In this paper, we propose a new framework for assessing the biological significance of the outputs of any biclustering algorithm. The framework relies on the p-value computed by a Fisher's exact test on a 2x2 contingency table derived from gene ontology (GO) enrichment level and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) data enrichment level. We illustrate the framework using our published robust biclustering algorithm (RoBA), the Cheng and Church (CC) algorithm, and a well-defined set of yeast cell cycle gene expression data and chip-chip data. Our evaluation also shows that the biclusters identified by RoBA are biologically more homogeneous than the ones identified by the Cheng and Church (CC) algorithm.

The percentage of the elderly population grew rapidly in recent years, so the tremendous life and health care needs became an issue of focus in an aging society. The elderly nursing home plays an important role and intends to provide a comfortable environment and living space and serve as safe and healthy place for the elderly. However, the frailty and fragility of the elderly in both physiologically and psychologically make it an uneasy task. To enhance the service and care quality of an elderly nursing home, a ubiquitous monitor system integrated with biosensors and wireless network technology was implemented as a prototyping system. For managing sensors easily, the universal plug and play (UPnP) technology from digital living network alliance (DLNA) is adopted. The system was expected to be a digital health network to improve the activity of daily living (ADL) of the residents, to detect the emergencies or accidents such as stroke, falling down, fainting, and heart attack, in order to enhance the quality of care and promote efficiency at the same time.

Several methods and software tools exist for evaluating new ideas in corporate environments, which provide significant help to decision makers when selecting the most promising suggestions for innovation. In this paper, we identify five criteria for assessing idea evaluation methods (number and type of ideas, number and motivation of evaluators, type of feedback) and we use them to review prominent methods (multi-criteria analysis, statistical analysis, qualitative research, rapid prototyping, feasibility studies and Information Aggregation Markets). We identify Information Aggregation Markets as a prominent new method and we present a novel system that implements the concept of Information Aggregation Markets as well as early results from its evaluation.

In this paper, four individual approaches to region classification for knowledge-assisted semantic image analysis are presented and comparatively evaluated. All of the examined approaches realize knowledge-assisted analysis via implicit knowledge acquisition, i.e. are based on machine learning techniques such as support vector machines (SVMs), self organizing maps (SOMs), genetic algorithm (GA)and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Under all examined approaches, each image is initially segmented and suitable low-level descriptors are extracted for every resulting segment. Then, each of the aforementioned classifiers is applied to associate every region with a predefined high-level semantic concept. An appropriate evaluation framework has been employed for the comparative evaluation of the above algorithms under varying experimental conditions.

This study aims to add tele-ultrasound techniques and emergency physician support to improve the quality of pre-hospital medical emergency services. On the other hand, a diagnostically useful FAST scan is dependent on the skill level of the EMTs using the portable ultrasound unit. However, providing adequate tools is still a prerequisite to the successful execution of a job. In the future, an improved system interface and standardized training protocols in the EMT training program should overcome any deficit in EMT skill level while using the portable ultrasound scanner.

We propose a system for identification of germ layer components in teratomas derived from human and nonhuman primate embryonic stem cells. Tissue regeneration and repair, drug testing and discovery, the cure of genetic and developmental syndromes all may rest on the understanding of the biology and behavior of embryonic stem (ES) cells. Within the field of stem cell biology, an ES cell is not considered an ES cell until it can produce a teratoma tumor (the "gold" standard test); a seemingly disorganized mass of tissue derived from all three embryonic germ layers; ectoderm, mesoderm, and endo- derm. Identification and quantification of tissue types within teratomas derived from ES cells may expand our knowledge of abnormal and normal developmental programming and the response of ES cells to genetic manipulation and/or toxic exposures. In addition, because of the tissue complexity, identifying and quantifying the tissue is tedious and time consuming, but in turn the teratoma provides an excellent biological platform to test robust image analysis algorithms. We use a multiresolution (MR) classification system with texture features, as well as develop novel nuclear texture features to recognize germ layer components. With redundant MR transform, we achieve a classification accuracy of approximately 88 %.

The breadth of biological data collected in the last decade has far outstripped the methods available to process it. To effectively investigate and explore this abundance of data, novel automated collection and analysis approaches must be devised. We have developed a new open software framework, the Open Genomic Analysis Platform (OGAP), to aid in the analysis of genomic data. It is capable of analyzing a variety of data source, and focuses on using information theory to characterize data. The frameworks has is capable of import a variety of genome tied data, and provides custom analysis and visualization of results. We then demonstrate the use of this framework analyzing the Prochlorococcus Marinus organism. We show a strong correlation between the information content of sequence data and up regulation of gene expression during lytic infection.

We present a semi-supervised protocol for segmentation of tumors and normal anatomy for applications in Radiation Oncology. A primary goal in radiation therapy in oncology is to deliver high radiation dose to the perceived tumor while sparing the surrounding non-diseased organs. Consequently, a critical task in the workflow of radiation oncologists is the manual delineation of normal and diseased structures on 3D-CT scans. In this paper, we compare the results using a non-parametric snake technique with a gold standard consisting of manually delineated structures. Structures include tumors as well as normal organs including lungs, liver and kidneys. This technique provides fast segmentation that is robust with respect to noisy edges. In addition, this algorithm does not require the user to optimize a variety of parameters unlike many segmentation algorithms. We provide results that show the improvement in overlap between the manually delineated gold standard and the output of the segmentation algorithms using the user input.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can be used to monitor the interested region using multi-hop communication. Coverage is a primary metric to evaluate the capacity of monitoring. Connectivity also needs to be guaranteed so that the sink node can receive all sensed data from the region for future processing. In this paper, a connected full/partial coverage problem under border effects is studied. We consider the scenario where the sensor nodes are distributed in a circle-shaped region randomly. First, the network coverage provided by N nodes is derived by the mathematical expression exactly. Then the lower bound of the network connectivity probability is also derived. Since nodes are equipped with energy-limited batteries, energy conservation in such networks is of paramount importance to prolong the network lifetime. Accordingly, we propose a location-independent, energy-efficient data routing algorithm EECCP which considers the network coverage and sensor connectivity simultaneously. Compared with other related algorithms, the extensive simulation results demonstrate that our algorithm can achieve the connected, full/partial coverage requirement.
