The advancement of traffic makes world more and more internationalized and increases frequency of communication between people who come from different cultures. Differences in their conversation go beyond the languages they speak to the non-verbal behaviors they express while talking. To improve the abilities of the embodied conversational agents (ECAs) while interacting with human users we are working on the ECA based application, a tour guide of city Dubrovnik that servers visitors in Japanese, Croatian and general western cultures speaking in English. This paper presents the overall architecture and explains possible extension with another culture. It describes issues we met while making agent talk in Croatian and proposed solutions.

The Oregon Health & Science University submission to the TREC 2007 Genomics Track approached the entity list question answering task using a modular object oriented system framework. A system object coordinates a collection of processing objects into a pipe that constructs a set of queries, retrieves passage, and then processes those passages into a final output answer set. Using the framework we applied multiple levels of synonym expansion and a ranked series of topic queries with a range of specificities in order to retrieve all of the likely relevant passages with the most likely ranked higher. We then applied sentence pruning to the head and tail of each passage using both NLP and term-based techniques. Overall scores finished around the TREC Genomics mean for each of the four measures. Careful passage retrieval, including synonym expansion and multiple query construction, as well as sentence pruning was essential in achieving acceptable performance on this task.

We present two full-custom implementations of the Register Alias Table (RAT) for a 4-way superscalar dynamically-scheduled processor in a commercial 130nm CMOS technology. The implementations differ in the way they organize the embedded global checkpoints (GCs) which support speculative execution. In the first implementation, representative of early designs, the GCs are organized as shift registers. In the second implementation, representative of more recent proposals, the GCs are organized as random access buffers. We measure the impact of increasing the number of GCs on the latency, energy, and area of the RAT. The results support the importance of recent techniques that reduce the number of GCs while maintaining performance.

A Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) is a modelling methodology based on exploiting knowledge and experience. It comprises the main advantages of fuzzy logic and neural networks, representing a graphical model that consists of nodes-concepts (describing elements of the system) which are connected with weighted edges (representing the cause and effect relationships among the concepts). FCMs have proved to be a promising modeling methodology with many successful applications in different areas especially for simulating system design, modeling and control. In this work, FCMs are introduced to model a decision support system for precision agriculture (PA). The FCM model developed consists of nodes which describe soil properties and cotton yield and of the weighted relationships between these nodes. The nodes of the FCM model represent the main factors influencing cotton crop production i.e. essential soil properties such as texture, pH, OM, K, and P. The proposed FCM model addresses the problem of crop development and spatial variability of cotton yield, taking into consideration the spatial distribution of all the important factors affecting yield. The first results of the study are very promising;our model achieves a 70% average success rate on yield class prediction between two possible categories (low and high) for three different years. This model will be further investigated to achieve better results by introducing learning algorithms into FCMs.

Hospitals produce millions of patient records consisting of clinical annotations containing extensive usage of abbreviations. The data in these clinical annotations are an excellent source for bioinformatics research but the use of abbreviations can create ambiguity. The main objective of our research is to develop a software application that takes a medical acronym as input and accesses medical and pharmaceutical websites to retrieve information from articles containing the acronym along with a user selected full-form of the acronym. The retrieved information consists of article title, authors, publication date, article abstract, and Medical Subject Header (MeSH) details. The information is used by researchers in the Biomedical informatics Division of the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center as part of a research effort for reducing the ambiguity created by the use of acronyms. Our contribution to this research effort is a framework for disambiguation that accesses online sources;we design and populate an internal database that can be used in future research efforts.
In this paper, a learning approach to semantic image analysis and classification is proposed that combines global and local information, with explicitly defined knowledge in the form of an ontology. The ontology speci...

We present a new machine learning approach for 3D-QSAR, the task of predicting binding affinities of molecules to target proteins based on 3D structure. Our approach predicts binding affinity by using regression on substructures discovered by relational learning. We make two contributions to the state-of-the-art. First, we use multiple-instance (MI) regression, which represents a molecule as a set of 3D conformations, to model activity. Second, the relational learning component employs the "Score As You Use" (SAYU) method to select substructures for their ability to improve the regression model. This is the first application of SAYU to multiple-instance, real-valued prediction. We evaluate our approach on three tasks and demonstrate that (i) SAYU outperforms standard coverage measures when selecting features for regression, (ii) the MI representation improves accuracy over standard single feature-vector encodings and (iii) combining SAYU with MI regression is more accurate for 3D-QSAR than either approach by itself.
