Printed wiring boards (PWBs), also known as printed circuit boards, represent the prevailing interconnect technology for electronics and a key opportunity for making significant environmental improvements. Materials presently used in PWBs may negatively impact human health and the environment - during manufacturing and electronic waste disposal. We propose a more sustainable design based on renewable resources. For material selection we considered environmental issues and industry-standard criteria for cost, performance, and reliability. A matrix formulation based on biological resins and environmentally-benign additives was optimized using experimental design techniques. Flax fibers were impregnated with the optimized matrix formulation based on industry- standard coating techniques. Prototype PWB laminates were manufactured from the pre-impregnated fibers. The resulting PWB design is a viable alternative with potentially lower environmental impacts and costs than currently used PWBs.

One policy aim under electric-industry restructuring has been to replace the centralized utility planning process (integrated resource planning) with regional planning for network investments, and decentralized decision-making for merchant investments. Through specific policies such as encouraging market-based merchant transmission and the proposed establishment of National Interest Transmission Corridors under the Energy policy Act of 2005, congestion and reliability have been treated as separable and independent system attributes. This paper brings together separate pieces of research in (S. Blumsack et al., 2006) to explore the proposition that transmission investments can be divided into those which relieve congestion and those which enhance system reliability. Using the DC power flow model with linear ATC, we derive some explicit necessary and sufficient analytical conditions under which the separability and independence assumptions hold. These include (i) the network is series-parallel; (ii) demand is completely price- inelastic; (iii) all customers value reliability identically; and (iv) the grid operator does not discriminate among customers when forced to physically ration consumption. Simulations using the IEEE 118-bus test system are presented which demonstrate the close dependence of reliability and congestion, except at very low levels of demand.

The recent changes in the world and engineering present both challenges and opportunities to the engineering education. engineering education is changing to meet these challenges. More and more engineering programs strive to include entrepreneurship and innovation, traditionally American values, in the engineering curriculum. In this paper, we present our view on teaching entrepreneurship to future engineers and describe our experience in introducing entrepreneurship in engineering education through an NSF-sponsored pilot program based on collaboration between Stony Brook University and three other major higher education institutions on Long Island.

This paper proposes two real-time control mechanisms, distributed real-time control with regulating buffer threshold (DRC-RBT) and adaptive distributed realtime control (ADRC), for minimizing the packet jitter. To obtain the reliable results we also construct two platforms of testbeds, wireless and wired, to evaluate the proposed mechanisms. The implemented wireless testbed has been suitably applied in the case of small networks, composed of four mobile nodes, for manageability. In contrast, by using an emulator gateway to model ad-hoc environments, the wired testbed has been applied in case of larger networks possibly with consideration of node mobility. Experimental results reveal that each of the proposed methods performs well in different situations. In static network that packet delay is not significant, DRC-RBT is a preferable method; however, this method can serve only the incoming traffic of constant bit rate nature. On the other hand, by appropriately adjusting the assigned weight value of average delay in ADRC, the obtained numerical tests suggest that ADRC can operate efficiently in both static and dynamic network scenarios.

A novel squarer circuit is proposed. The circuit operates in class AB yielding maximum output currents not limited by the quiescent currents. Class AB operation at the input stage is achieved using a compact pseudo-differential pair. Measurement results for a 0.5μm CMOS technology are included that demonstrate the approach followed.

Several Spanish universities have started their process of adaptation towards a common educational space as a first stage towards the implementation of the credit system as established by the regulation prior to 2010. These universities have developed several highly- illuminating experiences which could be useful to those teachers and institutions who have no previous references and models to develop new experiences of ECTS adaptation. To help these scholars and universities this paper reports on a project that has been recently completed and which has been supported by the Spanish Government and by the participation to the Spanish Chapter of IEEE Education Society. More specifically, the paper provides details about the management of the project, namely, details about the contributions of its three working groups, as well as the different tasks carried out and their monitoring. The paper also describes the results obtained with the project and provides assessment on previous pilot experiences presented by Spanish university teachers at engineering Education Conferences as well as on the experiences compiled through the project's Web site.

Drinking water distribution networks represent complex systems. Water flow rates in a water distribution system vary with time, with periodic features that reflect temporal variations in water demand by consumers. The intentional introduction of a contaminant disrupts the system and could theoretically be detected by a sensor or network of sensors placed at nodes (pipe junctions, reservoirs, storage tanks, or even individual consumer taps) in the system. Determining the best locations for placement of these sensors represents a significant research question, because the system has multiple states, the number of possible intrusion points is large, and the likely high cost of these sensors limits the number that can realistically be deployed. The optimal placement of these sensors to minimize the effect of an introduced contaminant on the population is a critical issue. Sensor placement for intrusion detection exhibits an important diminishing returns property: adding a sensor to a sensor network improves the detection ability less than adding it to a subset of the sensor network. We prove that this submodularity property holds for the objective functions that we consider for placing sensors, and exploit it by applying algorithms for maximizing monotonic submodular functions. Unlike existing optimization algorithms for selecting sensor placements, our efficient optimization procedure has strong theoretical performance guarantees. In spite of the problem's complexity, our algorithm is guaranteed to always find a solution that is at least within 63% of the optimum, and will often find a (near-) optimal solution. This method is applied to two hypothetical distribution systems (129 nodes and 12,527 nodes) to determine optimal sensor placements for a sensor network of 5 or 20 sensors. Optimization was based on multiple criteria including: (1) minimizing time to detection, (2) minimizing population affected prior to detection, (3) minimizing expected demand for contaminated

In this paper, we present the joint activities developed in the frame of the FP6 European Network of Excellence METAMORPHOSE in the field of new micro-structured materials for antenna applications. One of the key scientific goals of the research efforts developed within this network is to design innovative micro-structured materials to improve the performances of conventional radiators. Miniaturization, multi- functionality, reduced interference with electronic circuitry, are some of the main challenges in the design of antennas for the next generation of electronic transceivers in the microwave frequency range. The employment of different classes of metamaterials in innovative antenna layouts has been demonstrated to be effective to reach most of the desired goals. The theoretical, numerical and experimental efforts carried out by the leading European institutions working in this field, in fact, show how metamaterial antennas with unusual features are ready to push the innovation in the antenna research. The collaborative dimension of this research is described in this paper, as well as the related scientific achievements.

Remote patient monitoring in e-Health is everyday closer to be a mature technology/service. However, there is still a lack of development in areas such as standardization of the sensor's communication interface, integration into Electronic Healthcare Record systems or incorporation in ambient-intelligent scenarios. This work identifies a set of use cases involved in the personal monitoring scenario and highlights the related features and functionalities, as well as the integration and implementation difficulties found when these are to be implemented in a system based on the ISO/IEEE11073 (X73) standard. It is part of a cooperative research effort devoted to the development of an end-to-end standards-based telemonitoring solution. Standardization committees are working towards adapting the X73 standard to this emerging personal health devices market and use case identification is essential to direct these revisions.

Current mammographic screening for breast cancer is less effective for younger women. To complement mammography for premenopausal women, we investigated the feasibility screening test using 98 blood serum proteins. Because the data set was very noisy and contained only weak features, we used a classifier designed for noisy data: decision fusion. Decision fusion outperformed both a support vector machine (SVM) and linear regression with forward stepwise feature selection on all three two-class classification tasks: normal tissue vs. cancer, normal tissue vs. benign lesions, and benign lesions vs. cancer. Decision fusion detected cancer moderately well (AUC=0.84 on normal vs. cancer), demonstrating promise as a screening tool. Decision fusion also detected benign lesions similarly well (AUC=0.83 on normal vs. benign lesions) and was the only classifier to achieve any success in separating benign from malignant lesions (AUC=0.64 on benign vs. cancer). The classification results suggest that the assayed proteins are more indicative of a secondary effect, such as immune response, rather than specific for breast cancer. In conclusion, the decision fusion classifier demonstrated some promise in detecting breast lesions and outperformed other classifiers, especially for the very noisy classification problem of distinguishing benign from malignant lesions.
