In this article, we will discuss and evaluate a prototype of a wireless sensor network (WSN) elderly healthcare at primary care center and residential home. The main functions are to provide users (home assistants etc) with a degree of "understanding" of information about him, such that what he is doing, where he is, what his health activity is. One major feature in our experimental e-health prototype is positioning which can be used for determine the localization of the elderly in the apartment. For tracking and localization, we have proposed a positioning algorithm which is based on passive positioning. The obtained experimental results show that this prototype has high accuracy in localization and tracking.

One of the central issues in space mapping optimization is the quality of the underlying coarse models and surrogates. Whether a coarse model is sufficiently similar to the fine model may be critical to the performance of the space mapping optimization algorithm and a poor coarse model may result in lack of convergence. Although similarity requirements can be expressed with proper analytical conditions, it is difficult to verify such conditions beforehand for real-world engineering optimization problems. In this paper, we provide methods of assessing the quality of coarse/surrogate models. These methods can be used to predict whether a given model might be successfully used in space mapping optimization, to compare the quality of different coarse models, or to choose the proper type of space mapping which would be suitable to a given engineering design problem. Our quality estimation methods are derived from convergence results for space mapping algorithms. We provide illustrations and several practical application examples. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2007.

In this paper, we propose two controllers which extend the original PD+I fuzzy logic controller to treat the plant with time varying nonlinear dynamics. The adaptation ability of the first self tuning PD+I fuzzy logic controller (STPD+I-31) is obtained by adjusting the output scaling factor automatically thereby contributing to significant improvement in performance. Second proposed controller (STPD+I-9) is the simplified version of STPD+I-31 which is designed under the imposed constraint that allows only minimum number of rules in the rule bases. The proposed controllers are compared with two classical nonlinear controllers: the pole placement self tuning PID controller and sliding mode controller. All the controllers are applied to the two-links revolute robot for the tracking control. The tracking performance of STPD+I-31 and STPD+I-9 are much better than the pole placement self tuning PID controller during high speed operations while the performance are comparable at low and medium speed. In addition, STPD+I-31 and STPD+I-9 outperform sliding mode controller under same method of comparison study. © 2008 IEEE.

Inspired by Weber's Law, this paper proposes a simple, yet very powerful and robust local descriptor, Weber Local Descriptor (WLD). It is based on the fact that human perception of a pattern depends on not only the change of a stimulus (such as sound, lighting, et al.) but also the original intensity of the stimulus. Specifically, WLD consists of two components: its differential excitation and orientation. A differential excitation is a function of the ratio between two terms: One is the relative intensity differences of its neighbors against a current pixel;the other is the intensity of the current pixel. An orientation is the gradient orientation of the current pixel. For a given image, we use the differential excitation and the orientation components to construct a concatenated WLD histogram feature. Experimental results on Brodatz textures show that WLD impressively outperforms the other classical descriptors (e.g., Gabor). Especially, experimental results on face detection show a promising performance. Although we train only one classifier based on WLD features, the classifier obtains a comparable performance to state-of-the-art methods on MIT+CMU frontal face test set, AR face dataset and CMU profile test set.

Dermoscopy is one of the major imaging modalities used in the diagnosis of melanoma and other pigmented skin lesions. Due to the difficulty and subjectivity of human interpretation, dermoscopy image analysis has become an important research area. Border detection is often the first step in the automated analysis of dermoscopy images. Although numerous methods have been developed for the detection of lesion borders, very few studies were comprehensive in the evaluation of their results. In this paper, we evaluate five recent border detection methods on a set of 90 dermoscopy images using three sets of dermatologist-drawn borders as the ground-truth. In contrast to previous work, we utilize an objective measure, the Normalized Probabilistic Rand Index, which takes into account the variations in the ground-truth images. The results demonstrate that the differences between four of the evaluated border detection methods are in fact smaller than those predicted by commonly used measures.

Power control is an important research topic for ad-hoc Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In today's sophisticated and competitive wireless environment, the control of the energy consumption in a WSN for homecare e-health makes it possible to guarantee basic levels of system performance, such as connectivity, throughput, delay, QoS and survivability in the presence of both mobility-immobility and a large number of sensor nodes. Recent advances in sensor fabrication technology, low-power digital and analogue electronics, and low-power wireless communication systems have made it possible to develop low-cost, robust and survivable WSNs to support activities such as assisted living and ambient intelligence (Aml). A large variety of approaches for intelligent energy-efficient schemes have been simulated over different performance metrics. In this paper, various decision support schemes are proposed evaluating the selection of different network infrastructures in terms of routing optimization and signal strength selection. More than one third of about 38 million adults 65 and older fall each year in the United States. To address the above problem we propose to develop an acoustic fall detection system (FADE) that will automatically signal a fall to the monitoring caregiver. As opposed to many existent fall detection systems that require the monitored person to wear devices such as accelerometers or gyroscopes at all times, our system is completely unobtrusive by not requiring any wearable devices. To reduce the false alarm rate we employ an array of acoustic sensors to obtain sound source height information. The sound is considered a false alarm if it comes from a source located at a height higher than 2 feet. We tested our system in a pilot study that consisted of a set of 23 falls performed by a stunt actor during six sessions of about 15 minutes each (1.3 hours in total). The actor was previously trained by our nursing collaborators to fall like an elderly person. The use of height information reduced the false alarm hourly rate from 32 to 5 at a 100% fall detection rate.

Many important applications in biology have underlying datasets that are relational, that is, only the (dis)similarity between biological objects (amino acid sequences, gene expression profiles, etc.) is known and not their feature values in some feature space. Examples of such relational datasets are the gene similarity matrices obtained from BLAST, gene expression data, or gene ontology (GO) similarity measures. Once a relational dataset is obtained, a common question asked is how many groups of objects are represented in the original dataset. The answer to this question is usually obtained by employing a clustering algorithm and a cluster validity measure. In this article we describe a cluster validity measure for non-Euclidean relational fuzzy c-means that is based on the correlation between a relation induced on the data by the cluster memberships and the original relational data. This validity measure can be applied to partitions made by any fuzzy relational clustering algorithm. We illustrate our measure by validating clusters in several dissimilarity matrices for a set of 194 gene products obtained using BLAST and GO similarities.

This paper presents an artificial homeostatic system (AHS) devoted to the autonomous navigation of mobile robots, with emphasis on neuro-endocrine interactions. The AHS is composed of two modules, each one associated with a particular reactive task and both implemented using an extended version of the GasNet neural model, denoted spatially unconstrained GasNet model or simply non-spatial GasNet (NSGasNet). There is a coordination system, which is responsible for the specific role of each NSGasNet at a given operational condition. The switching among the NSGasNets is implemented as an artificial endocrine system (AES), which is based on a system of coupled nonlinear difference equations. The NSGasNets are synthesized by means of an evolutionary algorithm. The obtained neuro-endocrine controller is adopted in simulated and real benchmark applications, and the additional flexibility provided by the use of NSGasNet, together with the existence of an automatic coordination system, guides to convincing levels of performance.

In recent years, technologies have been introduced offering a large amount of computing and networking resources. New applications such as Google AdSense and BitTorrent can profit from the use of these resources. An efficient way of discovering and reserving these resources is by using the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) concept. SOA can be considered as a philosophy or paradigm in organizing and utilizing services and capabilities that may be under the control of different ownership domains. This paper presents an architecture that can be used to support end-to-end resource virtualization for Web 2.0 applications and in particular for peer-to-peer applications by using the Service Oriented Architecture concept. © 2008 IEEE.
