Peripheral neuroblastic tumors (pNTs) make the most commonly encountered tumor groups in children. Neuroblastoma, one of the categories in pNTs, is known to have unique biological behaviors with variable clinical prognoses of the patients. Part of the neuroblastoma prognosis is closely related with grade of neuroblastic differentiation. In this work, we present an automatic classification system that includes a novel segmentation method using the EM algorithm with the Fisher-Rao criterion as its kernel. This is followed by a classification stage with classifiers applied to the actual neuroblastoma images. The good classification accuracy suggests that the developed method is promising in automating this pathological assessment

In this paper we propose an UWB-based location-aided MAC protocol for wireless sensor networks, named LA-MAC. Current MAC proposal is closely coupled to the IEEE 802.15.4a physical layer and it is based on the Impulse-Radio (IR) paradigm. LA-MAC exploits the precise position location provided by the UWB transmission technique in order to assess the channel conditions more accurately and enhance the network performance by wisely allowing simultaneous data transmissions to occur. The produced interference estimation model in conjunction with the distributed admission control scheme, leads to better interference predictions and blocking assessments and thus improves channel spatial reuse efficiency and data throughput. The proposed MAC is evaluated and compared to traditional MAC protocols, like the 802.15.4 that does not take advantage of the UWB peculiar characteristics, showing a significant improvement in terms of network throughput, energy consumption and average MAC delay.

In this paper, the development of a computer-aided system for the classification of grade of neuroblastic differentiation is presented. This automated process is carried out within a multi-resolution framework that follows a coarse-to-fine strategy. Additionally, a novel segmentation approach using the Fisher-Rao criterion, embedded in the generic expectation-maximization algorithm, is employed. Multiple decisions from a classifier group are aggregated using a two-step classifier combiner that consists of a majority voting process and a weighted sum rule using priori classifier accuracies. The developed system, when tested on 14,616 image tiles, had the best overall accuracy of 96.89%. Furthermore, multi-resolution scheme combined with automated feature selection process resulted in 34% savings in computational costs on average when compared to a previously developed single-resolution system. Therefore, the performance of this system shows good promise for the computer-aided pathological assessment of the neuroblastic differentiation in clinical practice.

Fuzzy communication contains vague or imprecise components and it might lack of abundant information. If two entities (man or machine) are communicating by a fuzzy channel, it is necessary that both ends possess the same codebook. The codebook might partly consist of common knowledge but it usually requires a context dependent part that is either learned by the communicating entity or defined by expert knowledge. Possibly it is continuously adapting to the input information. If such a codebook is not available or it contains too imprecise information, the information to be transmitted might be too much distorted and might lead to misunderstanding, misinterpretation and serious damage. If however the quality of the available codebook is satisfactory, the communication will be efficient i. e., the original contents of the message can be reconstructed. At the same time it is cost effective, as fuzzy communication is compressed as compared to traditional "abundant communication".

The aim of this paper is to present an experimental off-line technique that can be used to estimate the condition of aluminum electrolytic capacitors. The aging of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is expressed by the increase of their equivalent series resistance (ESR) and the reduction of their capacitance. Thus, the proposed technique is based in the estimation of both ESR and capacitance values. To validate the theoretical equations some experimental and simulated results will be presented.

Recent research trends focus on how multiscale biomedical information can be modeled and transformed into knowledge, in order to lead to a less interfering but also more individualized diagnosis and therapy. In order to assess the clinical importance of models of human pathology (e.g. cancer), it is necessary to validate them with prior and post treatment clinical data which in turn requires the determination of the tumor size and shape with high resolution, accuracy and precision, as well as structural and physiological information. This paper discusses some of the most important image analysis challenges in order to define an optimal method for extracting more accurate and precise anatomical and functional information related to the underlying pathology, which can be used for initializing and validating models of pathophysiology as well as simulations/predictions of the response to therapeutical regimes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

With the human genome sequenced, attention has been shifting to proteins and their function. Several technologies including mass spectrometry and gel electrophoresis have traditionally been used to study proteins. These technologies rely on proteins' masses to characterize and/or identify them. Once identified, the discovered proteins' are often analyzed for their functional relevance. In this paper, we present an alternative approach to studying protein function directly, based on protein mass. By analyzing proteins with similar mass ranges (bins), we discovered that certain biological functions are associated with specific mass bins more frequently than would be expected by chance. Biological functional classes found in this manner could be seen across the three examined organisms: human, worm and fly. We found no sequence-based homology across significant mass-function proteins in the three different organisms. This investigation leads to useful property that the mass-based biological functional classes are preserved across the organisms. Thus, this paper describes a potential constraint for evolution of similar function based on mass constraints. Finally, this work yields a roadmap for experimental design for functional exploration of proteomes in mass-based technologies such as gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry.

In this paper, a novel online technique used for estimating the parameters of passive components in non-isolated DC/DC converters is presented. The technique is implemented for the Boost and Buck-Boost converters, operating both in Continuous Current Mode (CCM) and Discontinuous Current Mode (DCM). The technique is based on the sampling of the MOSFET gate signal, inductor current and load voltage, which is followed by the processing of the acquired data through different ways such as the least mean squares algorithm. The knowledge of these passive components parameters may be used in the fault diagnosis of such converters. Results obtained from simulations are presented, followed by experimental results in which the inductance, capacitance, load resistor and ESR of the capacitor are estimated, in order to validate the proposed technique.
