This paper presents how collaborative learning can facilitate academic training in robotics design and development, with the objective of establishing a foundation in robotics structure design and microcontroller programming for controlling robots, particularly for bilateral undergraduate students. The students comprise 20 engineering students and 20 architecture students, who are divided into groups of two, consisting of an engineering students and an architecture students each. Group activities focusing on robot structure design and robot Development are provided for the students. The results demonstrate that collaborative learning can effectively facilitate the training activities.

Two-finger Multi-DOF Folding Robot Grippers*

Two-finger robot grippers are widely used in various applications. Most conventional designs have a single degree of freedom (DOF). Other than open-and-close, they do not offer additional manipulation ability. Meanwhile, multi-finger high-DOF hands face cost and reliability issues. This paper presents three- and four-DOF linkage mechanisms to design robot grippers that can conduct two-finger twisting and rolling. Kinematics of the linkage mechanisms is studied. Tendon drives are designed so that the robot grippers can be used on tubular robots. A folding mechanism is proposed to help the gripper go through small entrances and narrow passages. Measures that help with miniaturization are discussed, providing opportunities in certain applications such as minimally invasive surgeries. Several advanced design concepts are also discussed for increasing the potentials of the robot grippers.

HAPS-Enabled Sustainability Provision in Cellular Networks through Cell-Switching

There is a consensus in the literature that cell-switching is a viable solution to tackle the draconian increase in the energy consumption of cellular networks. Although the literature is full of works addressing the energy consumption problem via cell-switching, where small cells with low or no load are turned off and the traffic is offloaded to either adjacent base stations or macro cells, in terrestrial communication networks, they may not be feasible when there is either a lack of infrastructure or insufficient capacity due to high demand. The integration of non-terrestrial networks (NTN) into the cell-switching process can be considered as a visionary approach to handle this problem. In this regard, high altitude platform station (HAPS) draws considerable attention with its massive footprint, high capacity, and ubiquitous connectivity. The aim of this study is to show the potential benefits of using HAPS in cell-switching methods by being a bountiful host for offloaded users from cell-switching operations. More specifically, HAPS is included in the network so that it can increase the switching off opportunities by providing extra coverage and capacity. The simulation results demonstrate that a significant amount of reduction in energy consumption (as high as 16%) is obtained while ensuring quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. IoT devices used in various applications, such as monitoring agricultural soil moisture, or urban air quality assessment, are typically battery-operated and energy-constrained. We develop a lightweight and distributed cooperative sensing scheme that provides energy-efficient sensing of an area by reducing spatio-temporal overlaps in the coverage using a multi-sensor IoT network. Our “Sensing Together” solution includes two algorithms: Distributed Task Adaptation (DTA) and Distributed Block Scheduler (DBS), which coordinate the sensing operations of the IoT network through information shared using a distributed “token passing” protocol. DTA adapts the sensing rates from their “raw” values (optimized for each IoT device independently) to minimize spatial redundancy in coverage, while ensuring that a desired coverage threshold is met at all points in the covered area. DBS then schedules task execution times across all IoT devices in a distributed manner to minimize temporal overlap. On-device evaluation shows a small token size and execution times of less than 0.6s on average while simulations show average energy savings of 5% per IoT device under various weather conditions. Moreover, when devices had more significant coverage overlaps, energy savings exceeded 30% thanks to cooperative sensing. In simulations of larger networks, energy savings range on average between 3.34% and 38.53%, depending on weather conditions. Our solutions consistently demonstrate near-optimal performance under various scenarios, showcasing their capability to efficiently reduce temporal overlap during sensing task scheduling.

The use of Artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the content creation to produce creative aspects like editing, audience analysis, creating ideas, writing copy, etc. The major aim is to streamline and automate the process of content creation and convert it into a more efficient and effective way. There is a lack of transparency in the AI content production process and hence it does not exactly mimic human activities, which includes fantasizing and picking up new abilities. AI content creation requires more creativity while investigating with a specific goal in mind. Although, AI faces many challenges since it constantly expands its base knowledge. One of the biggest ethical problems is the probability that AI content is used to deceive or influence people. Hence, to overcome these difficulties a machine learning-based Artificial Intelligent content creation framework is generated for content creation in Ad-supported TV. Here, an effective model Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) introduced to deliver enterprise data, customize descriptions, and adjust content based on consumer behaviors. This developed model produces material that is closely related to the preferences of the user. AI content creation increases efficiency and productivity by saving time and money. It also leads to the development of better content. Finally, the experimental analysis is performed to find the effectiveness of the developed deep learning-based AI content creation framework via various metrics.

Floquet engineering of dressed surface plasmon polariton modes in plasmonic waveguides

We present a comprehensive study surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation on planar metallic waveguides under a dressing field. We perform a set of analytical calculations of the periodic time-dependent Schrödinger equation to study the interaction of an intense electromagnetic field with a metallic system. We model the strong light coupling to the metallic system using a nonperturbative procedure. In this paper, we show that, by introducing Floquet theory into the dressed metal, the behavior of the Floquet states are similar to the phase-modulated signals in the communication system. This will reveal a new perspective on the underlying science in an intricate, dressed quantum system. Furthermore, we examine the impurity scattering effects on charge transport in disordered plasmonic metals using the generalized Floquet-Fermi golden rule and provide a novel approach to diminish the losses in plasmonic materials using the dressing field. To gauge the effectiveness of our results, we introduce a figure of merit to compare the performance of plasmonic metals, subjective to a dressing field. The calculated dressed SPP characteristics suggest that high-efficiency SPP propagation can be achieved in practice. Our findings open up new directions for state-of-the-art nanoplasmonic devices.

In repeat-pass interferometric synthetic aperture radar (In-SAR), the coherence loss derived from temporal decorrelation can be modeled using an exponential decay function. Many researches have investigated the relationships between decay parameters over various land-cover types for C-band SAR satellites. Although ALOS PALSAR provides many L-band SAR images, its revisit time was insufficient for understanding the rapid exponential drop in temporal decorrelation. Due to the lack of an appropriate archived dataset, analyzing the decay parameters for L-band SAR was a challenging task. In this study, we processed four-year interferometric pairs derived from ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 full-aperture ScanSAR images. This dataset has a 14 day minimum temporal interval. We selected Nairobi, Kenya, in the middle of the East African rift, as the study area and investigated how decay functions differ over multiple land-cover types. In addition, we compared decay models for Sentinel-1 interferograms. This study demonstrates that the decay parameters of L-band coherence completely differs across forest types, whereas C-band coherence is low coherence regardless of forest type.

This paper focuses on the challenge of jointly optimizing location and path loss exponent (PLE) in distance-dependent noise. Departing from the conventional independent noise model used in localization and path loss exponent estimation problems, we consider a more realistic model incorporating distance-dependent noise variance, as revealed in recent theoretical analyses and experimental results. The distance-dependent noise introduces a complex noise model with unknown noise power and PLE, resulting in an exceptionally challenging non-convex and nonlinear optimization problem. In this study, we address a joint localization and path loss exponent estimation problem encompassing distance-dependent noise, unknown parameters, and uncertainties in sensor node locations. To surmount the intractable nonlinear and non-convex objective function inherent in the problem, we introduce a variational Bayesian learning-based framework that enables the joint optimization of localization, path loss exponent, and reference noise parameters by leveraging an effective approximation to the true posterior distribution. Furthermore, the proposed joint learning algorithm provides an iterative closed-form solution and exhibits superior performance in terms of computational complexity compared to existing algorithms. computer simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm approaches the performance of the Bayesian Cramer-Rao bound (BCRB), achieves localization performance comparable to the (maximum likelihood-Gaussian message passing) ML-GMP algorithm in some cases, and outperforms the other comparison algorithm in all cases. Allocation Multiplicity: Evaluating the Promises of the Rashomon Set

The Rashomon set of equally-good models promises less discriminatory algorithms, reduced outcome homogenization, and fairer decisions through model ensembles or reconciliation. However, we argue from the perspective of allocation multiplicity that these promises may remain unfulfilled. When there are more qualified candidates than resources available, many different allocations of scarce resources can achieve the same utility. This space of equal-utility allocations may not be faithfully reflected by the Rashomon set, as we show in a case study of healthcare allocations. We attribute these unfulfilled promises to several factors: limitations in empirical methods for sampling from the Rashomon set, the standard practice of deterministically selecting individuals with the lowest risk, and structural biases that cause all equally-good models to view some qualified individuals as inherently risky. © 2025, CC BY.

This paper provides a comparative analysis of file system performance between type-1 Linux-based hypervisors. Proxmox VE and KVM were selected as representative examples of type-1 Linux-based hypervisors. Though both hypervisors initially appear to have similar Linux-based and QEMU-based architectures, significant differences become apparent upon closer examination. For our experiments, we utilized Filebench due to its exceptional flexibility and adaptability, which allow it to emulate practical applications within realistic server environments. CentOS 9 was chosen as the guest operating system, serving as a common example of Linux distributions. Tests were performed with one, two, three, and four virtual machines running concurrently. Furthermore, this paper includes a mathematical model of the type-1 virtual environment, supplemented by a real-world experiment that serves as a case study. The mathematical model is used to interpret the performance results obtained from the experiments.
