A denoising procedure based on a thresholding function has been integrated into the JPEG2000 part II standard which is designed to support a wide variety of applications, including the compression and transmission of medical images. This standard is based on the discrete wavelet transform using the Daubechies(9,7) biorthogonal wavelet, also named the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau 9/7 wavelet. However, is this the best choice concerning quality at any time? In this work we compared the results from 36 different variations of wavelets compression schemes to explore their difference related to image content and quality. Two groups of well known images of different levels of complexities and content are used to evaluate the relation among fidelity, image content and noise level. The first group is formed by natural images and the second group is formed by synthetic images. They are considered on two different resolutions (128 × 128 and 256 × 256) and with high level of Additive White Gaussian Noise. The performance of each approach is evaluated by means of fidelity, comparing the originals without noise versus the same images after compression/denoising and decompression. The goal is to define which combination present the best and the worst results considering the final visual quality.

The discovery of biomarkers and the underlying causes of diseases are enabled through the analysis of biological samples and data stored in biobanks. Biological samples and their associated data are expensive to collect and maintain, and it is important to store and manage them efficiently. During processing, samples and data go through a number of procedures and techniques, which are often in different locations and by individuals with different access permissions. It is essential to maintain the link between the samples and their associated data throughout the processes they undergo. This paper presents a novel system of tracking samples and data from collection through processing to storage and retrieval, which is based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. This system ensures the security and reliability of sample data as well as location-independent recording and updating of sample data, as they move along the workflow.

Smart homes for the aging population have recently started attracting the attention of the research community. One of the problems of interest is this of monitoring the activities of daily living (ADLs) of the elderly, in order to help identify critical problems, aiming to improve their protection and general well-being. In this paper, we report on our initial attempts to recognize such activities, based on input from networks of far-field microphones distributed inside the home. We propose two approaches to the problem: The first models the entire activity, which typically covers long time spans, with a single statistical model, for example a hidden Markov model (HMM), a Gaussian mixture model (GMM), or GMM super-vectors in conjunction with support vector machines (SVMs). The second is a two-step approach: It first performs acoustic event detection (AED) to locate distinctive events, characteristic of the ADLs, and it is subsequently followed by a post-processing stage that employs activity-specific language models (LMs) to classify the output sequences of detected events into ADLs. Experiments are reported on a corpus containing a small number of acted ADLs, collected as part of the Netcarity Integrated Project inside a two-room smart home. Our results show that SVM GMM supervector modeling improves six-class ADL classification accuracy to 76%, compared to 56% achieved by the GMMs, while also outperforming HMMs by 8% absolute. Preliminary results from LM scoring of acoustic event sequences are comparable to those from GMMs on a three-class ADL classification task.

A number of multi-channel assignment schemes have recently been proposed to improve the throughput of IEEE 802.11-based multi-hop wireless mesh networks (WMNs). In these schemes, channel coordination is done either through time synchronization across all the hosts, or through the use of a dedicated channel for the transmission of necessary control messages. Either way, excessive system overhead and/or waste of bandwidth resource become unavoidable, undermining the overall network throughput. To maximize the network throughput, we propose a synchronization-free, hybrid temporal-spatial multi-channel assignment scheme in a random heterogeneous network requiring only a single radio interface per host. In this scheme, the gateway is allowed to use all the available channels sequentially in a round-robin fashion. This temporal channel assignment approach ensures that all the neighboring hosts that communicate with the gateway directly shall have a fair access to the gateway. The channel assignment for the remaining wireless hosts is based on the geographical location and channel availability (a spatial approach) to avoid the interference within the communication region of each sender host in its transmission time period. Compared with another multi-channel scheme MMAC, extensive simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme can improve the network throughput substantially with the acceptable collision ratio.

In this paper we presented and classified various approaches for redundancy in the area of wireless sensor networks, related to sensing, communication and information processing. Sometimes an ally, sometimes a foe, redundancy is an inherent feature of sensor networks that has to be very carefully examined in order to improve important aspects of their functioning. Moreover, this paper presents two methodologies: one that implies both components of spatial redundancy and one that implies the use of temporal redundancy for achieving the objective of fault-tolerant and safe operation. In the end, the fields in which the redundancy could be applied with significant results are highlighted.

The storage and retrieval of digital ECGs in a standard-compliant way has been a key issue during the last decades. The SCP-ECG standard, one of the top efforts in this area, has been recently approved as part of the ISO/IEEE 11073 (x73) family of standards, a reference standard for medical device interoperability. For the Personal Health Device (PHD) version of the x73 standard several devices have been defined, but an ECG device specialization is not yet available. In this paper, the relationships between the SCP-ECG fields and messages and the particular way of the x73-PHD standard to deal with stored data are investigated and discussed. A proof-of-concept implementation of the x73-PHD storage and retrieval method applied to ECGs is also presented, identifying open issues and potential modifications to be considered for the wider interoperability adoption of x73-PHD standards.

Service-oriented architecture can be considered as a philosophy or paradigm in organizing and utilizing services and capabilities that may be under the control of different ownership domains. Virtualization provides abstraction and isolation of lower level functionalities, enabling portability of higher level functions and sharing of physical resources. However, dynamics, environmental conditions and increasing complexity / heterogeneity of underlying resources call for adaptive resource handling. In this view an intelligent distributed architecture that enables dynamic user management and control on network-wide resource sharing by using the service oriented architecture concept is presented. Additionally, the proposed architecture supports trading of resources that will enable the transformation of traditional business models.

The concept of a modular climbing caterpillar robot is inspired by the kinematics of the real caterpillar. Due to the fixed constraints between the suckers and wall, the gait of the caterpillar robot engages a changing kinematic chain which is from an open chain to a closed chain, and then to an open chain orderly. This paper investigates the joint control methods of the gait in detail. During the open chain periods, an Unsymmetrical Phase Method (UPM) is applied to ensure the reliable attachment of the passive suckers to the wall. But in the closed chain state, a four links kinematics model is adopted to fulfill the fixed constraints produced by the attached suckers. By combining the two methods together, we acquire complete joint control trajectories for a modular caterpillar robot with seven joints. At the end of this paper, on-site tests confirm the above principles and the validity of the climbing gait.

Proposed in the 1980s, the sparse distributed memory (SDM) is a model of an associative memory based on the properties of a high dimensional binary space. This model has received some attention from researchers of different areas and has been improved over time. However, a few problems have to be solved when using it in practice, due to the non-randomness characteristics of the actual data. We tested an SDM using different forms of encoding the information, and in two different domains: robot navigation and manipulation. Our results show that the performance of the SDM in the two domains is affected by the way the information is actually encoded, and may be improved by some small changes in the model.
