Learning Communities, a growing initiative at Iowa State University, aid freshmen in the transition to college life as students live in the same residence hall and attend a common block of classes. By combining learning communities with the concept of student-centered active learning, students will gain control of and adjust more quickly to their new environment, experience increased achievement, and persist in the program. First year computer engineering students involved in the learning community participated in two new courses during the 1999/2000 academic year. The new courses were framed within the context of active learning to better prepare students for continuation in computer engineering by increasing their skills in group work and providing essential life-long learning skills. Students completed their freshman year with a greater awareness of complete, engineering, knowledge and skills for successful teamwork, and experience a quicker and more satisfying acclimation to the university and college life. The goal of project SUCCESS is 'to provide every student interested in computer engineering an opportunity, to succeed Iowa State University and to prepare him or her for their future careers." engineering students take an academically challenging program of study beginning with rigorous courses in calculus, chemistry, and physics during their freshman year. While these courses are essential for providing a foundation upon which all engineering programs are based, many students find the courses difficult and elect not to continue their study of engineering. Project SUCCESS is an effort to help students survive the demands placed upon them as freshmen by providing a collaborative environment in which they will learn to seek assistance from and provide support to peers.

The deregulation of the electric power industry in Europe is the major issue nowadays. The new environment raises questions concerning all sectors of the electric power industry. Nevertheless, the transmission system is the key point in market development since it puts constraints to the market operation due to technical requirements. Especially, in systems having weak connections among areas, congestion problems arise due to line overloading or to voltage security requirements. This paper focuses on topics concerning voltage security in a deregulated power market and related market issues. Results by the application of the proposed methodology in the Greek Electric Power System (EPS) are presented.

Due to problems caused to electronic devices, fed by 220V auxiliary circuit in a 400kV substation of the Greek H.V. interconnected system, extensive measurements of overvoltages have been performed, correlated with the timing of switching operations in the primary circuit of 400kV. The investigated cases were the opening of incoming circuit breaker, the closing of coupling circuit breaker between bus-bars, the opening and closing of the circuit breaker of a reactor and the simultaneous opening of two coupling circuit breakers. The waveforms of the Overvoltages recorded between phase and neutral had duration of about 100 - 200ps and a decaying oscillation of about S O O W , while their creast values were up to 6.4kV. The overrvoltages recorded between neutral and earth had values only up to 200V.

Power System Restoration following a system collapse, is a difficult and multi-faceted problem. A wide variety of control actions has to be performed on time, while constraints such as power balance and system stability have to be carefully respected, The application of dynamic simulation software in studying various transients during the restoration phase of Crete, the largest island of Greece, is presented. Simulation results covering distinct steps of the restoration procedures are displayed. Further, the presence of negative sequence currents due to transmission line asymmetry is investigated. These currents under light-load conditions and during restoration have been suspected of preventing synchronisation of start-up generators.

Model checking can tell us whether a system is correct;probabilistic model checking can also tell us whether a system is timely and reliable. Moreover, probabilistic model checking allows one to verify properties that may not be true with probability one, but may still hold with an acceptable probability. The challenge in developing a probabilistic model checker able to handle realistic systems is the construction of the state space and the necessity to solve huge systems of linear equations. To address this problem, we have developed ProbVerus, a tool for the formal verification of probabilistic real-time systems. ProbVerus is an implementation of probabilistic computation tree logic (PCTL) model checking using symbolic techniques. We present ProbVerus, demonstrate its use with a simple manufacturing example, and report the current status of the tool. With ProbVerus, we have been able to analyze, within minutes, the safety logic of a railway interlocking controller with 1027 states. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

engineering LEA/RN/sup TM/ is a new faculty development program offered by the College of engineering at Kansas State University, USA. A group of twenty-five faculty members is about to complete the first year of the program. The group has studied student-centered learning, active learning techniques, active learning lesson planning, and selected topics in learning theory during four-hour time blocks once per month. Base groups of faculty members have also met to continue studying between the monthly meetings. By learning about learning, the faculty members have re-examined their college classrooms and applied much of their learned knowledge within their courses. This paper outlines engineering LEA/RN/sup TM/ and provides faculty feedback about the program and the successes and failures witnessed in the classroom.

In this paper, we describe a collaborative system specifically designed to address problems faced by distributed (or virtual) teams. TeamSCOPE (Team Software for a Collaborative Project Environment) is a web-based work environment that has emerged from a research project studying the communication needs of internationally distributed engineering design teams. The paper begins by outlining some of the needs of virtual teams. An integrative framework that focuses on facilitation of group members' awareness of group activities, communications and resources is proposed. These needs and awareness requirements are then translated into a set of collaborative system design goals which have guided the implementation of TeamSCOPE. The features of TeamSCOPE are briefly reviewed, and some preliminary observations from early users are provided. We conclude by noting some of the new features planned for TeamSCOPE based on our early trials.

Near-field Scanning Optical Microscopy has been used to measure internal optical modes in channel waveguides and ring resonators. The period of the observed standing modes is a direct measure of the effective index.
