The Javanese language is a local subject taught in almost all elementary schools on the island of Java. Most students have difficulties learning Javanese, especially the Javanese letters. They can hardly read and write the Javanese traditional scripts as they are no longer for daily reading and writing. Therefore, this research develops attractive Javanese letters learning medium to ease the students studying the Javanese letters independently and improve their understanding and learning outcomes as an Android-based mobile application. This study involved 57 students (28 students in the experimental group and 29 students in the control group), two Javanese language teachers, and two media experts. Experiments and testing were conducted for approximately two weeks, with the experimental group using the SinAr application and the control group using textbooks during the learning process. The result is that the experimental group show a higher increase in learning outcomes than the control group, so it approached the ability of the control group, which was superior in Javanese lessons based on the pretest and post-test results. The SinAr application also supports understanding of the material, student learning independence, and interesting learning, based on the results of trials on 57 students who overall received and gave good responses to the SinAr application for each aspect of learning design, operational, and visual communication with scores of 4.29 (85%). © 2023 IEEE.

Experiment on Multi-hop LoRa for Tracking Application

Background: The Internet of Things (IoT) is an embryonic model that converts real-world things (objects) into smarter devices. IoT is applicable to a variety of application domains, including healthcare, smart grid, and agriculture. Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technology can transmit data over long distances with a low data rate without using the internet. There-fore, this technology is suitable for sending sensor measurement data in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. LPWANs, such as LoRa, use a star topology to reach their coverage to the maximum power that can be transmitted, considering the environmental conditions in the test area and the LoRa parameters used. Whereas for application development in rural areas, there is no internet connection, and often longer coverage is required from the sensor node to the gateway. Objective: This study aims to increase the transmission range from the end node to the gateway by adding an intermediate node. It is used as a relay from the end node to the gateway. Method: Static routing was applied so that any broadcast data from the end node would be for-warded first to the intermediate node and then to the gateway. Results: The LoRa transmission range expanded by changing the topology from peer-to-peer to multi-hop. An intermediate node between the transmitter (end node) and the gateway is available. In the experiment performed, a multi-hop with static routes successfully expanded the distance from 150 meters (single hop) to 250 meters (multi-hop), with a packet delivery ratio of 97%. In this experiment, GPS Ublox Neo was used for the sensor position and was successfully tested on the end node with an accuracy rate of 2.4% for latitude and 0.2% for longitude. Conclusion: The transmission range from the sensor node to the gateway can be extended using static routing by installing an intermediate node between the gateway and the sensor node. While fairness-aware machine learning algorithms have been receiving increasing attention, the focus has been on centralized machine learning, leaving decentralized methods underexplored. Federated Learning is a decentralized form of machine learning where clients train local models with a server aggregating them to obtain a shared global model. Data heterogeneity amongst clients is a common characteristic of Federated Learning, which may induce or exacerbate discrimination of unprivileged groups defined by sensitive attributes such as race or gender. In this work we propose FAIR-FATE: a novel FAIR FederATEd Learning algorithm that aims to achieve group fairness while maintaining high utility via a fairness-aware aggregation method that computes the global model by taking into account the fairness of the clients. To achieve that, the global model update is computed by estimating a fair model update using a Momentum term that helps to overcome the oscillations of non-fair gradients. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach in machine learning that aims to achieve fairness using a fair Momentum estimate. Experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate that FAIR-FATE outperforms state-of-the-art fair Federated Learning algorithms under different levels of data heterogeneity. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Feature selection is a pivotal process in machine learning and data analysis, aimed at improving model performance by identifying and utilizing the most relevant features while eliminating redundant and irrelevant ones. The Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), a metaheuristic algorithm based on the social hierarchy and hunting behavior of grey wolves, has proven to be an effective method for feature selection. However, it is also easy to get trapped in the local optima. Therefore, this study presents an enhanced Grey Wolf Optimizer with Opposition, Mutation, and Local Search Strategy (GWO-OMLSS) to boost exploration and exploitation of GWO in order to avoid the algorithm falling into local optima. The proposed method was validated using ten becnhmark data sets from the UCI machine learning repository and compared with state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithm-based feature selections, such as GWO, PSO, ESSA, and CS. The Experimental results demonstrate that GWO-OMLSS outperforms the standard of GWO and other metaheuristic algorithms on all data sets except Ionosphere and Wine. The proposed method achieves the best an accuracy of 99.7% and 99.8% on the Exactly and M-of-n data sets, respectively, while also significantly reducing the number of features. It indicates that the proposed method not only obtains high accuracy, but also reduces the dimensionality of features effectively. It means that the proposed method can be considered as a promising algorithm for feature selection. © 2024 IEEE.

The Greek School Network (GSN) provides support to students, teachers, and school units in secondary education across Greece. Handling numerous user queries manually can be challenging, necessitating the development of an automated system for accurate categorization of these queries. This paper presents a comparative study of various transformer-based models for multi-class text categorization of Greek language queries submitted to the GSN helpdesk. We introduce a new experimental balanced dataset and extract vector representations from eleven transformer-based models. These representations are evaluated using ten classic machine learning classifiers. Our findings highlight the superior performance of the Multilingual E5 Text Embeddings model, particularly when paired with the extreme gradient-boosting classifier. This combination demonstrates a clear advantage in accurately categorizing user queries, paving the way for more efficient automated helpdesk systems. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper investigates the interaction of non-expert stakeholders with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the energy urban domain, using the VIRTSI model and focusing on the capabilities of ChatGPT. VIRTSI (Variability and Impact of Reciprocal Trust States towards Intelligent systems), is a rigorous computational model for human-AI Interaction that simulates human trust states, spanning from overtrust to distrust, through user modelling and quantifies the efficiency of the interaction in VIRTSI-adapted confusion matrices. The research employed an 16-question survey, evaluating the accuracy and usefulness of ChatGPT's responses regarding energy consumption, cost-effective solutions, and renewable energy production for residential buildings in Greece. Each answer was assessed by human stakeholders who were non-expert in the energy Urban Domain (e.g house owners, building managers, etc.), who either accepted or rejected the responses based on validation processes. The analysis highlighted key aspects such as repetition, specification, and objections in the interaction with ChatGPT, offering insights into the effectiveness of AI in supporting energy-related decisions. The findings reveal that while AI can provide valuable information, user validation and expert consultation are critical for practical implementation. This highlights both the potential and limitations of integrating AI tools like ChatGPT in enhancing non-expert stakeholder engagement and decision-making in urban energy management, emphasizing the ongoing need for human expert involvement. © 2024 IEEE.

Efficiency and fairness improvement for elastic optical networks using reinforcement learning-based traffic prediction

The characteristics of traffic in core networks have changed in recent years, with the data flows among network nodes now showing large volumes but also large fluctuations during the day. In such a dynamic environment, the static allocation of network resources by making reservations at the peak rates is wasteful, both in terms of energy consumption and resource efficiency. Periodic reconfiguration of network resources is necessary for the full exploitation of an elastic optical network's potential. In this paper, we present a resource reconfiguration scheme for an IP over elastic optical core network. The cornerstone of the proposed scheme is a novel traffic prediction mechanism based on reinforcement learning. Using the forecasting mechanism, a heuristic routing and spectrum assignment algorithm was designed to efficiently and fairly allocate network resources periodically. Simulation results show both a reduction of the bandwidth blocking probability and an increase of the fairness index regarding the network resources allocation over corresponding algorithms in the literature. © 2009-2012 Optica Publishing Group.

Supervised learning applied to electrocardiogram statistical features for the detection of premature ventricular contraction

Purpose: The development of an automated premature ventricular contraction (PVC) detection system has significant implications for early intervention and treatment decisions. This study aims to develop a novel approach using various supervised machine learning (ML) methods for detecting PVCs in electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings. Methodology: To achieve this, we extracted ten distinct statistical and temporal features from 33 long-term ECG recordings from the benchmark MIT-BIH arrhythmia database (MIT-BIH-AD), capturing significant characteristics from the signals. We then investigated the effectiveness of traditional ML algorithms in identifying PVCs based on these features, namely support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (DT), naïve Bayes (NB), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and artificial neural network (ANN). Results: Among these classifiers, the SVM, KNN, ANN, and DT classifiers demonstrated exceptional discriminatory power and classification performance, yielding near-perfect area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC) values of 97.3%, 95.4%, 95%, and 94.1%, respectively. On the other hand, the SVM classifier emerged as the most accurate, achieving an overall accuracy of 97.39%, indicative of making correct predictions. Conclusion: These findings underscore the generalization of the proposed approach, especially since we worked on an extended dataset encompassing different types of heartbeats to discriminate PVCs from other heartbeat types, not only normal ones, and providing closer alignment with real-world scenarios. Subsequently, the robustness and accuracy of these models highlight their suitability for clinical applications and their potential for efficient implementation and deployment in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), as they demand minimal computational resources and time. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of Biomedical engineering 2025.
