Plugged-in electric vehicle-assisted demand response strategy for residential energy management

Demand response (DR) management systems are a potentially growing market due to their ability to maximize energy savings by allowing customers to manage their energy consumption at times of peak demand in response to financial incentives from the electricity supplier. Successful execution of a demand response program requires an effective management system where the home energy management system (HEMS) is a promising solution nowadays. HEMS is developed to manage energy use in households and to conduct the management of energy supply, either from the grid or the alternative energy sources like solar or wind power plants. With the increase of vehicle electrification, in order to achieve a more reliable and efficient smart grid (SG), cooperation between electric vehicles (EVs) and residential systems is required. This cooperation could involve not only vehicle to grid (V2G) operation but a vehicle to home (V2H) too. V2H operation is used to transfer the power and relevant data between EVs and residential systems. This paper provides an efficient HEMS enhanced by smart scheduling and an optimally designed charging and discharging strategy for plugged-in electric vehicles (PEVs). The proposed design uses a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for smart scheduling and to take the charging (from the grid)/discharging (supply the household appliances) decision without compromising the driving needs. Simulations are presented to demonstrate how the proposed strategies can help to reduce electricity costs by 19.28% and 14.27% with 30% and 80% state of charge (SOC) of the PEV respectively compared to the case where G2V operation only used along with the photovoltaic (PV) production, improve energy utilization by smoothing the energy consumption profile and satisfy the user’s needs by ensuring enough EV battery SOC for each planned trip. © 2023, The Author(s).

It is a widely accepted fact that state-sponsored Twitter accounts operated during the 2016 US presidential election, spreading millions of tweets with misinformation and inflammatory political content. Whether these social media campaigns of the so-called "troll" accounts were able to manipulate public opinion is still in question. Here, we quantify the influence of troll accounts on Twitter by analyzing 152.5 million tweets (by 9.9 million users) from that period. The data contain original tweets from 822 troll accounts identified as such by Twitter. We construct and analyze a very large interaction graph of 9.3 million nodes and 169.9 million edges using graph analysis techniques and a game-theoretic centrality measure. Then, we quantify the influence of all Twitter accounts on the overall information exchange as defined by the retweet cascades. We provide a global influence ranking of all Twitter accounts, and we find that one troll account appears in the top-100 and four in the top-1000. This, combined with other findings presented in this paper, constitute evidence that the driving force of virality and influence in the network came from regular users - users who have not been classified as trolls by Twitter. On the other hand, we find that, on average, troll accounts were tens of times more influential than regular users were. Moreover, 23% and 22% of regular accounts in the top-100 and top-1000, respectively, have now been suspended by Twitter. Roshal Archive (RAR) format is one of the most widely used data archive formats, enabling users to reduce the size of data and protect it with the desired password before the data is transferred to its intended recipients over the network. This work focuses on the security of encrypted RAR archives and various different approaches for their decryption. Two different datasets composed of randomly generated and real-world user passwords were used for deploying brute force and dictionary attacks on password-protected RAR archives. Two available and widely used tools, John the Ripper and Hashcat, were used for cracking passwords of encrypted RAR3 and RAR5 archives. Experimental results indicate that both brute force and dictionary attacks were unsuccessful for RAR archives protected with randomly generated passwords, even of very small length. Real-world user passwords were successfully cracked only partially by brute force attacks, whereas dictionary attacks were very successful. The success rate for RAR5 archives was only slightly lower than for RAR3 archives and processing times were similar, indicating that this new version of the RAR format does not significantly improve data security. Instead, the security of RAR archives can be increased by using longer passwords more similar to randomly generated data, which are not present in commonly used dictionaries, as indicated by the experimental results. © VDE VERLAG GMBH ∙ Berlin ∙ Offenbach.

The improvement of the control of the hybrid photovoltaic system with a storage battery to increase the power of objects over the limit on consumption from the grid is considered. The aim is to ensure the functioning of the system at the deviation of the load schedule from the calculated one and the generation of photovoltaic battery from the forecast value while maintaining the taken limit of the energy storage depth of discharge. The principle of the control has been improved by setting the value of the added power and forming the state of charge graph of the storage battery. The formation of the storage battery state of charge graph with the correction of the value of the added power according to the deviation of the state of charge from the calculated value with a given step of discreteness in time is proposed. The control algorithm has been changed with the introduction of additional limitations and the exclusion of correction at separate time intervals. Changes are taken into account in the 24-hour model of energy processes in the system. Also, the error of the storage battery state of charge estimation is taken into account. The simulation results confirm the possibility of providing the accepted depth of the discharge value for the calculated load schedule when photovoltaic battery generation is below the forecast value of up to 30%. © 2023 IEEE.

Optimal control of electric automated buses in intercity lines: scenario-based analysis of the Pareto-optimal solutions

This paper deals with the optimal control of electric and automated buses that have to follow an intercity line, where some stops are equipped with a flash-charging infrastructure to charge the batteries, while others are not. In order to control these buses, it is necessary to account for the traffic conditions along the roads of the bus line, and to minimize two objectives related to the deviations from the bus timetable and the lack of energy, at the end of the bus trip, with respect to a desired final energy level. The resulting optimal control problem is a multi-objective linear quadratic problem with both continuous and integer variables. In this paper, we propose and apply two methods based on lexicographic ordering aimed at determining the Pareto-optimal solutions of the control problem in twelve scenarios inspired by a real case.

In this paper, we consider a novel hybrid reconfigurable intelligent surface (HRIS) consisting of active as well as passive reflecting elements mounted on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The aim is to improve air-to-ground communication by assisting multiple users, while detecting several moving targets. We formulate an optimization model that account for statistical channel estimation errors (SCEEs) to concurrently fine-tune both active and passive phase-shift matrices, UAV trajectory and transmit beamformer for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), while aiming to maximize the overall achievable sum-rate. Subsequently, we introduce an alternating optimization algorithm that employs a repetitive method to address the combinatorial nonconvex optimization problem and ultimately yielding a solution that is nearly optimal. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we showcase the superiority of the suggested approach in comparison to baseline schemes. © 2024 IEEE.

The rapid development of network connections and the widespread use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has increased network traffic. The surge in network traffic has created new vulnerabilities in cyberspace, making it vulnerable to cyber-attacks. To address this challenge, researchers have turned to intelligent techniques, especially machine learning and deep learning, to improve the detection of network traffic attacks. However, a common problem arises: the data imbalance problem, where normal samples occur more often than attack samples, which hurts the performance and classification of machine learning or deep learning models. This study conducted a systematic literature review to identify the imbalanced datasets and the use of resampling techniques for addressing data imbalances in network intrusion detection research. We found four widely-used imbalanced datasets: NSL-KDD, CIC-IDS2017, UNSW-NB15, and KDD-Cup 1999. Researchers used three resampling approaches to tackle the imbalance problem: oversampling, undersampling, and hybrid sampling (combining oversampling and undersampling approaches). Researchers and practitioners can improve the security and efficiency of attack detection across network traffic by applying resampling techniques. © 2023 IEEE.

We apply Extreme Value Analysis on sets of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging data with the goal to extract indications in the data of future trends in the demand for EV charging. The datasets have been provided by DEI blue, a service designed to provide integrated e-mobility solutions to individuals, companies and public administration throughout Greece. Eventhough the data are limited as they have been collected during a period of only twelve months, our analysis still reveals trends in the data highlighting a probable seasonality. The seasonality is observed during periods of extreme heat, regional population mobility and incoming visitors. These occurrences impact technical aspects of battery efficiency, grid capacity and a shift of behavioural usage patterns. Our findings cannot be ignored by policy makers as they are expected to intensify in the years to come due to the fast-rising number of EVs in use. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The imbalanced class distribution in intrusion detection systems has been a significant issue. Imbalanced class distribution can negatively impact the performance of intrusion detection systems as they may be biased towards the majority class. We explore the effectiveness of oversampling and under-sampling techniques to address this issue. Oversampling and undersampling techniques aim to balance the class distribution and improve the performance of the intrusion detection system. Oversampling increases the number of records in the minority class to make it closer in size to the majority class. Conversely, undersampling reduces the number of records in the majority class so that it is closer in size to the minority class. We assess the effectiveness of different oversampling and undersampling techniques, including Random OverSampling, SMOTE, ADASYN, Random UnderSampling, AllKNN, TomekLinks, SMOTEENN, and SMOTETomek. The experiment's findings indicate that the raw data achieved the highest accuracy score, 0.965. On the other hand, the Random Oversampling method yielded the highest F1 score, reaching a score of 0.589. When we see the evaluation scores of each class, the recall & F1 scores generally show high contrast between classes with a large amount of data and classes with (previously) a small amount of data, even though the data for training has been more balanced. We found that oversampling and undersampling can improve the performance of intrusion detection systems in specific ways, but this still needs improvement. These results can serve as a reference for researchers developing intrusion detection systems. © 2023 IEEE.
