Real-time transient stability assessment is becoming more feasible using synchrophasor systems. Modern Wide-Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS) are equipped with PMUs and fast communication infrastructure. The paramount advantage of modern WAMS is their capability to provide fast, reliable and synchronized real-time measurements of different system parameters. In this paper, a new real-time Transmission Stability Assessment (TSA) technique is proposed. In the proposed technique, angle-based indices are applied to train five consecutive Decision Trees (DTs) which are used for real-time TSA. The proposed technique is tested on the Northern Intertie, connecting BC Hydro and Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) systems. The obtained results validate the efficiency of the proposed scheme.

Detection, localization, and tracking of shock contour salient points in schlieren sequences

computer vision methods are proposed for feature extraction of structures of interest in schlieren images. The well studied curvature scale spaceis usedto define features atphysically salient pointsonshock contours. These points can include shock interactions, reflections, standoff distance, etc., and are present in many schlieren data. A challenge in developing methods for feature extraction in schlieren images is the reconciliation of existing techniques with structures of interest to an aerodynamicist. Domain-specific knowledge of physics must be incorporated into the definition and detection phases. Algorithms must be designed such that incorporation of an aerodynamic knowledge base is viable and known location and physically possible structure representations form a knowledge base that provides a unique feature definition and extraction. Model tip location and a shock intersection across several thousand frames in the complex double-cone schlieren sequence are identified, localized, and tracked. From examination of the sequence, the model appears still, and motion of the shock intersect is observed. Through the application of computer vision techniques, model stillness is confirmed, and the extent and pattern of the intersect motion are demonstrated. Health often depends as much on human choices as on physical phenomena: how people perceive their status and how they decide to respond affect their health and, more generally, their wellness. Supporting health and wellness with a cyber-physical system requires a holistic integration of components for remote monitoring of both physical and perceptual phenomena. This paper presents a system that meets this requirement through cyber-physical questionnaires, which trigger questions based on physical phenomena to record human perceptions. This prototype is a basis for future efforts aimed at evaluating the system in the field and expanding it not only to track human perceptions but also to affect choices and lifestyles.

Whey is an abundant by-product of cheese production process and it is considered a special waste due to its high nutritional load and hypertrophic potential. Technologies for whey valorization are available. They can convert such waste into high-value products, like whey proteins. However, the remaining liquid (called permeate) is still considered as a polluting waste due to its high lactose concentration. The alcoholic fermentation of lactose into ethanol will simultaneously achieve two important goals: safe disposal of a pollutant waste and green energy production. This methodology paper illustrates the workflow carried out to design and realize an optimized microorganism that can efficiently perform the lactose-to-ethanol conversion, engineered via synthetic biology experimental and computational approaches. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper, we design and evaluate the feasibility of a system which minimizes residential electricity cost of individual homes by shifting demand over a daily forecast price cycle. Ideally, our system will accept use-time preferences from consumers and optimize their appliances' operation around those given patterns. However, using the system to recommend optimum use-times to consumers is also possible by accepting ideal use preferences from an external load manager and computing the cost savings of these preferences relative to the cost of the consumer's current use patterns. We implement the optimization problem in two stages by using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP). In the first stage, we obtain the optimum scheduling for appliances to be connected to the outlet; the output of this stage only shows the hours that we can use the appliance and does not reflect the actual consumption hours of each appliance. In the second stage, we model the random behavior of users via Monte Carlo simulation by running the appliances within the times they receive power, specified in the first stage. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model in terms of cost savings by considering three appliances and four pricing schemes.

Patients and caregivers often seek help and support through online forums for their ailments. In many health forums, users can not only participate in existing, sitedefined user groups but also initiate their own groups. To better understand the mechanism and usefulness of such user-created groups, we comparatively studied their characteristics against those of site-defined groups, based on an empirical dataset of over three years of user activities in health forums collected from ***. In the study, we first derived a categorization of user-created groups according to the underlying reasons leading to their creation, and then investigated if there are significant differences between user-created and site-defined groups with respect to group memberships, activity levels, social network metrics, and interaction patterns. The results show that users initiate more homophily driven communities and social interactions, and that the members of user-created groups are more vocal and more socially active than those who have only participated in site-defined groups. The findings suggest that allowing users to create their own groups could improve user engagement in health forums, foster rapport among users, and ultimately lead to a cohesive social environment that supports more effective information sharing and community building. Crowdsourcing allows for rapid deployment of indoor localization systems. However, compared to the conventional methods, crowdsourcing might collect fewer received signal strength (RSS) values, hence result in greater influence to outliers in RSS values. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to detect such outliers and to substitute them with more suitable RSS values. In particular, we investigate the relationship of RSS values between adjacent locations using a signal propagation model and show that the outliers can be corrected using a signal propagation model. We propose the Signal Propagation-based Outlier Reduction Technic (SPORT) for identifying and adjusting outlier values in both the offline training phase and the online localization phase. Experimental results show that SPORT greatly smoothens the radio map and improves the location accuracy.

In this paper we propose a Dynamic Modeling and Decision Systems (DyMonDS) framework for modeling, simulating and designing cyber in the changing electric energy systems. The approach is fundamentally physics-based, which helps identify the relevant multi-layered structure of their complex dynamics. The common thread throughout the paper is the idea that coupling within a complex interconnected system can be represented using energy stored in different components and the rate of energy exchange with the rest of the system. This idea supports modeling in a transformed state space which makes it possible to systematically design interactive cyber for managing dynamics of energy exchange for provable performance in the evolving multi-physics energy systems. We describe a general scalable DyMonDS simulator currently under the development by our group for demonstrating potential of newly proposed cyber.
