Binary Codes for Correcting Asymmetric Adjacent Transpositions and Deletions

Codes in the Damerau-Levenshtein metric have received some attention by the research community recently owing to their applications in DNA-based data storage. In particular, Gabrys, Yaakobi, and Milenkovic (2017) designed a length-n code correcting a single deletion and s adjacent transpositions with at most (1+2s) log n bits of redundancy. In this work, we consider a new setting where both deletions and asymmetric adjacent transpositions may occur. For asymmetric transpositions, at most s+ 0-right shifts (i.e., 01 → 10) and at most s- 0-left shifts (i.e., 10 → 01) may occur. We present several constructions of the binary codes correcting these errors in various cases. In particular, we design a code correcting a single deletion, s+ right-shift, and s- left-shift errors with at most (1 + s) log(n + s + 1) + 1 bits of redundancy where s = s+ + s-. In addition, we investigate uniquely-decodable codes correcting t 0-deletions and s adjacent transpositions with at most (t + 2s) log n + o(log n) bits of redundancy. Then, we study the code for correcting t 0-deletions, s+ right-shift, and s- left-shift errors with list-decoding algorithms. Our main contribution here is the construction of a list-decodable code with list size O(ns) and with at most (max{t, s + 1}) log n + O(1) bits of redundancy, where s = s+ + s-. We construct non-systematic codes for correcting tb blocks of 0-deletions with l-limited magnitude and s adjacent transpositions with redundancy at most (2(tb+2s)+1) log(n+1)+O(1) bits and systematic codes with at most ((2(tb + 2s) + 1)(1 + 1/(log(tbl + 4))) log(N + 1) + O(log log N) redundant bits in an N-length codeword. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS) has emerged as a compelling paradigm for data sensing and collection, leveraging the widespread adoption of mobile devices and the active participation of numerous users. Despite its potential, MCS faces critical challenges, particularly in recruiting reliable workers and acquiring high-quality sensing data. Most existing approaches assume prior information on worker quality and are vulnerable to collusion attacks, especially having not comprehensively considered workers' reliability and stability. To address these problems, we propose a Multi-Armed Bandit (MAB) based Worker Recruitment Scheme (MWRS) integrated with the Tripartite Stackelberg Game (TSG) for MCS. Specifically, a trust evaluation and truth inference mechanism is introduced to assess the trustworthiness of workers through active truth detection. To enhance recruitment quality, we employ a trust-aware worker selection mechanism that utilizes a modified Upper Confidence Bound (UCB) algorithm, achieving an optimal balance between exploration and exploitation. Furthermore, the interactions among participants are modeled using a TSG framework, which formulates their respective payoffs to determine optimal decision-making strategies, thus achieving mutually beneficial outcomes. Extensive evaluations on real-world datasets demonstrate that our proposed scheme improves total quality by up to 30.8% and reduces regret by up to 80.3% compared to existing methods. © 2025 IEEE.

An efficient cloud based face recognition system for e-health secured login using steerable pyramid transform and local directional pattern

This paper proposes a face recognition system based on steerable pyramid transform (SPT) and local directional pattern (LDP) for e-health secured login in cloud domain. In an e-health login, patients periodically forget their self-made login username and password. This face recognition system can replace the traditional login system. In the proposed system, SPT can decompose a face image into several sub-bands of different scales and orientations, and LDP can encode the sub-bands in binary texture pattern. The LDP binary pattern was obtained by computing the edge response values in all eight directions at each pixel position and generating a code from the relative strength magnitude. Therefore, SPT–LDP design represents a face image in a robust way which includes multiple information sources from different scales and orientations. The proposed system is tested on standard benchmark facial recognition technology (FERET) and extended Yale-B databases. Further, the efficiency of the proposed system is proved by comparing recognition rates with other existing descriptor based methods. From the experimental results it is observed that the proposed system achieves 99.79% recognition in fb set, 90.72% in fc set, 84.97% in dup I set, and 87.69% in dup II set for FERET database and 100% in sub2 set, 100% in sub3 set, 96% in sub4 set and 95% in sub5 set for extended Yale-B database which is better than the existing methods. © Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Cache Allocation in Multi-Tenant Edge Computing: An Online Model-Based Reinforcement Learning Approach

We consider a Network Operator (NO) that owns Edge Computing (EC) resources, virtualizes them and lets third party Service Providers (SPs) run their services, using the allocated slice of resources. We focus on one specific resource, i.e., cache space, and on the problem of how to allocate it among several SPs in order to minimize the backhaul traffic. Due to confidentiality guarantees, the NO cannot observe the nature of the traffic of SPs, which is encrypted. Allocation decisions are thus challenging, since they must be taken solely based on observed monitoring information. Another challenge is that not all the traffic is cacheable. We propose a data-driven cache allocation strategy, based on Reinforcement Learning (RL). Unlike most RL applications, in which the decision policy is learned offline on a simulator, we assume no previous knowledge is available to build such a simulator. We thus apply RL in an online fashion, i.e., the model and the policy are learned by directly perturbing and monitoring the actual system. Since perturbations generate spurious traffic, we thus need to limit perturbations. This requires learning to be extremely efficient. To this aim, we devise a strategy that learns an approximation of the cost function, while interacting with the system. We then use such an approximation in a Model-Based RL (MB-RL) to speed up convergence. We prove analytically that our strategy brings cache allocation boundedly close to the optimum and stably remains in such an allocation. We show in simulations that such convergence is obtained within few minutes. We also study its fairness, its sensitivity to several scenario characteristics and compare it with a method from the state-of-the-art. © 2013 IEEE.

Images from passive imaging polarimeters are often displayed in terms of their intensity (s0), degree of linear polarization (DoLP), and angle of polarization (AOP). The AOP and DoLP together generally provide information about shape and surface quality of imaged objects;however, the information conveyed in these images are often difficult to interpret, especially to an analyst unfamiliar with polarization phenomenology. Furthermore, it can be challenging to train machine learning approaches with direct polarimetric information due to the limited availability of application-specific data. Augmenting s0 images with polarimetric information in the form of contrast and shape enhancement thus allows for the data to remain in the domain of traditional EO-IR intensity imagery that is more familiar for both humans and trained networks. In this work we explore several strategies for effectively fusing polarimetric information into s0 imagery to improve target shape and contrast for both human and algorithmic consumption, with a particular focus on remote sensing and target detection applications. © 2024 SPIE.

This paper deals with a problem of optimizing production, logistics and maintenance in a multi-site, multi-demand fuel refinery. Each site is equipped with one refining machine and parallel storage tanks. The objective is to meet customer demand while maintaining a given service level. The process starts with an economic production plan for each site during each production period. A distribution plan is then implemented to improve cooperation between sites and reduce the risk of shortages in the case of unsatisfied demand. Given the impact of production rates on the refining machines degradation, a preventive maintenance strategy is developed for each machine. In addition, a preventive maintenance strategy for storage tanks is established based on experimental results showing the correlation between production rates and storage tank failure rates due to corrosion. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the robustness of the proposed model. ©2024 IEEE.

Industry 5.0 emphasizes human-centric approaches in technological advancement, particularly crucial in healthcare applications such as prosthetics development. While individual technologies like additive manufacturing, machine learning, digital twins, and tissue engineering have shown promise in prosthetics innovation, their integration remains a significant challenge. This paper presents a novel multidisciplinary framework developed through the National Centre for High-Performance Computing (CN-HPC) project, which addresses the gap between individual technological capabilities and their coordinated application in personalized prosthetics development. The framework, implemented through collaboration between six research groups from two universities, employs the House of Quality methodology to align technological integration with patient needs. Our approach encompasses a comprehensive seven-step process, from initial patient requirements definition through virtual modeling, production process optimization, virtual sensing, machine learning enhancement, digital twin simulation, to advanced tissue engineering. A data model facilitates seamless information exchange between different technological domains and research groups. This research contributes to the field by providing a scalable, human-centered framework for technology integration in medical device development, potentially extending beyond prosthetics to other healthcare applications. The proposed framework represents a significant step toward realizing the full potential of Industry 5.0 in healthcare manufacturing through the systematic integration of advanced technologies for delivering personalized prosthetic solutions. © 2024 The Authors. The Ball and beam system(BBS)is an attractive laboratory experimental tool because of its inherent nonlinear and open-loop unstable *** an effective ball and beam system controller is a real challenge for researchers and *** this paper,the control design technique is investigated by using Intelligent Dynamic Inversion(IDI)method for this nonlinear and unstable *** proposed control law is an enhanced version of conventional Dynamic Inversion control incorporating an intelligent control element in *** Moore-PenroseGeneralized Inverse(MPGI)is used to invert the prescribed constraint dynamics to realize the baseline control law.A sliding mode-based intelligent control element is further augmented with the baseline control to enhance the robustness against uncertainties,nonlinearities,and external *** semi-global asymptotic stability of IDI control is guaranteed in the sense of *** simulations and laboratory experiments are carried out on this ball and beam physical system to analyze the effectiveness of the *** addition to that,comparative analysis of RGDI control with classical Linear Quadratic Regulator and Fractional Order Controller are also presented on the experimental test bench.

GHA: a Gated Hierarchical Attention Mechanism for the Detection of Abusive Language in Social Media

The use of attention mechanisms in deep learning solutions has become popular within natural language processing tasks. The use of these mechanisms allows managing the relevance of the elements of a sequence in accordance with their context, however, this relevance has been observed independently between the pairs of elements of a sequence (self-attention) or between the application domain of a sequence (contextual attention), leading to the loss of relevant information and limiting the representation of the sequences. To tackle these particular issues, we propose a dual attention mechanism, which trades off the previous limitations, by considering the internal and contextual relationships between the elements of the sequence. Additionally, we propose the extension of the dual attention mechanism into a multi-layer perspective, through the weighted fusion of the different encoding layers of deep architectures. As the interpretation of abusive language is highly contextdependent, its identification is an ideal task to evaluate the proposed attention mechanism. Accordingly, we considered six standard collections for the abusive language identification task. The obtained results are encouraging;the proposed hierarchical attention mechanism outperformed the current self-attention and contextual attention mechanisms coupled with recurrent neural networks and Transformers, as well as, state-of-the-art approaches in detecting abusive language. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

In this paper,we propose a game theory framework to solve advanced persistent threat problems,especially considering two types of insider threats:malicious and *** this framework,we establish a unified three-player game model and derive Nash equilibria in response to different types of insider *** analyzing these Nash equilibria,we provide quantitative solutions to advanced persistent threat problems pertaining to insider ***,we have conducted a comparative assessment of the optimal defense strategy and corresponding defender's costs between two types of insider ***,our findings advocate a more proactive defense strategy against inadvertent insider threats in contrast to malicious ones,despite the latter imposing a higher burden on the *** theoretical results are substantiated by numerical results,which additionally include a detailed exploration of the conditions under which different insiders adopt risky *** conditions can serve as guiding indicators for the defender when calibrating their monitoring intensities and devising defensive strategies.
