, and four different variants of conjugate gradient algorithm are tested. The variants differ whether or not the time component is used, and whether or not additional gradient information is utilized during one-dimensional optimization. Testing is performed on randomly generated data as well as on some benchmark data regarding energy prediction. Based on our test results, it appears that the most promissing backpropagation strategy is to initially use steepest descent algorithm, and then continue with conjugate gradient algorithm. The backpropagation through time strategy combined with conjugate gradients appears to be promissing as well.

In ATM networks, traffic control design is major challenge because of the diverse services and the need for efficient network resource engineering. To cope with rapidly changing network conditions, traffic control methods for high speed networks must be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent for efficient network management. The use of intelligent algorithms based on fuzzy logic, neural networks and genetic algorithms can be efficient for traffic control in ATM networks. We propose a routing scheme which is based on fuzzy logic. The proposed scheme of routing the tagged cells can improve network utilization. Performance evaluation via simulations shows that the DPFC decision is very close to the ideal decision. The DPFC and FRM were able to send to the destination node 31% and 54% of tagged cells, respectively.
