This paper presents a distributed transmission expansion planning (TEP) approach for multi-area power systems. A local TEP is formulated for each area with respect to local characteristics of that area as well as power flow in existing and candidate tie-lines that interconnect the area with its neighbors. Based on the auxiliary problem principle, a distributed decision-making algorithm is presented to coordinates the local TEP problems and find an overall solution for the entire power system. Limited information, only related to the tie-lines and not local lines, is exchanged between transmission areas, so that information privacy of the planners is respected. Numerical results on the Garver Test system show the effectiveness of the proposed distributed TEP algorithm.

Stair evacuation simulation based on cellular automata considering evacuees' walk preferences

As a physical model, the cellular automata （CA） model is widely used in many areas, such as stair evacuation. However, existing CA models do not consider evacuees＇ walk preferences nor psychological status, and the structure of the basic model is unapplicable for the stair structure. This paper is to improve the stair evacuation simulation by addressing these issues, and a new cellular automata model is established. Several evacuees＇ walk preference and how evacuee＇s psychology influences their behaviors are introduced into this model. Evacuees＇ speeds will be influenced by these features. To validate this simulation, two fire drills held in two high-rise buildings are video-recorded. It is found that the simulation results are similar to the fire drill results. The structure of this model is simple, and it is easy to further develop and utilize in different buildings with various kinds of occupants.

Planning the deployment of antennas in complex environments is a difficult task that requires the analysis of each specific scenario. In many cases, real measurements are taken so as to map signal strengths, interferences, and so on. However, taking real measurements is very time consuming and becomes impractical in complex, large scenarios. With the aim to avoid this burden, simulation techniques based on Ray Tracing, combining Geometric Optics and Uniform Theory of Diffraction, are used to predict waves' behaviour within a given environment. Those simulations depend on a number of parameters, namely angular resolution, number of rebounds, cells size, etc. By tuning these parameters, high-definition (HD) and low-definition (LD) results can be obtained. Although more practical than manual measurements, the computational cost of simulations in HD prevents their use in complex environments and their LD counterparts are applied. In this article we propose a technique based on collaborative filtering (CF) that allows the use of LD simulations (with low computational cost) by lessening their low quality problems. The proposed CF strategy exploits spacial constraints in 2D propagation planes to improve simulation results, which end up being very similar to those of HD, with a fraction of its computational cost. © 2016 IEEE.

Coastal flooding drives considerable risks to many communities, but projections of future flood risks are deeply uncertain. The paucity of observations of extreme events often motivates the use of statistical approaches to model the distribution of extreme storm surge events. One key deep uncertainty that is often overlooked is model structural uncertainty. There is currently no strong consensus among experts regarding which class of statistical model to use as a "best practice". Robust management of coastal flooding risks requires coastal managers to consider the distinct possibility of non-stationarity in storm surges. This increases the complexity of the potential models to use, which tends to increase the data required to constrain the model. Here, we use a Bayesian model averaging approach to analyze the balance between (i) model complexity sufficient to capture decision-relevant risks and (ii) data availability to constrain complex model structures. We characterize deep model structural uncertainty through a set of calibration experiments. Specifically, we calibrate a set of models ranging in complexity using long-term tide gauge observations from the Netherlands and the United States. We find that in both considered cases, roughly half of the model weight is associated with the non-stationary models. Our approach provides a formal framework to integrate information across model structures, in light of the potentially sizable modeling uncertainties. By combining information from multiple models, our inference sharpens for the projected storm surge 100-year return levels, and estimated return levels increase by several centimeters. We assess the impacts of data availability through a set of experiments with temporal subsets and model comparison metrics. Our analysis suggests that about 70 years of data are required to stabilize estimates of the 100-year return level, for the locations and methods considered here. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. This paper assesses the potential cost-saving incentives for content distribution networks to shift traffic load among geographically distributed data centers in response to hourly variation in electricity prices. Such incentives are likely aligned with benefits to utilities and grid operators, which might take the form of peak-shaving or ancillary services. However, private cost savings are not strictly aligned with public benefits related to the avoidance of health and environmental damages from power plant emissions, so we compare private cost minimization with a strategy that minimizes these externalities. We find that feasible strategies exist to simultaneously realize public and private benefits and that load shifting can result in substantial cost savings and avoided damages in some circumstances. Concerns over increased latency and bandwidth costs can be mitigated with modifications to the model. However, the level of realized savings is dependent upon the specifics of a particular network operator and electricity rate schedule.

BIISQ: Bayesian nonparametric discovery of Isoforms and Individual Specific Quantification

Most human protein-coding genes can be transcribed into multiple possible distinct mRNA isoforms. These alternative splicing patterns encourage molecular diversity and dysregulation of isoform expression plays an important role in disease etiology. However, isoforms are difficult to characterize from short-read RNA-seq data because they share identical subsequences and exist in tissue- and sample-specific frequencies. Here, we develop BIISQ, a Bayesian nonparametric model to discover Isoforms and Individual Specific Quantification from RNA-seq data. BIISQ does not require known isoform reference sequences but instead estimates isoform composition directly with an isoform catalog shared across samples. We develop a stochastic variational inference approach for efficient and robust posterior inference and demonstrate superior precision and recall for short read RNA-seq simulations and simulated short read data from PacBio long read sequencing when compared to state-of-the-art isoform reconstruction methods. BIISQ achieves the most significant gains for longer (in terms of exons) isoforms and isoforms that are lowly expressed (over 500% more transcripts correctly inferred at low coverage in simulations). Finally, we estimate isoforms in the GEUVADIS RNA-seq data, identify genetic variants that regulate transcript ratios, and demonstrate variant enrichment in functional elements related to mRNA splicing regulation. Given a non-cooperative, continuous game, we describe a framework for parametric utility learning. Using heteroskedasticity inference, we adapt a Constrained Feasible Generalized Least Squares (cFGLS) utility learning method in which estimator variance is reduced, unbiased, and consistent. We extend our utility learning method using bootstrapping and bagging. We show the performance of the proposed method using data from a social game experiment designed to encourage energy efficient behavior amongst building occupants. Using occupant voting data we simulate the game defined by the estimated utility functions and show that the performance of our robust utility learning method and quantify its improvement over classical methods such as Ordinary Least Squares (OLS).

In contrast to other types of cancer, breast cancer remains a relatively unexplored target for microwave ablation (MWA) technology. We highlight two recent developments towards the clinical realization of MWA for breast tumor treatment: the design of miniaturized MWA antennas that achieve compact heating patterns without the use of a balun and the investigation of microwave-induced heating in the heterogeneous tissue environment of the breast. Our electromagnetic and thermal simulation results using 3D MRI-derived breast phantoms as testbeds show the potential of MWA as a viable minimally invasive modality for treating breast cancer.
