Complex systems are not only characterized by their magnitudes, but also their lifespans. This paper presents a theory of Long-Lifespan systems (LLS's) and its applications in explaining the properties of complex systems from both the function and time dimensions. The mathematical models of LLS's such as those of the abstract systems, system magnitudes, and system lifespan, are established. Then, properties of LLS's, particularly those of system conservation, system equilibrium, and system self-organization, are formally analyzed. The fundamental mechanisms and applications of LLS's in economics are elaborated, followed by the description of the global warning and the greenhouse effect in order to explain the rational causality of global climate system as a typical LLS system.

Free-space optical(FSO) communication has received much attention in recent years as a cost-effective,licensefree and wide-bandwidth access technique for high data rates *** performance of FSO communication,however,severely suffers from turbulence-induced fading caused by atmospheric *** laser transmitters and/or receivers can be placed at both ends to mitigate the turbulence fading and exploit the advantages of spatial *** diversity is particularly crucial for strong turbulence channels in which single-input single-output(SISO) link performs extremely ***-induced strong turbulence fading in outdoor FSO systems can be modeled as a multiplicative random process which follows the K *** this paper,we investigate the error rate performance of FSO systems for K-distributed atmospheric turbulence channels and potential advantages of spatial diversity deployments at the transmitter and/or *** results demonstrate significant diversity gains of multiple transmitter/receivers deployment in FSO *** further present efficient approximated closed-form expressions for the average bit-error rate(BER) of multiple-input single-output(MISO) and single-input multiple-output(SIMO) FSO *** analytical tools are reliable alternatives to time-consuming Monte Carlo simulation of FSO systems where BER targets as low as 10 9 are typically aimed to achieve.

Despite the relative maturity of knowledge management, the problem of facilitating knowledge creation and sharing at multiple organizational levels in a uniform way is still crucial. Moreover, managing knowledge at each organizational level implies a number of critical heterogeneities (representational, semantic, etc.) which current solutions do not address adequately. In this paper we present a faceted ontology which addresses the content, context, community, domain and business issues of knowledge management. We describe the ontology, its applicability and its benefits in three Knowledge Management System implementations.

This paper presents stability analysis of the time-delayed equivalent control based single input sliding mode control systems using an LMI approach. Conditions to guarantee the boundedness of the control system trajectories under the time-delayed equivalent control based sliding mode control are obtained. Maximum upper bound of the delay time to guarantee stability is estimated. Digital simulations are conducted to verify the theoretical results.

A micro-power CMOS front-end, consisting of a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and an ultralow cutoff frequency lowpass filter for the acquisition of photoplethysmographic signal (PPG) is presented. Robust dc photocurrent rejection for the pulsed signal source is achieved through a sample-and-hold stage in the feed-forward signal path and an error amplifier in the feedback path. Ultra-low cutoff frequency of the filter is achieved with a proposed technique that incorporates a pair of current-steering transistors that increases the effective filter capacitance. The design was realized in a 0.35-μm CMOS technology. It consumes 600 μW at 2.5 V, rejects dc photocurrent ranged from 100 nA to 53.6 μ A, and achieves lower-band and upper-band - 3-dB cutoff frequencies of 0.46 and 2.8 Hz, respectively. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper studies the time-delay effect on the equivalent control based sliding mode control. Conditions to guarantee the boundedness of the control system steady states under the time delayed equivalent control based sliding mode control are obtained. Maximum upper bound of the delay time to guarantee boundedness is estimated. Simulations are conducted to verify the theoretical results.

In this paper, we present a technique for addressing 3-dimensional face recognition in presence of facial expressions using a bilinear model. The bilinear model allows decoupling the impact of identity and expression on face appearance and encoding their contribution in separate control parameters. This is achieved by first representing faces as parametric surface models described by a fixed length parameter vector. A generic face model is fitted to each face based on a novel technique that relies on geodesic distances to find implicitly corresponding facial landmarks between the model and the face in hand. Model parameters are then used for bilinear decomposition. The experimental results on the publicly available BU-3DFE face database demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique.

This study examines a variety of artificial neural network (ANN) models in terms of their classification efficiency in an orthopedic disease, namely osteoporosis. Osteoporosis risk prediction may be viewed as a pattern classification problem, based on a set of clinical parameters. Multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) and probabilistic neural networks (PNNs) were used in order to face the osteoporosis risk factor prediction. This approach is the first computational intelligence technique based on ANNs for osteoporosis risk study on Greek population. MLPs and PNNs are both feed-forward networks; however, their modus operandi is different. Various MPL architectures were examined after modifying the number of nodes in the hidden layer, the transfer functions and the learning algorithms. Moreover, PNNs were implemented with spread values ranging from 0.1 to 50, and 4 or 2 neurons in output layer, according to coding of osteoporosis desired outcome. The obtained results lead to the conclusion that the PNNs outperform to MLPs, thus they are proved as appropriate computation intelligence technique for osteoporosis risk factor prediction. Furthermore, the overfitting problem was more frequent to MLPs, contrary to PNNs as their spread value increased. The aim of proposed PNN is to assist specialists in osteoporosis prediction, avoiding unnecessary further testing with bone densitometry.

Customer knowledge has been increasingly recognized as a key strategic knowledge resource in organizations. This knowledge can be extracted from the customers' gathered information. For different customers the gathered information has different value and should be considered based on its value. In this paper we represent a method for customer knowledge management by considering the value of information. To do so, we have made a customer value function. The value function has developed by the indices based on customers' utility and expertise. This method applied in a newspaper office by defining 4 indices for customer value and calculation of the weights by AHP. Based on these weights, linear value function is established. The results of analysis of weighted information had more similarity to analysis done by experts than traditional analysis and verified by experts' analysis.
