Automated human body modeling from monocular video sequences is a challenging task because humans may possess very sophisticated postures with various types of motions. The self-occlusion problem often makes body parts invisible in a period of time. In this paper, we propose an automated contour-based 2D human modeling system which is able to deal with partial self-occlusion problem. The 2D human silhouette is decomposed into several essential parts with a step-by-step approach starting with head extraction, torso extraction, and followed by probabilistic limb configuration estimation. The modeling mechanism only uses basic human kinematic constraints and no predefined motion models are required. In this paper, without loss of generality, we demonstrate two types of human motion in the experiments and show that our approach can successfully extract 2D human body parts with partial occlusions and unpredictable torso orientation under a monocular view. The successful development of this framework can eventually be applied to all kinds of human centric event detection and behavior understanding.

In this paper, we present a novel approach for 3D facial expression recognition which is inspired by the advances of ant colony and particle swarm optimization (ACO and PSO respectively) in the field of data mining. Anatomical correspondence between faces is first established using a generic 3D face model which is deformed elastically to match the facial surfaces. Surface points are then used as a basis for classification according to a set of classification rules, which are discovered by an ACO/PSO-based rule discovery algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated on the BU-3DFEDB facial expression database where a total recognition rate of 92.3% was achieved.

This paper presents an ontological self-organizing map (OSOM), which is used to produce visualization and functional summarization information about gene products using gene ontology (GO) similarity measures. The OSOM is an extension of the self-organizing map as initially developed by Kohonen, which trains on data composed of sets of terms. Term-based similarity measures are used as a distance metric as well as in the update of the OSOM training procedure. We present an OSOM-based visualization method that shows the cluster tendency of the gene products. Also demonstrated is an OSOM-based functional summarization which produces the most representative term(s) (MRT) from the GO for each OSOM prototype and, subsequently, each gene product cluster. We validated the results of our method by applying the OSOM to a well-studied set of gene products.

The domain of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is one of the most rapidly growing scientific fields. This is because not only the technological advances have enabled the development of advanced sensor nodes with extremely low cost but the potential applications of such structures are ever growing too. WSNs differ from traditional wireless communication networks in several of their characteristics. One of them is power awareness, due to the fact that the batteries of sensor nodes have a restricted lifetime and are difficult to be replaced. Therefore, all protocols must be designed in such a way as to minimize energy consumption and preserve the longevity of the network. That is why, routing protocols in WSNs aim mainly to accomplish power conservation while in traditional networks they focus primarily on the Quality of Service (QoS). Recent advances in WSNs have led to many new protocols specifically designed for sensor networks where energy awareness is an essential issue. This work suggests the development of such hierarchical routing protocol, named SHPER (Scaling Hierarchical Power Efficient Routing), which proves to be particularly effective.

Heterogeneous computing environment such as grid computing allows sharing and aggregation of a wide variety of geographically distributed computational resources (such as supercomputers, clusters, data sources, people and storage systems) and present them as a single, unified resource for solving large-scale and data-intensive computing applications. A common problem arising in grid computing is to select the most efficient resource to run a particular program. Also users are required to reserve in advance the resources needed to run their program on the grid. At present the execution time of any program submission depends on guesswork by the user. This leads to inefficient use of resources, incurring extra operation costs such as idling queues or machines. Thus a prediction module was designed and developed to aid the user. This module estimates the execution time of a program by using aspects of static analysis, analytical benchmarking and compiler based approach. It consists of 4 main stages; each with its own functionality. An incoming program is categorized accordingly, parsed and then broken down into smaller units known as tokens. The complexity and relationship amongst these tokens are then analyzed and finally the execution time is estimated for the entire program that was submitted.

A new form of denotational mathematics known as visual semantic algebra (VSA) is presented for abstract visual object and architecture manipulation. The cognitive theories for pattern recognition, such as cognitive principles of visual perception and basic mechanisms of object and pattern recognition, are explored. A number of case studies on VSA in pattern recognition are presented to demonstrate VAS' expressive power for algebraic manipulation of visual objects. The cognitive process of pattern recognition is rigorously modeled using VSA and real-time process algebra (RTPA), which reveals the fundamental mechanisms of natural pattern recognition by the brain. The theories and case studies demonstrate that VSA can be applied not only in machine visual and spatial reasoning, but also in computational intelligence system designs as a powerful man-machine language for representing and manipulating visual geometrical systems. On the basis of VSA, computational intelligence systems such as robots and cognitive computers may process and inference visual and image object rigorously and efficiently.

We present a novel use of GPUs (graphics processing units) for the analysis of histopathological images of neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer. Thanks to the advent of modern microscopy scanners, whole-slide histopathological images can now be acquired but the computational costs to analyze these images using sophisticated image analysis algorithms are usually high. In this study, we have implemented previously developed image analysis algorithms using GPUs to exploit their outstanding processing power and memory bandwidth. The resulting GPU code was contrasted and combined with a C++ implementation on a multicore CPU to maximize parallelism on emerging architectures. Our codes were tested on different classes of images, with performance gain factors about 5.6x when the execution time of a Matlab code running on the CPU is compared with a code running jointly on CPU and GPU.

This paper addresses the problem of verifying stability of the interconnection of integral input-to-state stable (iISS) systems. This paper strengthens a Lyapunov approach to the problem to the point where the necessity of a small-gain condition holds without technical assumptions such as uniformity and analyticity required by previous work. This paper unifies the treatment of iISS and input-to-state stable (ISS) systems, which has not been achieved by any previous technique of constructing Lyapunov functions. It is shown that iISS systems and ISS systems can share a common form of Lyapunov functions to characterize stability of their interconnection with respect to external signals. Global asymptotic stability is also discussed.

In this paper, interconnected retarded nonlinear systems are considered. Both the constant discrete and distributed time-delays in the subsystems and the interconnections are addressed. A sufficient small-gain type condition for integral input-to-state stability with respect to external inputs is provided in the framework of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals.
