In this paper, a novel watermarking scheme is proposed by embedding a gray-scale watermark into gray-scale images. The proposed scheme is a Hybrid watermarking algorithm based on singular value decomposition (SVD) and Steerable Pyramid (SP) wavelet transform. The robustness of the proposed method is evaluated by executing various image processing attacks. Peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) is used to examine the image quality before and after the embedding process. Experimental results show that the proposed watermarking scheme is robust against various attacks.

The following article describes a senior engineering project design of a completed cost benefit analysis and a demonstration prototype. The project evaluates the potential energy savings of interrupting power to a hot water tank and builds a demonstration prototype as an initial proof of concept. The demonstration prototype uses a microcontroller, sensors, and solid state relay to interrupt power during low usage periods of a residential hot water tank to reduce energy consumption. A cost benefit analysis addresses the results, potential savings, and future enhancements.

In this work, a pulse shaper in coplanar technology intended for the unlicensed band up to the THz region is designed, fabricated, and measured. This broadband frequency range is of great interests as it offers very high data rate communication in local area networks. The technique employs tailored coplanar lines that have been designed using an exact analytical series solution of the synthesis problem derived from the coupled-mode theory. The frequency response of the pulse-shaping device introduced in the synthesis method depends on the spectrum of the applied THz impulse generator, application-dependent devices (e.g. antenna) with known responses, and desired THz output response. Here, the desired output pulse is a combination of Hermite polynomials with 5 ps of temporal duration. The designed device has been simulated in the frequency domain and the obtained result of the S11 parameter has been used in the time domain calculation of the output pulse giving good accordance with the desired THz pulse. The prototype has been fabricated with gold metallization on HR-Si substrate by e-beam lithography and lift-off process. A downscaled version with spectral content up to 0.3 THz is also fabricated and measured validating each component of the system.

Dental fluorosis occurs in many parts of the world because of highly exposure to high concentration of fluoride in the teeth development stage. To help the health policy makers developing the prevention and treatment plans, a manual or automatic image-based dental fluorosis classification system is needed. In this paper, we develop an automatic dental fluorosis classification system using multi-prototypes derived from the fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm. The values from red, green, blue, hue, saturation, and intensity channels are utilized as features in the algorithm. We also set the dental fluorosis classification criteria from the amount of pixels belonging to each class. We found that the pixel correct classification rate is around 92% on the training data set and around 90% on the blind test data set when comparing the results with two experts. Three out of seven images in the training data set and eight out of fifteen images in the blind test data set are correctly classified into dental fluorosis classes.

Many countries, such as the US, China, and the UK, have considered using safe elevators (such as fire elevators) on safe floors (such as refuge floors) in high-rise buildings to speed up emergency evacuation. However, for safety reasons such as sheave traction and brake capability, elevators are designed not to operate when overloaded. Overcrowding, then, may actually slow down building evacuation when a car is overloaded. As a result, how to speed up elevator evacuation considering potential overcrowding is an important issue. This problem is difficult because of the uncertain traffic and complicated elevator scheduling. To reduce the traffic uncertainties, one trend is to use the surveillance cameras in smart high-rise buildings to know the number of waiting evacuees. To avoid the phenomenon of elevator overloading, multiple elevators will be sent to the same floor based on the number of waiting evacuees. To reduce the complication of elevator scheduling, all the elevators are divided into groups with one or more elevators in each group. Then these groups will be dispatched to different floors according to the numbers of waiting evacuees. Our objective is to minimize the evacuation time with the constraints of evacuees' safety. The Genetic Algorithm toolbox in Matlab is used to solve this problem. A case study is used to demonstrate that, compared with the building where one floor can be served by one car, our elevator scheduling can reduce the evacuation time.

This paper addresses the problem of flood detection from the cloud-contaminated MODIS time-series data. Although MODIS data can provide almost daily coverage over the large area with the medium resolution. The use of MODIS data for flood mapping in the tropical regions is a challenging task due to the cloud contamination. Since the floods usually occur in the connected regions over a certain period of time, we employed the Markov random field model to characterize this property. For our experiments, the classification accuracy of flooded and non-flooded areas can be significantly increased by incorporating the MRF model.
