Energy transition aims to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions. Policies that promote renewable energy and the electricity market design influence energy transition at a countrywide level. policy instruments include feed-in tariffs (FITs) and renewable portfolio standards (RPSs) that have been adopted worldwide. FITs and RPSs function by guaranteeing a fixed price and setting a minimum amount of renewable energy. In addition to policies, the electricity market affects the promotion of renewable energy, with which electricity markets are classified into regulated and deregulated markets. Compared to a regulated market, a deregulated market is more likely to provoke competition between suppliers, which is propitious for developing renewable energy. This article covers the following topics: (1) the effects of government policies on energy transition; (2) how different types of electricity markets work and their potential to promote the use of green electricity; and (3) a case study of an electricity market, in which policy instruments were used to encourage green electricity, and efforts paid by the government and citizens towards an energy generation profile of less emission and more renewable electricity.

Background Premature coronary artery disease (PCAD) refers to the early onset of the disease, usually before the age of 55 for men and 65 for women. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) develops when coronary arteries, the major blood vessels supplying the heart with blood, oxygen, and nutrients, become clogged or diseased. This is often due to many risk factors, including lifestyle and cardiometabolic ones, but few studies were done on ethnicity as one of these risk factors, especially in PCAD. Method In this study, we tested the rank of ethnicity among the major risk factors of PCAD, including age, gender, body mass index (BMI), visceral obesity presented as waist circumference (WC), diabetes mellitus (DM), high blood pressure (HBP), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and smoking in a large national sample of patients with PCAD from different ethnicities. All patients who met the age criteria underwent coronary angiography to confirm CAD diagnosis. The weight of ethnicity was compared to the other eight features using feature weighting algorithms in PCAD diagnosis. In addition, we conducted an experiment where we ran predictive models (classification algorithms) to predict PCAD. We compared the performance of these models under two conditions: we trained the classification algorithms, including or excluding ethnicity. Result This study analyzed various factors to determine their predictive power influencing PCAD prediction. Among these factors, gender and age were the most significant predictors, with ethnicity being the third most important. The results also showed that if ethnicity is used as one of the input risk factors for classification algorithms, it can improve their efficiency. Conclusion Our results show that ethnicity ranks as an influential factor in predicting PCAD. Therefore, it needs to be addressed in the PCAD diagnostic and preventive measures. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

Background: High severity and case fatality rates among elderly dengue patients have become growing threats globally. Early recognition of severe dengue is crucial to saving ***: To evaluate the predictive factors leading to severe dengue in elderly patients, we enrolled 1,728 laboratory-confirmed dengue cases [including 267 severe (15.5%) and 1461 mild cases] from southern Taiwan: (1) two community hospitals and one tertiary medical center in 2015 outbreak in Tainan and (2) another medical center during outbreaks from 2002-2013 in Kaohsiung. Among these, 606 (35.1%) patients were elderly (≥ 65 years). The individual’s clinical symptoms/signs and laboratory findings of dengue were retrospectively collected from chart reviews. Data analyses were run using both epidemiological and machine learning approaches. We further applied the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) to solve the imbalance between severe and non-severe cases. Then, we used a random forest model to select essential features to differentiate between the clinical manifestations of severe and mild ***: Our model using triage symptoms in the elderly and non-elderly achieved 97% accuracy in training and 95% accuracy in testing on predicting severe dengue. Hemorrhage ranked the highest symptom in predicting severe dengue. Fever was important for diagnosing severe dengue in the elderly, whereas GI-related symptoms were significant for predicting severe dengue in the non-elderly. Introduction: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS), an FDA-approved therapy for chronic pain, uses paresthesia (low frequency SCS (LF-SCS)) or paresthesia-free (such as high-frequency SCS (HF-SCS)) systems, providing analgesia through partially-elucidated mechanisms, with recent studies indicating a sexual dimorphism in pain pathogenesis (Bretherton et al., Neuromodulation, 2021;Paller et al., Pain Med 10:289–299, 2009;Slyer et al., Neuromodulation, 2019;Van Buyten et al., Neuromodulation 20:642–649, 2017;Mekhail et al., Pain Pract, 2021). We aim to evaluate SCS therapy sex effects based on paradigm, utilizing visual analog scores (VAS), perceived pain reduction (PPR), and opioid use. Methods: A retrospective cohort study of SCS patients implanted between 2004 and 2020 (n = 237) was conducted. Descriptive statistics and linear mixed methods analyses were used. This paper investigates the theoretical and empirical performance of Fisher-Pitman-type permutation tests for assessing the equality of unknown Poisson mixture distributions. Building on nonparametric maximum likelihood estimators (NPMLEs) of the mixing distribution, these tests are theoretically shown to be able to adapt to complicated unspecified structures of count data and also consistent against their corresponding ANOVA-type alternatives;the latter is a result in parallel to classic claims made by Robinson (Robinson, 1973). The studied methods are then applied to a single-cell RNA-seq data obtained from different cell types from brain samples of autism subjects and healthy controls;empirically, they unveil genes that are differentially expressed between autism and control subjects yet are missed using common tests. For justifying their use, rate optimality of NPMLEs is also established in settings similar to nonparametric Gaussian (Wu and Yang, 2020a) and binomial mixtures (Tian et al., 2017;Vinayak et al., 2019). Translation is one of the most fundamental processes in the biological cell. Because of the central role that translation plays across all domains of life, the enzyme that carries out this process, the ribosome, is required to process information with high accuracy. This accuracy often approaches values near unity experimentally. In this paper, we model the ribosome as an information channel and demonstrate mathematically that this biological machine has information-processing capabilities that have not been recognized previously. In particular, we calculate bounds on the ribosome’s theoretical Shannon capacity and numerically approximate this capacity. Finally, by incorporating estimates on the ribosome’s operation time, we show that the ribosome operates at speeds safely below its capacity, allowing the ribosome to process information with an arbitrary degree of error. We address the performance analysis issue of the buffer-aided energy harvesting device-to-device communication system. A Coupled Processor Queuing Model with data packet and energy packet poisson arrival but interactive departure is proposed. The Quasi-Birth and Death method is adopted to obtain the steady state transition probability of proposed queuing model. Then the expressions of throughput, delay and packet drop rate for both data queue and energy queue are derived. policy makers are formulating offshore energy infrastructure plans, including wind turbines, electrolyzers, and HVDC transmission lines. An effective market design is crucial to guide cost-efficient investments and dispatch decisions. This paper jointly studies the impact of offshore market design choices on the investment in offshore electrolyzers and HVDC transmission capacity. We present a bilevel model that incorporates investments in offshore energy infrastructure, day-ahead market dispatch, and potential redispatch actions near real-time to ensure transmission constraints are respected. Our findings demonstrate that full nodal pricing, i.e., nodal pricing both onshore and offshore, outperforms the onshore zonal combined with offshore nodal pricing or offshore zonal layouts. While combining onshore zonal with offshore nodal pricing can be considered as a second-best option, it generally diminishes the profitability of offshore wind farms. However, if investment costs of offshore electrolyzers are relatively low, they can serve as catalysts to increase the revenues of the offshore wind farms. This study contributes to the understanding of market designs for highly interconnected offshore power systems, offering insights into the impact of congestion pricing methodologies on investment decisions. Besides, it is useful towards understanding the interaction of offshore loads like electrolyzers with financial support mechanisms for offshore wind farms. © 2024 IEEE.

Language models (LMs), including large language models (such as ChatGPT), have the potential to assist clinicians in generating various clinical notes. However, LMs are prone to produce "hallucinations", i.e., generated content that is not aligned with facts and knowledge. In this paper, we propose the Re3Writer method with retrieval-augmented generation and knowledge-grounded reasoning to enable LMs to generate faithful clinical texts. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in generating patient discharge instructions. It requires the LMs not to only understand the patients’ long clinical documents, i.e., the health records during hospitalization, but also to generate critical instructional information provided both to carers and to the patient at the time of discharge. The proposed Re3Writer imitates the working patterns of physicians to first retrieve related working experience from historical instructions written by physicians, then reason related medical knowledge. Finally, it refines the retrieved working experience and reasoned medical knowledge to extract useful information, which is used to generate the discharge instructions for previously-unseen patients. Our experiments show that, using our method, the performance of five representative LMs can be substantially boosted across all metrics. Meanwhile, we show results from human evaluations to measure the effectiveness in terms of fluency, faithfulness, and comprehensiveness. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.
