Breast cancer is a leading cause of deaths in women. Mammography is considered as the most effective technology presently available for breast cancer screening, being very effective in the detection of clustered microcalcifications which are considered as one of the most important findings associated to the existence of breast cancer. A computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system named ldquoHippocrates-mstrdquo has been already developed in the lab based on detailed analysis and evaluation of related features of microcalcifications (individually and in clusters). Preliminary evaluation results have shown that the system achieves high levels of sensitivity, while suffering from low specificity. For this reason, our current studies aim to a methodology refinement which will lead to optimized classification results. In this paper, we focus on obscure diagnostic cases classified by the radiologists as BI-RADS 3. In such cases, although short-term re-examination is normally advised, radiologists and physicians usually have strong doubts about their recommendations. We tested the performance of two classifiers embedded in the proposed CAD system using a dataset of 63 (57 benign and 6 malignant) mammograms, all classified as BI-RADS 3 and biopsy proven. The sensitivity achieved by the first one (the default Hippocrates-mst classifier) is as high as 100%, classifying correctly all the malignant cases. As far as the benign cases are concerned, systempsilas specificity is 35.09%. Using the second classifier (a rule based and SVM hybrid classifier) the specificity increases to 63.16% with a cost of sensitivity decrease to 66.67%.

Modern applications require powerful high-performance platforms to deal with many different algorithms that make use of massive calculations. At the same time, low-cost and high-performance specific hardware (e.g., GPU, PPU) are rising and the CPUs turned to multiple cores, characterizing together an interesting and powerful heterogeneous execution platform. Therefore, self-adaptive computing is a potential paradigm for those scenarios as it can provide flexibility to explore the computational resources on heterogeneous cluster attached to a high-performance computer system platform. As the first step towards a run-time reschedule load-balancing framework targeting that kind of platform, application time requirements and its crosscutting behavior play an important role for task allocation decisions. This paper presents a strategy for self-reallocation of specific tasks, including dynamic created ones, using aspect-oriented paradigms to address non-functional application timing constraints in the design phase. Additionally, as a case study, a special attention on radar image processing will be given in the context of a surveillance system based on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

The identification of reliable peripheral biomarkers for clinical diagnosis, patient prognosis, and biological functional studies would allow for access to biological information currently available only through invasive methods. Traditional approaches have so far considered aspects of tissues and biofluid markers independently. Here we introduce an information theoretic framework for biomarker discovery, integrating biofluid and tissue information. This allows us to identify tissue information in peripheral biofluids. We treat tissue-biofluid interactions as an information channel through functional space using 26 proteomes from 45 different sources to determine quantitatively the correspondence of each biofluid for specific tissues via relative entropy calculation of proteomes mapped onto phenotype, function, and drug space. We propose a novel method for axonal bouton modeling and automated detection in populations of labeled neurons, as well as bouton distribution analysis for the study of neural circuit organization and plasticity. Since axonal boutons are the presynaptic specializations of neural synapses, their locations can be used to determine the organization of neural circuitry, and in time-lapse studies, neural circuit dynamics. We propose simple geometric models for axonal boutons that account for variations in size, position, rotation and curvature of the axon in the vicinity of the bouton. We then use the normalized cross-correlation between the model and image data as a test statistic for bouton detection and position estimation. Thus, the problem is cast as a statistical detection problem where we can tune the algorithm parameters to maximize the probability of detection for a given probability of false alarm. For example, we can detect 81% of boutons with 9% false alarm from noisy, out of focus, images. We also present a novel method to characterize the orientation and elongation of a distribution of labeled boutons and we demonstrate its performance by applying it to a labeled data set.

We present a novel active mask framework for the segmentation of fluorescence microscope images of cells, and in particular, for the segmentation of the Golgi body as well as cell- volume computation. We demonstrate that the algorithm is able to efficiently segment a stack of images and successfully assign multiple pieces of the Golgi body in a 2D image to the cell to which they belong. Further, we demonstrate that our algorithm is more accurate than manual segmentation of these images.

In this paper, we propose two controllers which extend the original PD+I fuzzy logic controller to treat the plant with time varying nonlinear dynamics. The adaptation ability of the first self tuning PD+I fuzzy logic controller (STPD+I_31) is obtained by adjusting the output scaling factor automatically thereby contributing to significant improvement in performance. Second proposed controller (STPD+I_9) is the simplified version of STPD+I_31 which is designed under the imposed constraint that allows only minimum number of rules in the rule bases. The proposed controllers are compared with two classical nonlinear controllers: the pole placement self tuning PID controller and sliding mode controller. All the controllers are applied to the two-links revolute robot for the tracking control. The tracking performance of STPD+I_31 and STPD+I_9 are much better than the pole placement self tuning PID controller during high speed operations while the performance are comparable at low and medium speed. In addition, STPD+I_31 and STPD+I_9 outperform sliding mode controller under same method of comparison study.

The aim of this paper is to present a new design for a controller unit using base 3, which will be named ternary controller unit. The ternary controller unit is planned to be the future brain of the ternary central processing unit. The ternary controller unit controls the fetch and execution cycles of instructions. To achieve this task, the ternary controller unit receives instructions from the instruction register that is ternary, then a ternary decoder decodes those instructions. Finally the ternary controller unit sends the resulting control word (control signals) to other registers and logic circuits of the ternary central processing unit to determines their function at each phase of the fetch-execute cycle.

In this paper, we propose a new framework for assessing the biological significance of the outputs of any biclustering algorithm. The framework relies on the p-value computed by a Fisher's exact test on a 2x2 contingency table derived from gene ontology (GO) enrichment level and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) data enrichment level. We illustrate the framework using our published robust biclustering algorithm (RoBA), the Cheng and Church (CC) algorithm, and a well-defined set of yeast cell cycle gene expression data and chip-chip data. Our evaluation also shows that the biclusters identified by RoBA are biologically more homogeneous than the ones identified by the Cheng and Church (CC) algorithm.

The percentage of the elderly population grew rapidly in recent years, so the tremendous life and health care needs became an issue of focus in an aging society. The elderly nursing home plays an important role and intends to provide a comfortable environment and living space and serve as safe and healthy place for the elderly. However, the frailty and fragility of the elderly in both physiologically and psychologically make it an uneasy task. To enhance the service and care quality of an elderly nursing home, a ubiquitous monitor system integrated with biosensors and wireless network technology was implemented as a prototyping system. For managing sensors easily, the universal plug and play (UPnP) technology from digital living network alliance (DLNA) is adopted. The system was expected to be a digital health network to improve the activity of daily living (ADL) of the residents, to detect the emergencies or accidents such as stroke, falling down, fainting, and heart attack, in order to enhance the quality of care and promote efficiency at the same time.
