The increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into medical diagnostics necessitates a critical examination of its ethical and practical implications. While the prioritization of diagnostic accuracy, as advocated by Sabuncu et al. (2025), is essential, this approach risks oversimplifying complex socio-ethical issues, including fairness, privacy, and intersectionality. This rebuttal emphasizes the dangers of reducing multifaceted health disparities to quantifiable metrics and advocates for a more transdisciplinary approach. By incorporating insights from social sciences, ethics, and public health, AI systems can address the compounded effects of intersecting identities and safeguard sensitive data. Additionally, explainability and interpretability must be central to AI design, fostering trust and accountability. This paper calls for a framework that balances accuracy with fairness, privacy, and inclusivity to ensure AI-driven diagnostics serve diverse populations equitably and ethically. © 2025, CC BY.

This paper presents the first 3D Virtual Service Center of National Telecom public Company Limited (NT), Thailand. The major aims of constructing the digital twin of the service center at the headquarters are to provide customers with new engaging and immersive experiences and to decrease excessive work for employees in the service center. The virtual service center includes features such as an interactive learning simulation of service procedures, demonstrations of the products with animated guidance, and live chat support for realtime communication with NT staff. The preliminary qualitative survey was conducted with undergraduate students at Chulalongkorn University. The feedback has been positive, which includes the immersive quality of the virtual environment, the ease of navigation, the quality of social interaction, and the well-executed. This comprehensive strategy offers a novel and captivating way for customers to engage with the business while also improving customer understanding and service center efficiency.

The challenge of accurately ripeness level classifying from fresh oil palm fruit, this research investigated the problems and methods that were used in ripeness level classification. The goal of this research is to present a method for classifying the ripeness levels of oil palm fruits using deep learning techniques applied to image data. This research applies a deep learning model for classifying the ripeness level of fresh oil palm fruit and aiming for real-time application or mobile usage. The proposed model, Yolov9n (nano), adapts principles from convolutional neural networks that was tuned the learning parameters consist of the Adam optimizer, a learning rate of 0.001, and a batch size of 32, result in the most accurate ripeness level classification model. The research demonstrates the Yolov9n (nano) improved model with optimized parameters to achieve the highest accuracy. Training and validation datasets represent precision of 99.4%, recall of 99.6%, mean average precision at 50% (mAP50) of 99.5%, and mAP50-95 of 92.6%. These findings confirm the model’s effectiveness in accurately classifying the ripeness level of oil palm fruit from images. The study provides guidance for the practical deep learning implementation of ripeness level classification on fresh oil palm imaging for efficient harvesting by farmers cultivating oil palm.

VERVE: Template-based ReflectiVE Rewriting for MotiVational IntErviewing

Reflective listening is a fundamental skill that counselors must acquire to achieve proficiency in motivational interviewing (MI). It involves responding in a manner that acknowledges and explores the meaning of what the client has expressed in the conversation. In this work, we introduce the task of counseling response rewriting, which transforms non-reflective statements into reflective responses. We introduce VERVE, a template-based rewriting system with paraphrase-augmented training and adaptive template updating. VERVE first creates a template by identifying and filtering out tokens that are not relevant to reflections and constructs a reflective response using the template. Paraphrase-augmented training allows the model to learn less-strict fillings of masked spans, and adaptive template updating helps discover effective templates for rewriting without significantly removing the original content. Using both automatic and human evaluations, we compare our method against text rewriting baselines and show that our framework is effective in turning non-reflective statements into more reflective responses while achieving a good content preservation-reflection style trade-off. © 2023, CC BY.

Electrostatic Precipitation (ESP) is an effective method of removing particulates from the air. It is currently used in many large-scale industrial applications but sees limited use in smaller-scale cases due to the difficulty of generating high voltage in small packages. Additionally, safety concerns prevent the widespread use of this effective technique. This paper presents the motivation, design, and evaluation of a miniature high-voltage DC (HVDC) power supply for applications in small-scale ESP systems. The power supply’s potential for portable ESP application is tested on a personal protective device, the so-called Smart, Individualized, Noncontact, Extended-Wear (SINEW) mask. The results show that the power supply operates with acceptable efficiency and generates high voltages and power necessary to drive ESP setups in practical applications.

Social care robots are increasingly used in health care. As the autonomy of these machines continues to increase, they will likely require some capacity for ethical reasoning. Current efforts to imbue robots with ethical decision-making capabilities tend to assume that people perceive robots and human actors as ethically equivalent entities. That is, it is assumed that the ethical behavior of a robot can be modeled based on what is considered ethical human behavior. Despite its ubiquity, this assumption is a hypothesis that warrants empirical investigation. In this article, we partially replicate earlier work that tested this hypothesis. We run two online experiments assessing the ethical equivalence of robots and humans. In addition, we present a new analysis of the data of as reported by Hidalgo et al. (How Humans Judge Machines, MIT Press, 2021). We compare the current (and previous) data with these authors’ work to summarize the tenability of the ethical equivalence hypothesis. Generally, respondents tend to rate robot actions as slightly less ethical than those performed by humans. However, the differences are minor and depend on the scenario. Therefore, we conclude that people treat humans and robots as nearly ethically equivalent. This implies that ethical rules for robots can be derived from existing frameworks and guidelines to regulate human behaviors.

From Lab to Field: Real-World Evaluation of an AI-Driven Smart Video Solution to Enhance Community Safety

This article adopts and evaluates an AI-enabled Smart Video Solution (SVS) designed to enhance safety in the real world. The system integrates with existing infrastructure camera networks, leveraging recent advancements in AI for easy adoption. Prioritizing privacy and ethical standards, pose based data is used for downstream AI tasks such as anomaly detection. Cloud-based infrastructure and mobile app are deployed, enabling real-time alerts within communities. The SVS employs innovative data representation and visualization techniques, such as the Occupancy Indicator, Statistical Anomaly Detection, Bird’s Eye View, and Heatmaps, to understand pedestrian behaviors and enhance public safety. Evaluation of the SVS demonstrates its capacity to convert complex computer vision outputs into actionable insights for stakeholders, community partners, law enforcement, urban planners, and social scientists. This article presents a comprehensive real-world deployment and evaluation of the SVS, implemented in a community college environment across 16 cameras. The system integrates AI-driven visual processing, supported by statistical analysis, database management, cloud communication, and user notifications. Additionally, the article evaluates the end-to-end latency from the moment an AI algorithm detects anomalous behavior in real-time at the camera level to the time stakeholders receive a notification. The results demonstrate the system’s robustness, effectively managing 16 CCTV cameras with a consistent throughput of 16.5 frames per second (FPS) over a 21-hour period and an average end-to-end latency of 26.76 seconds between anomaly detection and alert issuance. No two snowflakes are alike. However, they can be classified into over a hundred different categories based on their geometry. Recent developments in machine learning algorithms have led to the possibility of automatically classifying more classes of snowflakes more accurately and efficiently. We present supervised and unsupervised learning approaches to snowflake classification coupled with dimensional reduction techniques. Proper automatic and detailed classification of ice and snow hydrometeors enables advanced characterization of geometrical, microphysical, and scattering properties of particles, which, in turn, is essential for development of radar-based quantitative precipitation estimation of snow.

Awareness of neurodiversity in higher education is at the rise but institutions struggle to set up comprehensive frameworks that can effectively accommodate neurodivergent students. This deficiency undercuts attempts to establish inclusive learning settings, leaving students to deal with issues like academic stress, social isolation, and a lack of resources. This study peruse creative ways to bridge this gap by using technology to promote inclusivity, facilitate communication, and improve the accommodation process. We created an app prototype using a human-centered design methodology with the goals of raising awareness, easing accommodations, and boosting faculty-student communication. The findings provide beneficial data for educators, policymakers, and developers intending to use technology to build supportive and equitable learning environments.
