A randomized study comparing digital imaging to traditional glass slide microscopy for breast biopsy and cancer diagnosis

Background: Digital whole slide imaging may be useful for obtaining second opinions and is used in many countries. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires verification studies. Methods: Pathologists were randomized to interpret one of four sets of breast biopsy cases during two phases, separated by ≥9 months, using glass slides or digital format (sixty cases per set, one slide per case, n = 240 cases). Accuracy was assessed by comparing interpretations to a consensus reference standard. Intraobserver reproducibility was assessed by comparing the agreement of interpretations on the same cases between two phases. Estimated probabilities of confirmation by a reference panel (i.e., predictive values) were obtained by incorporating data on the population prevalence of diagnoses. Results: Sixty-five percent of responding pathologists were eligible, and 252 consented to randomization;208 completed Phase I (115 glass, 93 digital);and 172 completed Phase II (86 glass, 86 digital). Accuracy was slightly higher using glass compared to digital format and varied by category: invasive carcinoma, 96% versus 93% (P = 0.04);ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), 84% versus 79% (P < 0.01);atypia, 48% versus 43% (P = 0.08);and benign without atypia, 87% versus 82% (P < 0.01). There was a small decrease in intraobserver agreement when the format changed compared to when glass slides were used in both phases (P = 0.08). Predictive values for confirmation by a reference panel using glass versus digital were: invasive carcinoma, 98% and 97% (not significant [NS]);DCIS, 70% and 57% (P = 0.007);atypia, 38% and 28% (P = 0.002);and benign without atypia, 97% and 96% (NS). Conclusions: In this large randomized study, digital format interpretations were similar to glass slide interpretations of benign and invasive cancer cases. However, cases in the middle of the spectrum, where more inherent variability exists, may be more problematic in digital format. Future studies evaluating the

Mobile devices create learning opportunities to which you cannot remain indifferent. If you combine these capabilities to specific needs of students and teachers, you will be on the path towards academic success. It was in this context that Letrinhas arose, an information system aimed at improving students' reading literacy developed by the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (IPT) in response to a challenge by Artur Gonçalves Group of Schools from Torres Novas. Teacher and student adherence to the system and the results obtained suggest a positive impact on the reading literacy of the students involved, as well as it has created a new challenge to authors: expanding Letrinhas to other curricular content, thus responding to a need expressed by the teachers of the group of schools. Thus, by investing on the potential of m-learning, a new version of Letrinhas has been developed that provides new resources enabling the creation of new content based on subject matter taught in any subject area, as well as its automatic assessment. As such, teachers can build interactive learning scenarios that favour the development of skills, reflection and the autonomy of their students.

Feasibility of the Quasi Floating Gate (QFG) MOSFET to implement the electronic circuits required in Energy Harvesting or Energy Scavenging microsystems is addressed. Its application in analog circuits allows energy-efficient low-voltage and class AB operation with quiescent currents much lower than the dynamic currents. When it is applied to CMOS digital logic, it allows subthreshold operation with modest performance degradation. Simulation and measurement results of various circuits are presented, validating in practice the proposed techniques.

Current Science, Technology, engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) research has focused mainly on traditional cognitive outcomes, such as high school math and science test scores or Scholastic Aptitude Test results. Few studies have considered a social cognitive approach embedded within a career choice analysis. This research focused on students' perception of high school science levels of preparation and their math self-efficacy as means to measure the impact of social cognitive abilities on career choices. The study used a nationally representative sample taken from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002/06 (ELS: 2002). The aim of this study was tri-fold: (a) to investigate the influence of students' perception about their high school science preparation on their postsecondary majoring, (b) how students' math self-efficacy impacted their STEM majoring odds, and (c) how the influence of such perceptions and self-efficacies differ by students' race and gender. With a sample size of (n=4449) the multilevel Logistic Regression analysis revealed interesting findings. First, math self-efficacy and high school science preparation perceptions found to be significantly impacting all participants' odds of majoring in STEM. Although all female participants' chances of majoring in STEM were affected by math self-efficacy and perceptions about high school science preparation, subgroup analysis revealed an interesting finding. Female minority students' college choice decisions (majoring in STEM or not) seem to be impacted only by their math self-efficacy. These findings indicate that increasing minorities' and female minorities' math self-efficacy through K-12 interventions would increase their chances of majoring in STEM disciplines. Similarly, enhancing minority students' science preparation during high school years may result in such a desirable outcome.

Nowadays, plenty of simulation techniques based on deterministic methods like Ray Tracing and Ray Launching, combining Geometric Optics and Uniform Theory of Diffraction, are used to predict waves' behaviour within a defined environment and to make better decisions on the deployment of antennas for particular purposes. However, simulations' quality largely depends on the number of rays, providing sufficient angular resolution in the ray launching process. The computational cost of simulations in high definition (HD) prevents their use in complex environments and their low definition (LD) counterparts are used. In this article we propose a technique based on collaborative filtering (CF) to lessen the low quality problems of LD simulations. Such technique outperforms previous works in this field in terms of accuracy, precision and computational cost. Moreover, we show that our approach obtains results very similar to those of HD in much less time. Therefore, using combined deterministic-CF techniques allows the estimation of radio-planning tasks in large, complex medical scenarios with a potentially large amount of transceivers.

In this paper, we explain how an experiential learning course and study tour to Gansu Province (People’s Republic of China) enabled undergraduates at the Singapore Management University (SMU) to acquire 21st-century competencies and higher-order thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating specific aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China–Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative — New International Land–Sea Trade Corridor (CCI-ILSTC) with emphasis on developing viable Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies aimed at selling Gansu produce in four Southeast Asian markets. We share how the course was designed to support the attainment of key learning goals and discuss how we turned pedagogical aspirations into concrete learning outcomes. We introduce key aspects of the so-called “SMU-XO” project that the students conducted in partnership with an industry partner, Pacific International Lines (PIL), and discuss how the project work helped learners to gain global competency by (i) examining critical issues related to BRI such as multi-modal infrastructure connectivity, (ii) appreciating the local perspectives of project stakeholders in Lanzhou and Shanghai and (iii) successfully interacting with people from different cultures, namely China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.

The Sultanate of Oman has one of the highest percentages of potential solar radiation in the world, which puts it in an outstanding position to horde electricity generation plants through photovoltaic solar systems. Oman consists of 11 governorates, and each governorate is divided into many Willyiah, which are made up of small villages. Willyiah of Al Duqm is located in Al Wusta Governorate (19°39'42'N 57°42'17'E) in central-eastern Oman. This paper proposes the use of a monthly average hourly diffuse illuminance from meteorological data and from a Geographic Information System (GIS) to identify the best plots suitable for installing photovoltaic solar farms in the Al Duqm Industrial Area. Solar data collected in this study shows that the highest average annual solar radiation data recorded is 5,764 Wh/m2 in the Al Duqm area. Solar radiation data from 2000 to 2012 has been collected for further analysis. The Annual Energy Production (AEP) simulated using ArcGIS ranges between 6,028 Wh/m2 and 3,668 Wh/m2. This shows a very close estimation between simulation results and the data collected from the meteorological department in Oman.
